A dream of most Christian parents is that their children and grandchildren will grow up trusting in the Lord and serving Him in a Bible believing church. It is a dream of which our pastors say “Amen.” The future of the church is very much determined by the faithful support of each succeeding generation.
The problem is that when it comes to the twenty-first century, that next generation the church is depending on is fleeing from the it in droves. According to statistics developed by the Pew Research Association, four in ten millennials (those between 23-38 years of age) now say they are religiously unaffiliated. In other words, they are just as likely to say they have no religion as they are to identify as Christian.
There is no single reason why the next generations are rejecting traditional Christianity. For some it is a matter of culture. They might be the children of Christian immigrants or other new Americans who are rejecting the language and customs of their parents’ birth culture and Christian faith is the “baby thrown out with the bath water.” For others, it might be a rejection of the politics that accompanies so much of western evangelicalism. For still others it might be a suspicious rejection of all things institutional. In other words, the reasons are complex and many.
What can be done about it? For Baptist and other evangelicals, there is hope. The hope begins with our faith in an eternal God who will be same for generations to come. He is Sovereign and will not abandon His church. But some of the answer lies in God’s people, the church. And there is a glimmer of hope in some corners of the Christian world, including right here in Dallas.
On Monday, May 3, from 9:00 AM-11:00 AM, The Dallas Baptist Association Evangelism Department will be hosting the first in a series of workshops designed to equip pastors and leaders to reach out to this next generation of Americans. Called “Good News Mondays,” these two hour long workshops will offer practical help and resources for evangelism and discipleship.
The first workshop, titled “Reaching Generation Next,” will provide insight on how to reach the youth and young adults who are fleeing the church. It will be led by Dr. Voltaire Caçal, Dean of International Students at Dallas Theological Seminary and Pastor Nebiye Kelile of Pathway Church.
There is no charge for the workshop, but you need to register so we know you are coming. Here is the registration link: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/good-news-monday-tickets-150923414997.
