[06/26/19]   The main thought behind discipleship is not one of inspiration but instruction. We must put into practice what has been revealed for us to do through God’s Word. We need the stable foundation of obedience to the Word of God as the basis of our discipleship, otherwise we will be at the mercy of every subjective notion or feeling that comes along.

John Wesley famously said, “Give me one hundred preachers who fear nothing but sin, and desire nothing but God, and I care not a straw whether they be clergymen or laymen; such alone will shake the gates of hell and set up the kingdom of heaven on Earth.” Born in England on June 28, 1703, John would go on to reform the Anglican church from within, fathering a movement called Methodism.

Answers From the Book

QUESTION: Is it right that some people don’t go to other churches except the one they belong to? I believe I can go to any church. We serve the same God.

ANSWER: I think it would be good to first establish the fact that there is only one church. Speaking of the Lord Jesus, we read in Ephesians 1:22-23 that God, “…hath put all things under his feet, and gave him to be the head over all things to the church, Which is his body, the fulness of him that filleth all in all.” We also read in Ephesians 4:4, “There is one body.” The true church is composed of only true believers on the Lord Jesus Christ. While it is possible, and sadly happens all the time, it is possible for unsaved people to join a local ‘church.’ However, the only way to become part of the one true church, is through faith in the Lord Jesus. We read in Acts 2:47, “And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved.” See? You can’t join. The Lord adds you when you are saved.

Sadly enough, today there are many different church groups that represent various teachings. There are many denominations that normally stand for a set of doctrines. Most of these have doctrinal differences that keep them apart from each other. These divisions in the church are an indication of how the Lord has not been given His place as “the head over all things to the church.” We must all shamefully admit that the ONE church, which had ONE head (Christ) does not bear the characteristics of what the Lord would have it look like. Paul wrote in 1 Corinthians 3:3, “For ye are yet carnal: for whereas there is among you envying, and strife, and divisions, are ye not carnal, and walk as men?”

Because of all these differences, denominations, and divisions, most believers will find a church group that most closely believes and teaches as they do. I admit that I would not be comfortable in a setting where I knew they were going to teach things that I consider to be contrary to the Word of God. In reality, it is not spiritually healthy to go from group to group, hearing all kinds of teachings and never really being sure what the truth is. So what are we to do to make sure we are where the Lord wants us to be, following His truths, and manifesting the truth of the ‘one body’ of Christ? Going to the ‘church of your choice’ is not a scriptural principal.

It would be good for us to go back to the example of the early church and follow their practice. We read in Acts 2:42, “And they continued stedfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers.” Four things are mentioned here that should command our attention:
1. They continued steadfastly, or persevered, in the apostles’ doctrine. – We are responsible before the Lord to learn what the apostles taught us in the Bible and follow those truths. Man’s thoughts and traditions have no authority. We need to learn what God’s Word says, and then obey it.
2. They continued in fellowship. – These believers realized the importance of clinging to one another, to seek to encourage each other and to share the things of the Lord with one another. This is not one person’s duty. It is the duty of ALL believers. To come together for a ‘church dinner’, when all we do is talk about our families, our jobs, or our favorite sports do nothing to strengthen each other. While we may enjoy each other’s company, it is the ministry of the scriptures that will strengthen and guide us. Friendship is one thing, while fellowship is something altogether different.
3. They continued in breaking of bread. – This is in reference to the Lord’s request that we remember Him and the death He died for us. I encourage you to read 1 Corinthians 11:23-31 to learn more.
4. They continued in prayers. – These saints came together often to pray together, lifting up their voices and hearts to their Lord in praise and in dependence.

This is how the Lord wants His church to gather and to continue steadfastly in the truths He has given us in His Word. May the Lord touch our hearts with that sense of responsibility to gather together according to His Word so that we might please and honor Him.

Answers From the Book

QUESTION: If, after eating from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, Adam and Eve had also eaten of the tree of life, would mankind have lived eternally in a sinful state? Would God’s word saying “you’ll die the day you eat of this fruit” have failed? What type of redemption would man have needed if that happened?

ANSWER: Before we answer each question, let’s read Genesis 3:22-24: “And the LORD God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live forever: Therefore the LORD God sent him forth from the garden of Eden, to till the ground from whence he was taken. So He drove out the man; and He placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubims, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life.” These verses are simple and clearly teach us that if Adam and Eve had eaten of the tree of life, they would “live forever.” The fruit from the tree of life would have given their bodies immortality, which means, as your question indicated; they would have lived forever in a fallen, sinful condition. God would not allow this, for He had indeed told them, in Genesis 2:17, “But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.” This “death sentence” included “spiritual death” and “physical death,” and had they eaten of the tree of life His word would have failed, for their physical bodies would have never died. To prevent this from happening God drove Adam and Eve out of the garden and posted angels as sentinels to guard the tree of life.

