Hurricane Ida Updates: Get Involved!
Submitted by Rev. Phil Hodson, Conference Minister

Last week I wrote you briefly about the damage incurred by Little Farms and what’s happened as a result of Hurricane Ida in New Orleans. The most important thing we can do right now is give, as we are able, to support UCC Disaster Relief directly through the 2021 Storm Appeal. These funds go first to caring for congregations affected by the hurricane, then to support local partners that have been thoroughly vetted and are doing good work on the ground right now. By coming together we can make a tremendous difference for many in what the road ahead looks like!

Additionally, I will be personally traveling to Louisiana to survey damage, visit with folks on the ground, and offer what pastoral care I can in the coming weeks. I received word this past weekend from Greg Johnson that Terreborne and Lafourche Parishes, where the storm made initial landfall, have been hard-hit. They need hygiene kits and cleanup buckets. If your congregation is willing to tackle this important work, please call Stacey at the Conference office at 830-625-2212 or by email at [email protected] and we will make arrangements to pick up these items so that I might carry them to the affected area. Greg knows who to connect with on the ground to put these goods to work immediately and I would like to make an initial trip by September 25.

We pray for the folks affected by this storm and we know it isn’t likely to be the last of the season. Let’s put our hands to work alongside our hearts and make a difference!

A Franciscan meditation in our troubles:

We call to you in times of anxiety to give us the strength and will to bear our burdens. We are ever in your watch. We know that in our hearts. But our struggles make our memory short. We forget all those times your compassion pulled us through and renewed us. Help us to remember you never forget us.

As we journey onwards in life, more and more spaces within us fill with absence. We begin to have more and more friends among the dead. Every person suffers the absence of their past. It is utterly astonishing how the force and fiber of each day unravel into the vacant air of yesterday. You look behind you and you see nothing of your days here. Our vanished days increase our experience of absence. Yet our past does not deconstruct as if it never was. Memory is the place where our vanished days secretly gather. Memory rescues experience from total disappearance. The kingdom of memory is full of the ruins of presence. It is astonishing how faithful experience actually is; how it never vanishes completely. Experience leaves deep traces in us. It is surprising that years after something has happened to you the needle of thought can hit some groove in the mind and the music of a long vanished event can rise in your soul as fresh and vital as the evening it happened.

ICYMI: The Dallas Independent School District will require face masks for students and staff, defying Gov. Greg Abbott's order which bans mask mandates.

Superintendent Dr. Michael Hinojosa said this was important to keep the district's students, staff, and families safe. Read the full story: https://bit.ly/3jFm8yp

[08/09/21]   "God can do something with broken people. It takes broken soil to grow a bumper crop. In life you will be dealt a bad hand, but when you know Jesus the bad hand you've been dealt will not determine if you will win. The good news is you've got a partner who says, 'I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. I cannot lose!' Therefore you cannot lose no matter what hand you've been dealt. Trust your partner! " Rev. Freddy Haynes

Breathe, trusting God to always be near❤

Praying Pause

LET GOD TRANSFORM YOU

Let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think.—Romans 12:2

~ Breathe... the only thing you have to do right this moment is let God breathe within you...

~ Enjoy this moment of rest... change the way you think about this moment... enjoy being present...

~ Nothing to do and nowhere to go this particular moment... breathe...

~ Let God transform you right now... you are loved without having to do anything... without having to be anyone...

~ Breathe... whenever you have a negative thought today, breathe and let God transform you into a new and joyous person... breathe...

The world as we have created it is a process of our thinking. It cannot be changed without changing our thinking.—Albert Einstein

Prayer of Good Courage
(from Holden Village)

"O God, you have called your servants to ventures of which we cannot see the ending, by paths as yet untrodden, through perils unknown.

Give us faith to go out with good courage, not knowing where we go, but only that your hand is leading us and your love supporting us, through Jesus
Christ our Lord." Amen
