Have you been wondering how our Texas Legislature works? How does a bill become a law? Why do they meet only every other year for a few months? How can we advocate for issues we care about? Who are my elected officials? Does it make a difference when I call them or write post cards?

Great Sisterhood Social Justice program coming up - "Texas Legislature 101: Know How Your Texas Legislature Works" - fabulous speaker Sharon Hirsch

Monday, August 30th - 7pm - Zoom

RSVP to Robyn Carafiol to get the Zoom link - [email protected] - 214-460-8016 - or leave comment here.
Freedom to Vote Lobby Meeting with Senator John Cornyn
Wednesday, August 4
10:00am via Zoom
Join our Social Justice committee and Reform Jews across Texas to meet with Jack Youngblood of Sen. Cornyn's Office in support of Freedom to Vote. During the meeting we will be advocating in support of the For the People Act (H.R.1 / S.1) and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act (H.R.4), both of which are essential to protecting the right to vote. Let Senator Cornyn know that we support these bills and are willing to participate in the process to ensure their passage and continue our fight for the freedom to vote.
Local leaders are working to set the agenda and slate of speakers.
The Pha-Roast Auction has gone live! Have you checked it out? Even if you can't attend the amazing virtual event next Sunday, please consider being a sponsor or bidding on some of our amazing auction items. Kudos to Alice Rosen and Keo Strull who have worked tirelessly to make this event a success and to Ali Rhodes and Gail Davidson who have gathered amazing auction items. Thank you TSS & The Caring Committee for the emotional support, the food, & the calls for Shayna during all these months. It has meant much more than you know to her & all our family. She is in awe of those she's never met who have shown so much kindness. No words can truly express our thanks....but your kindness has given us strength to continue this journey. Sending love & a virtual hug is all I know to do.♥️
I was married by him back in 1987 when I lived in Dallas. What a wonderful man! I'm sorry about his passing and my condolences go out to his family and his congregation. Mike Boresow (Olathe, Kansas)
Sisterhood is HERE for YOU!
How Can We Help?

Dear Sisters of Temple Shalom,
As we enter into another Shabbat on quarantine, I am acutely aware that many of us are beginning to feel the effects of isolation. One of the hallmarks of Temple Shalom Sisterhood is our ability to make connections across generations.

While we are all practicing physical distancing, Sisterhood would like to provide some virtual, social connecting. To that end, I invite you to complete a simple two question survey to see how we might support you through this challenging time. Please know that I recognize that this is an imperfect, evolving process. But in a time that is full of uncertainty, there is one thing that I know for sure, Sisterhood is here for YOU.

Simple click on the link below to go to the very brief survey.

https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/X6M6YK2

I look forward to reading your thoughts and to responding to your needs. We are all stronger together and we will get through this.

Shabbat Shalom,
Laurel

Catch up on the WRJ Weekly Digest, special writings by Tory May and Joanne B. Fried!

WRJ Weekly Digest, When WRJ Connections make a difference.

Mazel Tov Tory May, thank you for sharing your thoughts and love for WRJ! Tory served as the Cantorial Soloist/Music Director with Congregation Gates of Prayer outside of New Orleans for 30+ years and aided congregants as they dealt with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Fast forward, Tory now lives in Chicago but is still connected to her WRJ Southwest District sisters. As Hurricane Ida rolled through, she felt many things, but mostly the instinct to help. Read Tory's blog in the Weekly Digest.

And Yasher Koach to Joanne B. Fried from our Southwest District on her Parashah in Voices of WRJ.

WRJ Advocacy Updates
At this moment when the legal right to an abortion is under dire threat, the Religious Action Center and the Women of Reform Judaism are proud to support the nationwide Women’s March occurring on October 2nd.

The Freedom to Vote Act was introduced last week by a group of key Senate Democrats, which will increase voter accessibility, establish automatic voter registration, ensure votes are recorded on paper ballots, restore voting rights for formerly incarcerated people, and end partisan gerrymandering for redistricting U.S. House districts.

The Women’s Health Protection Act is being voted on this week in House. The legal right to an abortion is meaningless if it is not accessible. Since 2011 alone, more than 573 state laws have been enacted to restrict abortion access.