We believe the answer to your third question is that THERE WOULD BE NO REDEMPTION FOR MAN IF ADAM AND EVE HAD EATEN OF THE TREE OF LIFE. The word “redemption” means “deliverance.” God’s redemption involves “God delivering man from the penalty of sin through Christ’s redemptive work on the cross. What is the “penalty of sin?” Sin actually has TWO PENALTIES. Romans 6:23 gives us the first penalty, “For the wages of sin is death.” Hebrews 9:27 adds the second penalty, “And it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment.” If Adam and Eve had eaten of the tree of life they would not have been subject to physical death and Christ’s death would be meaningless. Again, they would have “lived forever,” but because of sin, their lives would have been filled with sorrow and misery on a cursed earth, and like the fallen angels they would have had no salvation offered to them.

God would NOT allow this to happen. He was true to His Word and Adam did die physically AND death has passed upon all men, as we see in Romans 5:12, “Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned.” But God, in love, has provided redemption for lost and guilty man, as we see in Galatians 4:4-5, “But when the fullness of time was come, God sent forth His Son, made of a woman, made under the law, to redeem them that were under the law.” Earlier, in Galatians 3:13, Paul reminded believers of exactly what Christ did to redeem them, “Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree.” When Christ took the sinner’s place on the accursed tree, He paid the penalty for sin. We saw that DEATH and JUDGMENT was the two-fold penalty for sin and on Calvary’s cross the Lord Jesus bore God’s judgment due to sin and then He died and shed His precious blood. In John 19:30 He cried out in victory, “It is finished.” He paid the debt of sin that we could never pay and REDEMPTION is now available to all who feel their need of a Savior. If you will trust the Lord Jesus Christ as your Redeemer, you will be able to rejoice in the truth of Ephesians 1:7, “In Whom we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins.” This includes the future redemption of the body, for Romans 8:23 tells us that believers are “waiting eagerly for…the redemption of the body” (NASB). Praise God for the full redemption He offers us in Christ!

Answers From the Book

QUESTION: Please explain what Jesus meant when He told His mother that His time was not yet come.

ANSWER: No doubt, you are referring to the wedding feast at Cana where the Lord Jesus and His disciples were invited to attend the wedding. Let’s read John 2:1-4, “And the third day there was a marriage in Cana of Galilee; and the mother of Jesus was there: And both Jesus was called, and his disciples, to the marriage. And when they wanted wine, the mother of Jesus saith unto him, They have no wine. Jesus saith unto her, Woman, what have I to do with thee? mine hour is not yet come.” A wedding feast would typically last for days, so we find that sometime during the feast that the wine had run out. Oddly enough, Mary, the mother of Jesus, took it upon herself to inform her son of this. Perhaps she felt bad for the host of the feast. There may have been a lack of money which prohibited them from buying enough wine for all their guests. Obviously she expected the Lord to do something about this.

I want to read the Lord’s response to His mother in verse 4 from the Amplified Bible. That says, “Jesus said to her, “[Dear] woman, what is that to you and to Me? My time [to act and to be revealed] has not yet come.”” The Lord was not being disrespectful of His mother. Calling her ‘woman’ was not harsh. In fact, he used the same word when addressing her tenderly while hanging on the cross as we read in John 19:26, “When Jesus therefore saw his mother, and the disciple standing by, whom he loved, he saith unto his mother, Woman, behold thy son!” This does seem to be a mild reproof of His mother for trying to direct Him in His working of miracles.

Now let’s read verse 5, “His mother saith unto the servants, Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it.” What a great practical lesson for us is found in this verse. Mary steps out of the picture, instructing the servants to listen to and obey the Lord. Many people pray to Mary as a way to God. Yet we see here the example that Mary tells the servants to be in direct contact with Jesus, as she fades from the situation. Mary is not a mediator to God. There is only one mediator as we read in 1 Timothy 2:5, “For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus.”

Back to our portion in John 2, we see in verses 6-10 that the Lord Jesus did turn the water into wine after all. He commanded that six water pots, which contained 20 or 30 gallons each, be filled completely with water. He then instructs the servants in verse 8, “Draw out now, and bear unto the governor of the feast.” When the ruler of the feast “had tasted the water that was made wine,” he declared that it was the best wine that had been served! The Lord had determined that it would be beneficial to perform this miracle here at the wedding feast. But, He could not do this because of His mother’s request; it must be done to the glory of His father and to the benefit of His disciples. John 2:11 tells us, “This beginning of miracles did Jesus in Cana of Galilee, and manifested forth his glory; and his disciples believed on him.” This miracle showed the Lord’s glory and it confirmed the faith of His disciples.

Often, wine is used as a type of joy. We read in Ecclesiastes 10:19, “A feast is made for laughter, and wine maketh merry…” The Lord delights to bring us joy when there is no hope of joy. When all hope is gone and there is nothing but despair, Christ is the only way. It is the Lord that can bring happiness through the forgiveness of sin. No one else can. Nothing else can. Speaking of redemption, we have these precious words from Jeremiah 31:13, “I will turn their mourning into joy, and will comfort them, and make them rejoice from their sorrow.” Won’t you put your faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and allow Him to give you eternal life and joy unspeakable?
