Over the past year, informed Catholics and Christians in the West have watched helplessly as the Communist government in China has cracked down harder and harder on our Chinese brothers and sisters in Christ. Of course, the Church has been persecuted in China for decades. But, these latest attempts to squelch the independence of the Church are coming in spite of the recent agreement the Vatican signed with China’s communist government. Or, could it be, as some suggest, that the latest persecution against Chinese Christians is coming at least, in part, because of the recent agreement the Vatican signed with the communist government? Now, a letter from Cardinal Zen to the rest of the Cardinals in the world, clearly delineates his grievances with the new Sino-Vatican Agreement. It also brings new light to the questions ('Dubia') he posed to Pope Francis about the Agreement in July (but, which have, to-date, gone unanswered). One of the most striking insights the Cardinal makes about the new Sino-Vatican Agreement can be found in the second paragraph of his letter: "From my analysis of the document of the Holy See (June 28, 2019), “Pastoral guidelines of the Holy See concerning the civil registration of clergy in China,” it is quite clear that it encourages the faithful in China to enter a schismatic church (independent of the pope and under the orders of the Communist Party)." This is a devastating insight, and the good Cardinal, and faithful Catholics and Christians in China, now needs our support, both moral and prayerful. This petition, therefore, both supports Cardinal Zen and his quest to stop the "murder of the Church in China," as well as Chinese Catholics and Christians as they face an intensifying crackdown. To sign the petition go to the Life Site web page.

Roman Catholic Church in Oak Cliff Iglesia Católica Romana en Oak Cliff

Our History On March 25, 1901, Bishop Edward Joseph Dunne erected Blessed Sacrament parish in the Oak Cliff neighborhood of Dallas and appointed Father J. L. Campbell as pastor. The church was built on 12th Street and Grand Street, later converted to Marsalis Avenue. Throughout the years, new buildings were constructed and others wre demolished, and our current church building and rectory were dedicated in 1954. Blessed Sacrament's school, Our Lady of Good Counsel Academy, opened in late 1901 and was led by the Sisters of St. Mary of Namur. In the early 1960s, Blessed Sacrament's school was renamed Bishop Dunne Catholic School and relocated to Rugged Drive. More than 100 years lates, the school remains a strong, Catholic institution of learning in the diocese. Today, Blessed Sacrament continues to be an important cornestone of Catholic worship and education in the diocese and Oak Cliff. More than 3,500 parishioners gather to celebrate God's presence in the Eucharist, in prayer, and in social activities. We have 1,222 children in our catechism classes and many volunteers. The enthusiasm of our parish is exemplified through our many pastoral groups, including prayer group, Legion of Mary, Divine Providence, Divine Mercy, pro-life group, Arco Iris, and youth group. The significant work of each of these ministries tremendously increases the whole community's faith. "They will know we are Christians by our love for God and others," said Father Figueroa, our present pastor. Although we consider ourselves a humble parish, the sights and sounds of our Mass celebrations continue to prove that we are spiritually rich. As the choir sings the entrance hymn and our people unite in song, our hearts rise to God and we are filled with the overwhelming warmth of our parish family. The parish that many consider a "poor, Hispanic parish" becomes a mansion where parishioners celebrate marriages, baptisms, and confirmations. God's love has created a bond that holds our parish and our Oak Cliff community together as one. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Nuestra Historia El 25 de marzo, 1901, el Obispo Edward Joseph Dunne construyo la parroquia del Santísimo Sacramento en el sector de Oak Cliff y nombro al Padre J. [03/13/20]   Diocese of Dallas churches, schools to close for 2 weeks

By David Sedeño
The Texas Catholic

Mass and activities at 79 Catholic churches will be canceled and and 33 Diocese of Dallas Catholic schools will close for two weeks in an effort to help prevent the spread of COVID-19, Bishop Edward J. Burns announced at a news conference on March 13.

That means that through March 30 all weekday and Sunday Masses and confessions will be canceled, as well as activities at the parishes. Classes at the schools that operate under the auspices of the Diocese of Dallas will close through March 27.

Most of the Diocese of Dallas schools and those several private Catholic schools already have Spring Break scheduled for March 16-20. That would mean an additional week off, with some of those campuses converting the second week of closure to their online academic protocols.

Bishop Burns said that the decision to cancel Masses and confessions, close the parishes and the schools through the end of the month came after a meeting on March 13 with the Presbyteral Council, a group of pastors from throughout the diocese, which extends throughout nine counties.

"To eliminate the spread, we need to eliminate the large gatherings," he said.

Churches will be open for individual prayer and Eucharistic adoration.

The diocese joins several other dioceses across the country in curtailing its Masses, public gatherings and celebrations, and school academic and extra-curricular activities in effort to curtail the spread of the virus.

The bishop also said that the faithful are encouraged to view a Mass on television or livestream.

The closure of the parishes means that the usual Sunday offerings, used to pay staff and other expenses could be impacted and the bishop asked that the faithful remain committed to supporting parishes via online giving or other ways.

Additionally, during Lent, many parishes sponsor meals on Fridays, such as Lenten fish fry dinners and those also will be impacted.

A day earlier, on March 12, Bishop Burns had issued a decree that gave dispensation for Sunday Mass to those over 60; those with chronic medical conditions, such as heart disease, diabetes, lung disease and cancer; those with compromised immune system; and to those considered at-risk.

The bishop offered prayerful suggestions for those who cannot attend Mass such as devoting oneself to prayer and reflection, Lenten meditations, reading scripture, praying the rosary or novenas and other Catholic devotions. Mass will also be livestreamed from the cathedral every Sunday in both English and Spanish.

The announcement comes on the heels of parish and diocesan school and several private Catholic schools in Dallas closing their campuses earlier in the week.

Officials at St. Rita Catholic Church and School community and Ursuline Academy of Dallas announced early on March 11 that their campuses would be closed after a person showing symptoms of COVID-19 had come into contact with individuals at those school and church communities.

Later that day, officials at Jesuit College Preparatory School of Dallas and Cistercian Preparatory School in Irving also announced that they would be closed for the remainder of the week.

Jesuit, Cistercian, Ursuline, The Highlands School, Cristo Rey Preparatory School and Mount St. Michael's Catholic School, private schools in Dallas, also will be observing Spring Break from March 16-20.

The decision of whether their campuses would remain closed an additional week and perhaps switch to online protocols would be determined by each of their administrations.

Precauciones contra el Coronavirus y la Influenza
--

In light of the continued rise in the number of flu cases and concerns about the coronavirus (COVID-19), the Diocese of Dallas is taking the following precautions.

Please stay home if you are sick or are experiencing symptoms. If you are ill, you are not bound by the obligation to attend Mass, including on Sunday. Out of charity to others, sick individuals should not attend Mass or other liturgical events.
Distribution of the Precious Blood from the chalice is suspended until further notice.
The Sign of Peace is temporarily suspended. After the Our Father and Prayer of Peace by the priest, the Lamb of God will follow immediately.
We do not encourage the holding of hands during Mass.
If applicable, please strongly consider receiving Communion in your hand rather than on the tongue.

The Diocese continues to be in touch with state and local health authorities and will alter these directives as needed. Please let us continue to pray for all who are sick and affected by this virus.
