Operating as usual

[02/17/21]   Parents, students, and teachers of LPS,

Given the snow cover, the sub-freezing temperatures, road conditions, blackouts, water supply issues, the locusts, frogs, and lice, not to mention the pending invasion of the body-snatchers, it seems best for us to hole up in place (i.e. stay home) for the rest of the week. I will make you this promise: If you will do so, next week will be different from this. If that's not soul-stirring, I don't know what is.

Arnie Robertstad

[02/15/21]   Given the rolling power outages, the frigid temperatures, and the anticipated snow Wednesday, we are cancelling all classes and events at Lakewood Presbyterian School on Tuesday and Wednesday, February 16 and 17. We will make a decision about Thursday and Friday later this week. Stay warm.

Arnie Robertstad

[02/12/21]   Today it is cold outside, but the reports I see on the local news indicate that the roads are not icy. Here's hoping that is accurate information. We will be open for classes. But, as always on these marginal weather days, any parents who are not comfortable driving in may keep their children home with an excused absence.

Just for your further information, if the forecasts for single digit temperatures next Tuesday prove accurate, we will not be open whether there is left over snow on the roads or not. That is just too cold for us to be out and about, given what could happen. But we will let you know about that for sure either Monday night or Tuesday morning.

[02/11/21]   No school today

What an amazing end to this school year. Thanks so much to Ashley Moss and Chelsea Harmon for the wonderfully over the top Christmas party. The generosity and creativity were so richly shared, I was amazed. It was just another example of the parental enthusiasm and flexibility that have marked this year. Thank you all for your gracious, thoughtful gifts to us teachers, you are all so dear.

Firefighter Charlie Rickerson came to visit my class today for the letter Ff and our study of fire safety. He answered our questions fire safety and showed us what he looked like all dressed up. Then he raced to get dressed while I timed him and made it in 1 minute. He’s someone you could count on to get there fast in a fire. Thanks for your service Firefighter Charlie!

Come join your Lakewood Presbyterian Theatre Department, Varsity Chorus, and new Junior Varsity Chorus for a staged reading of Ian Doescher’s imaginative retelling, William Shakespeare’s Christmas Carol next Thursday, December 10 at either our 1:00 pm matinee or our 7:00pm evening performance. The show follows the well known story of the misanthropic, miserly Scrooge as he is transformed on Christmas Eve through the sights revealed by various ghosts and spirits. Musical interludes add to the festive mood. Admission is free, donations are welcomed. Chairs will be set in the gym in small clusters to allow for family groups to sit together. Masks are encouraged but not required.

[12/04/20]   What a great show tonight by the elementary students under the stellar direction of Laurie Latham. Thank you Lord for the happy voices rising to praise you and your Son. I’m always amazed at the delightful songs, interesting ensembles, and choreographed spacing. What a lot of joyful work went into tonight. It’s beginning to feel a lot like Christmas, everywhere I go.

We experimented with apples today. We twisted off the stems, we counted the seeds in a Gala vs a Granny Smith and we dropped water, lemon juice, and grape on apple slices to see which one prevented browning the best. Science is so fun!!

Lakewood Presbyterian School

Lakewood Presbyterian School has provided a classical Christian education in East Dallas to hundreds of students in grades K-12 for over thirty years now. We have helped prepare our graduates for success in higher education and for fulfillment in their callings in the community, the church, and the family. Our perspective is Biblical and Reformed. The annual cost per student is $2,750. Check out our website at http://www.lakewoodpres.com to see if this is the school for your children or grandchildren.

We are planning and hoping to be open as normal this fall, but we are also working on contingency plans if we need to shut down or make adjustments due to COVID-19. We are committed to continue providing an education to our students regardless of the challenges that may arise.

If you look closely at this photo, you’ll see a cookie character of each student. Today should be our final dress rehearsal with all the nerves and laughter and mistakes and triumphs. Tomorrow should be opening night and if all goes well, we might have a little bit to share with you. Miss these fun and funny youngsters, hope to be back to normal soon.

Lakewood Presbyterian | LPS

Our students, parents, and teachers are all aware of this, but for the sake of any non-school families who may be considering the school for next year, a bit of information about what we are doing during the shut-down.

All of our teachers have made provision for the students to continue learning what they would have been taught in school. At the elementary level this includes on-line story time for kindergartners, educational materials and guidance provided by teachers to the parents, and regular on-line check-ins by the teachers. For secondary students the teachers are conducting classes on various audio and visual formats. Essays, quizzes, and tests are going back and forth over the internet. It is not as good as being there, but it is much better than nothing.

