Congregation of the Humility of Mary

Inspired by God. Serving You. www.chmiowa.org

Our commitment to helping people and striving for social justice is never just about words - it's about taking action. The things we do have a strong, positive impact on people's lives, and help make the world a better place for individuals and communities. We're down to earth, and when we see something that needs done, we do it. We dedicate ourselves to caring for Earth and view nature as a gift from God. We want to sustain and improve our environment to make the world a better place for generations to come. Our motivation to serve others and fulfill our calling comes from our hearts and commitment to spirituality. We reach out to comfort and inspire people with real emotion and have a genuine interest in improving their lives. Our relationships are real and long-lasting. Everything we do is inspired by God and stems from our faith. We share this inspiration with others, and help inspire them to live more spiritual and fulfilling lives through God. We seek the opportunity to become the best self that god has called us to become each and every day.

Mission: Caring for the poor, the powerless and Earth itself.

Sisters of St. Francis of Dubuque, Iowa

Happy Valentine's Day! ❤️

[02/12/20]   Lord, make me an instrument of your peace.
Where uncivil words prevail, show me how to model love.
Help me remember the God given dignity of all and invite others to do the same.
Show me how to build bridges and not walls
and see first what unites us rather than how we diverge.
Let me seek to understand before asking to be understood.
Give me a listening heart filled with empathy and compassion.
May I be clear in sharing my own position
and respectful and civil in describing those of others.
Let me never tolerate hateful ideas.
May I invite all to charity and love.
Lord, help me to imitate your compassion and mercy.
Make me an instrument of your peace.
Amen.

Prayer For Those Who Migrate

Mary knew the weariness
Of the journey;
To Bethlehem, To Egypt,
Back to Nazareth.
She knew the weariness,
The fear, the longing for home,
The need to continue moving, moving,
The longing for journey's end,
the longing for at least
a semblance of a home.
To Mary we entrust
The mothers, the fathers, the children
who today are holy families
Migrating in hope, in fear, in longing,
for peace, for some security,
For something like a home.
May they find their journey's end
as we open ourselves to their stories,
their need, their spirits;
We ask for mercy
for all migrants
and for our communities
who are challenged to welcome them,
to give them hope for a new life.

Providing Gifts to Immigrant Children

In celebration of national Vocation Awareness Week here is Sister Bea Snyder who answered the call to religious life in a spirit of simplicity, humility and joy.

After the ICE raids in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, Sr. Bea discovered that young children who are not U.S. Citizens are being ignored by agencies that provide gifts for underprivledged youth.

CHM Sisters, including Sr. Catherine Linnenkamp pictured here, devote the month of November to remember and pray for those who have gone on to their eternal rest. We will add your loved ones’ names to our “Book of Eternal Life,” which has been placed in the Magnificat Chapel. To add a name to the prayer list, leave a comment below or call the Development Office at 563-336-8401. Remembering family and friends in prayer keeps them alive in our hearts and helps them in their journey to God. Even though this is a special month of prayer, Sisters of the Humility of Mary are honored to pray for your departed loved ones at any time.

General information

Since 1854 the congregation of the Humility of Mary (CHM) has moved from one continent to another, lived in diverse cultures and worked with people of all age groups. From the beginning, the community has been characterized by the capacity to change with the times and to adapt to new circumstances and challenges, while holding to a core of faith. Today CHM Sisters, associates and volunteers remain joyfully committed to their original mission: going wherever the Spirit leads, doing what the needs of the times require. They continue to respond to these needs, through ministry to the homebound, homeless, physically and mentally ill, to immigrants, low-income persons, single parents and senior citizens. Other works include parish, prayer and rural ministries, teaching, tutoring, legal services, environmentalism and media literacy. CHMs and their associates are active in 22 states and three countries.
