Mision Peniel

“No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted.” —Aesop
In the midst of an overcast rainy afternoon, the spirit of Peniel was shining bright! With the help of our small group of volunteers from Covenant Presbyterian Church we prepared grocery sacks with an assortment of fresh fruit and vegetables and other nutritious food, including special treats for the kids! We thank God for the abundance of food blessings from SW food banks (Harry Chapin and Midwest), our garden partnership with Cultivate Abundance (working with ECHO and area gardeners) and donations from churches and friends. These partnerships make it possible to provide quality food to our farmworker community friends and families every week!

We ask for continued prayers for the community as Immokalee is quickly becoming the epicenter of rising COVID-19 cases, now that testing has returned to the community and is much more accessible to farmworkers. For so many, their working and living conditions make it difficult to practice social distancing. At the mission, we work hard to follow CDC guidelines. Volunteers are required to wear masks, gloves and observe safe distancing. We continue to require masks to be worn by all who enter the courtyard space as they come for groceries. We will continue in this manner as long as necessary. We are hoping to resume scheduling church groups for mid July and beyond, but will monitor things each week. Thank you for your faithful support through donations and prayers. We do have a designated fund for assisting those affected by COVID-19. We welcome your calls and emails for more information! We are in this together!

Unity in diversity — Pentecost at home This Sunday is Pentecost, the day we often refer to as “the church’s birthday” when teaching children about the liturgical calendar. While I am always in favor of opportunities to eat cake, I think there is an even more important and timely message in the Pentecost story. God’s people are un...

Englewood Meals on Wheels

A big shout out to Olde Village Publix. We have been delivering meals to coolers or in bags for several weeks now as part of our COVID protocol. Today, when I arrived at EMOW, I realized that we had run out of bags. (that was my job and I forgot) I called Publix in a panic and they told me to come right over. They supplied us with enough bags for several weeks. Once again, Englewood is the best community! We would not be able to do what we do without all the support this community provides. #publixismystore #youtoowalgreens #dontforgetdollargeneralaswell

"The ends you serve that are selfish will take you no further than yourself, but the ends you serve that are for all, in common, will take you into eternity." --Marcus Garvey

We give thanks for these opportunities that allow the face of God to be shared with the farmworker community in Immokalee in these challenging times. We give thanks for Friday’s dedicated volunteers, for those who help sustain the mission’s ministries through financial and commodity support, for food bank and garden organizations’ support, for those who pray for the mission and for those who are served... We trust God for all that lies ahead and give thanks for all the “Peniel” moments available to us each and every day!

Thanks so much to all our volunteers. We appreciate you more than you can know.

As COVID-19 cases increase nearly tenfold in two weeks in Immokalee, Doctors Without Borders turns to the press for tests, resources… – Coalition of Immokalee Workers Doctors Without Borders to NPR: We need “more access to tests that we can use so the persons who are positive, their contacts could get tested, so we can quell this outbreak.” After weeks of anxiety, it appears that the novel coronavirus has established a foothold in Immokalee.

Helpful information!

Cloth face coverings prevent the person wearing the mask from spreading respiratory droplets when talking, sneezing, or coughing. If everyone wears a cloth face covering when out in public, such as going to the grocery store, the risk of exposure can be reduced for the community. Since people can spread the virus before symptoms start, or even if people never have symptoms, wearing a cloth face covering can protect others around you. Face coverings worn by others protect you from getting the virus from people carrying the virus.

For more information on cloth face coverings visit

Charlotte County Emergency Management

As we enter into full Phase 1 of the Safe. Smart. Step-by-Step. Plan for Florida’s Recovery today please remember to practice social distancing by putting space between yourself and others and limiting contact with others outside your household, even if you/they have no symptoms. Continue to practice healthy habits, like washing your hands for at least 20 seconds and staying home if you’re sick, to help slow the spread of COVID-19.