We are still monitoring phone messages if any parents would like to make inquiries about enrollment for next year. Hopefully, things will be back to normal by then. We have openings in most of our elementary grades and in all of our secondary grades. Check out the website, and contact us, if you are interested. www.lakewoodpres.com 214-321-2864

[03/17/20]   Parents, Teachers, and Students of Lakewood Presbyterian School,

We have received a recommendation from the president's Coronavirus Task Force that schools in cities that have experienced community transmission of the virus be closed. Dallas is such a city. With this new information, the session and diaconate of Lakewood Presbyterian Church have declared the school to be closed, effective tomorrow, Tuesday, March 17. This closing will remain in effect through April 13. As that day nears we will determine whether to re-open or to extend the closing. This closing includes all classes, extra-curricular activities, and the aftercare programs.

Tomorrow morning between 9:00 and 11:00 Janice Gilbert and I will be at the school to distribute to the parents the students' textbooks which remained at the school. Please try to make that window.

You may expect to hear from your children's teachers about assignments within the next few days.

We will miss being with you all, but pray that God will do something extraordinary through this experience.

Arnie Robertstad

[03/15/20]   To the parents of Lakewood Presbyterian School,

You are all aware of and share the concerns about the coronavirus pandemic that have prompted emergency declarations from our president, governor, county court, and mayor. We of the session and diaconate of Lakewood Presbyterian Church have the responsibility to make our best judgment, based on information available, as to what this means for the conduct of our school ministry.

We have made the following decisions, which will carry us through the next four weeks:

1. Classes and all related activities will be suspended beginning with the week of March 22, 2020. If conditions allow, classes and all related activities will resume the week of April 12, 2020.

2. Classes and all related activities will be held the week of March 15, 2020. But any student whose parents choose to keep at home will be granted an excused absence for the classes missed.

When the students leave school on Friday, March 20, we will send them home with all their books, so they can continue to work and learn under your guidance while they are out of class. Should you keep them home earlier this week, you may come to the school to get their books. Teachers will be asked to send home, either by hand or by email, instructions on the work that should be done.

Some of you will be on the frontlines of treating people with this virus in coming weeks. We pray for you. Some of you are yourselves among the most vulnerable, or have among your close family and friends those who are at particular risk. We pray for you. All of you will be putting up with all manner of inconvenience and hardship. We pray for you.

May God through this severe providence, His word, and His Spirit work for good in our nation, state, county, city and community.

Arnie Robertstad

Since we missed the past couple months, we are doing a double feature this month! Our February alumni of the month are Jon and Alice Hutt. Jon and Alice both grew up in Lakewood Presbyterian Church as family friends, and they were married in August of 2018. They both still attend church at LPC along with their families.

Jon started at LPS in 8th grade and graduated in 2007. While at LPS, Jon played basketball and was involved in theater and journalism. He also was on a club baseball team outside of LPS. Jon said that his favorite LPS memory was when he practically lived with the Robertstad’s during the basketball season. His parents lived in Rowlett and he needed to stay on this part of town for games and practices in the evening, so he ended up at the Robertstad’s most days. After graduating, Jon attended Texas Tech and received his Masters of Science in Accounting and is now a licensed CPA. He currently works as a Controller at Sharon Young Inc.

Alice started at LPS in 5th grade and graduated in 2016. Her favorite class at Lakewood was Advanced Mathematics with Mrs. Hise. She participated in basketball, volleyball, yearbook, choir, and theater outside of her regular class schedule. Alice also took dual credit college courses at Dallas community colleges while at LPS to get some of her college core classes finished early. Her favorite memory at LPS was every theater performance week that she was involved in. Those long weeks were great for bonding with fellow students. Alice recently received her Bachelors of Science in Electrical Engineering from UTD and now works as a Thin Films Process Engineer at Texas Instruments.

Alumna of the month, featuring Marisa Latham! Marisa started at Lakewood in 7th grade and graduated in 2010. One of her favorite classes was Latin with Mr. Robertstad. While at LPS, Marisa participated in choir, theater, basketball, yearbook, carpool, and was a student helper in Miss Nina’s kindergarten class. Outside of LPS, Marisa enjoyed reading and doing any kind of craft she could get her hands on. When asked what her favorite memory was from LPS, she said: “I loved getting to participate in the play Pirates of Penzance. I think anyone who got to be a part of it knows that it was something special! That theater group had such a tight bond after that year.” After LPS, Marisa attended The University of Texas at Dallas where she worked on her prerequisites. She then went to Brookhaven for her Associates in Nursing. She eventually ended up at The University of Texas in Arlington where she received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Marisa has worked at Parkland for almost four years in the operating room, but she is actually about to switch jobs and will be heading up a research program for gynecological surgery at UTSW. Also, if you happen to recognize that guy in the picture, Marisa is married to our very own 3rd and 4th grade teacher, Mr. Will Latham! Will and Marisa attended school together here at LPS and were married in November of 2018. Marisa and Will now live in East Dallas and attend church at Watermark.
