Blessed Eastertide ✝️"The Fifty Days of Easter are an opportunity to grow into a greater understanding of what it means to be fully alive. Recognizing that there is a Divine spark which animates us, the Easter season is a time to nurture the inner light and enable it to burn more brightly. Over the forty days of the Lenten fast, our focus was to remove those things from our lives which shadowed the inner light. Now in this Easter-tide, the light grows brighter illuminating who we were created to be. It’s in this context that fifth century Augustine of Hippo wrote, “We are an Easter people! Alleluia is our song!” Easter is not merely a day but a way of life." (Lou Kavar, Ph. D)

"Easter season is a time of hope. There still is fear, there still is a painful awareness of sinfulness, but there also is light breaking through. Something new is happening, something that goes beyond the changing moods of our life. We can be joyful or sad, optimistic or pessimistic, tranquil or angry, but the solid stream of God's presence moves deeper than the small waves of our minds and hearts. Easter brings the awareness that God is present even when his presence is not directly noticed. Easter brings the good news that, although things seem to get worse in the world, the Evil One has already been overcome. Easter allows us to affirm that although God seems very distant and although we remain preoccupied with many little things, our Lord walks with us on the road and keeps explaining the Scriptures to us. Thus there are many rays of hope casting their light on our way through life." ‪[SHOW ME THE WAY]

[03/23/21]   Thank you Rev. Winner Laws:

John 17:20 Jesus said to her, “Do not hold on to me, because I have not yet ascended to the Father. But go to my brothers and say to them, ‘I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.’”

Mary was persistent to find Jesus after the Pharisees buried in the tomb after he died on the cross. She wanted to make sure he had a proper burial. When she got there, she found the stone rolled away and only the linen he was wrapped in lying on the ground. She was shocked and amazed that Jesus appeared before her. She wanted to embrace him and let him know how happy she was to see him.

There are many times when we have not seen family, family of choice, or friends for extended periods of time as a result of serving in the armed forces, job duties across the country, or even to follow a spouse or partner because they got a new assignment. We lose touch for one reason or another. When we finally see them again, we are elated and want to hug, kiss, or just be close to them.

In the case of Jesus and Mary they had a very close relationship, so it was natural for her to want to embrace the Savior. Jesus let her know that was not possible due to his physical state. We are experiencing that right now because of the COVID-19 virus. People go into quarantined for 14 days before they can circulate amongst the general public in a lot of countries when they travel outside of the United States. It can be frustrating, but it is for the good of all. Jesus knew that it was for the good of all that Mary did not touch him. He had to remain untouched because he was in a transcending state. He was going to be with Our Creator, the Mother of us all.

Dear Creator of the Universe: During this season, help us to be patient. Help us to recognize that even though we might not be able to celebrate physically by touch, we have much to celebrate because of Jesus’ sacrifice by living, dying, and resurrecting for the good of us all. May we remember to be safe in our encounters when we see loved ones. May it be so in Jesus’ name. Amen

The people of Promise UCC join in collective prayer with the many who find themselves grieving this day. Our hearts are with those whose lives were taken today in Colorado, as they remain with the people of Atlanta. We commit to ongoing faithful action to address gun violence within our country. We will act until one day weapons of death are turned into plowshares and pruninghooks. God, in your mercy, hear our prayers.

A LENTEN PRAYER

"Out of the depths we cry unto you, O God. God, hear our prayer.

For those who have suffered loss,
let your presence bring comfort and understanding.
For those who face personal challenges,
let your presence bring clarity of purpose and resolve.
For those who are weighed down by the times,
let your presence bring health of mind and spirit -- and hope.
For those who seek to make this a meaningful Lent,
let your presence bring new interpretations of cross --
a cross that does not subtract but adds meaning to life.

In all, teach us what it means to be a servant, one who seeks
the well-being of the other -- for therein lies our greatest joy
in life.

May we as family come together to do this -- to be a light on
the hill, ministering to the world around us, bringing that ray
of Jesus love to all that we do.

It is a tall challenge, but with you by our side, we shall feel
confident, enthused, ready to give our all for the sake of
Good News. You indeed are the Good News we seek. Let us
announce it, live it with all those whom we meet, especially
those who, at this time, are in dire need of it.

Glory be to you, O God! Help us now to walk that path toward Holy Week and the great day of Easter that is to come." Amen

[03/16/21]   Thank you Rev Winner Laws:

Matt 6:16 (NRSV): “And whenever you fast, do not look dismal, like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces so as to show others that they are fasting. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward.”

It is Lenten Season, and a lot of congregational members participate in activities related to this Christian tradition. People might decide to fast during these 40 days. One might decide not to eat meat, sweets, sugar, or abstain from being on social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, Periscope, Twitter) or television.

In some cases, you will replace these habits by eating healthier or reading more about God. In all cases fasting allows individuals the opportunity to evaluate how you are living your life. In a lot of cases, it strengthens your faith and your relationship with the Creator of the Universe.

Fasting is not a thing to do to get public accolades which is the point Jesus was making in this scripture. It is an activity that allows you to spend more time getting closer to God, understanding your limitations, as well as releasing things that consume your time. Jesus’ journey in the desert for 40 days included him sacrificing things were not known by others. He spent time praying, communing with God, and fasting in the wilderness. During this Lenten Season, we want to pray, meditate, and fast to be more like Jesus and get closer to God, the Creator of the Universe.

Dear God: Help me be committed through this season of fasting so that I get closer to you as I listen for your direction and your will. Help me also to uplift others through this Lenten Season. May we all be transformed. May it be so in your darling son Jesus’ name. Amen!

Open and Affirming

We are an open and affirming, welcoming community of faith. We seek daily to be faithful in our welcome. No matter who you are, or where you are on life’s journey, you are welcomed here! Come and join with us, as we seek God’s presence, wrestle together with the difficult questions about faith, and share the Good News of God’s love with our greater community.
