First Community Church UCC Dallas

You are welcome here! Join us for worship on Sundays at 11am #eastdallasucc

What We Believe ~ empowers us to open whatever is closed. First Community Church is a congregation formed by many theological traditions. The same is true of the United Church of Christ. FCC and the UCC are bodies where intellectual freedom and the great liberating principles of the Church are cherished. There is no one creed that defines us, but there are affirmations of faith that hold us together in our respective journeys. Here are but a few: Our Core Beliefs: (What is most important to us) •We believe that the Bible is God's primary revelation, but also believe that more light continues to break into this present age. •We believe the historic affirmation "No Creed but Christ." Doctrinal freedom is cherished and honored within our congregation. •We believe in Christian unity and pray the prayer of Jesus, "That they may all be one." •We believe in one God known as Creator, Christ, and Holy Spirit. •We believe that the Church is made up of people in need of God's grace and that it is the Church's work to share God's grace with others as good news. •We believe that the mission of the Church is to work for justice that the peace (Shalom) of God may prevail across the Earth.

Mission: Our mission, through the grace of God, is to open whatever is closed - the church to all people, hearts to God's love, minds to God's story, and lives to be instruments of change.

“Every Day We Get More Illegal” by Juan Felipe Herrera

Today, my heart is breaking and my spirit is angry, for yesterday, ICE raided a business in Allen and arrested 280 undocumented people. Hundreds of children went home from school to find that their family had been broken apart. Whatever your beliefs about immigration, we have to reckon with the fact that real people are affected by the decisions our society's leaders make. The scriptures tell us to remember that we were once immigrants and that we are to treat foreigners as if they were native-born. The prophet Zechariah says, “This is what the Lord Almighty said: ‘Administer true justice; show mercy and compassion to one another. Do not oppress the widow or the fatherless, the foreigner or the poor. Do not plot evil against each other’” (Zech 7:9-10).

If you have friends who are immigrants, reach out and check in with them. These kinds of actions instill a lot of fear in the community, and a little caring and love can go a long way. If you want to learn more about our congregation's justice work, send us a message.

Man stopped by ICE uses 'know your rights' training, prevents immigrants' arrest

Know your rights. It’s so important. An ICE “warrant” is not an arrest warrant. It must be signed by a judge or it is unconstitutional. ICE agents use fear to intimidate people into going along with their orders. Know your rights so that you can protect yourself and your neighbors.

Faith in Texas

A message from the Faith in Texas Clergy Steering Committee, of which Pastor Manda is a member.

We are beyond devastated to hear about the most recent terrorist attack in New Zealand and mourn with our Muslim brothers and sisters worldwide, especially the loved ones of the people killed and injured in the two Christchurch mosques. This senseless act of violent racism and Islamophobia is yet another manifestation of what has become a global movement of hate and white supremacy. We must, now more than ever, lean into our collective strength and stand against the unprecedented rise in attacks against immigrants, Muslims, and other minority groups.

As an organization of many faiths united in our desire to see a just world, we stand in solidarity and repudiate the horrible violence that has taken place. However, it is not enough to just repudiate the violence of guns and bullets and bombs. Physical violence is born of the seeds of racism, bigotry, and hatred. So, we must stand in the face of violence in any form––words, stereotypes, and fear mongering.

We issue a call to action for all people to confront hate in every form and in every place it lurks, including within ourselves. Confront it not with more violence but with our great and overpowering love. We must see in each person––no matter how different from ourselves––the image of God and the human dignity that we all bear. Just as Isaac and Ishmael came together to bury Abraham in the Hebrew Bible, so are we all called to treat one another as kindred and to join together in grief and in commitment to building a more loving world. In doing so, we can help create healing that goes beyond just offering our thoughts and prayers, and actually change our community to make a place where people can truly feel and be safe.
