Why people eat pancakes on Shrove Tuesday

Happy Shrove Tuesday/Mardi Gras!🥞 It started when Pope St. Gregory prohibited Christians from eating all forms of meat and animal products during Lent in 500-600 AD.

O Lord, who hast mercy upon all, take away from me my sins, and mercifully kindle in me the fire of thy Holy Spirit. Take away from me the heart of stone, and give me a heart of flesh, a heart to love and adore Thee, a heart to delight in Thee, to follow and enjoy Thee, for Christ's sake, Amen. ~ St. Ambrose of Milan (AD 339-397)

'The water is coming': Rankin County officials urge evacuation as reservoir releases more water

The people of Promise lift in prayer those impacted by these flood waters. "The water is coming," Rankin County EOC warns.

"What will alter the story we find ourselves in, is prayerful people who reflect on the fractures and the malignancies and injustices in front of them—and decide they will change what they can change and do what they are able to do; that they will endeavor to be the answer to as many of their prayers as possible."

Holding the families and community in ongoing prayer. It has been 2 years and yet we remember there remains work to be done.

Continue to trust and hope in the Promises of God. Let your light shine🎇

[02/11/20]   "Just a word of encouragement to those who want to grow in the Spirit and in relationship with God: participate. Be there, make yourself available, encourage others by your presence, invite others to "Come and see" what God is all about in God's house, your Church. And if you are looking for such a church, try us Sunday morning at 10 a.m. at Promise United Church of Christ. See you Sunday! Join us!" All are WELCOME! (Thanks Pastor Haack)

Why Is It Difficult to Get Christians to Care About the Earth?

Because when water is too unsafe to drink, air too toxic to breathe, and the sheer decay of the surrounding environment endangers you and your family — how is God glorified? When the natural physical existence around you is taken away, broken, or heading toward death instead of life, how does this possibly point people to God? What if environmentalism was essential to evangelism?

~ Margaret Cropper 1886-1980

Now, into the keeping of God I put all things of today. All disappointments, hindrances, forgotten things, negligences. All gladness and beauty, love, delight, achievement. And I commit all the people to His shepherding, to his healing and restoring, to his calling and making; through Jesus Christ our Lord. ~ Margaret Cropper 1886-1980

A vino nuevo, odres nuevos”.

There's now a hotline specifically for caregivers

Helping care for a family member or loved one can be hard work. People don't often talk about the emotional toll it can take on the actual caregiver.

Now the Caregiver Action Network is trying to provide help by launching a hotline specifically for caregivers. Depression. Exhaustion. Burnout. Stress. Those are just some of the words people are using to describe their experiences as caregivers.

UCC reaches out with disaster relief following earthquakes in Puerto Rico, launches emergency appeal

The UCC sends relief funds, launches an emergency appeal following a series of earthquakes in Puerto Rico.

“With the news last night that Iran’s response avoided U.S. causalities, there is a narrow window of hope for a de-escalation of this conflict. We urge our President to have the courage to choose peace. As a Just Peace Church, we believe that peace is possible- but it is up to us to make it so. Keep praying, and acting. Keep up the pressure on Congress, and join one of the many prayer vigils being organized across the nation.” From Rev. Michael Neuroth, Policy Advocate for International Issues in the Justice and Witness Ministries, United Church of Christ in Washington DC.
