Studio At Union

Studio At Union

Thought this seemed like something Union folks might want to do:
Young Community Innovators Gathering Application
Do you want to create the future of community?

Casper ter Kuile and Angie Thurston, authors of How We Gather, alongside Alec Gewirtz, a Fulbright Research Scholar, and Serena Bian, Community Manager at First Round, are convening a group of committed young adult community innovators for a three-day gathering to examine new models of gathering. The Young Community Innovators Gathering will assemble an intimate cohort of young adults, ages 21-27, who are committed to devoting their lives to creating new structures of community during a period of growing religious disaffiliation, distrust across social differences, and debilitating loneliness.
are you guys meeting at the gingerman at 7pm still or has the new space opened? I see one thing on the site but i swear i've read otherwise...where can i find you guys? :)

For the intellectual, questioning, young professionals and creatives of Dallas, Studio is a novel investigation of faith and community.

A message from our pastor and friend Michael Baughman about the tragedy and horror in Orlando.

from our Community Curator in response to Orlando:

Dear Dallas LGBTQ Community:

Sanctuary is one of the core values at Union, the little non-profit coffee shop I lead that serves as a church for many. Because we value sanctuary so much, I mourn all the more when sanctuary is broken for any people. For sure, sanctuary was broken on Saturday night, but it is not the first time. The terror of June 12th is indicative of smaller, but consistent terrors that chip away at our Dallas sanctuary for the LGBTQ community. Gay men have been targeted for assault. LGBTQ Texans are denied fair protection under the law. These are problems our society must address collectively and as individuals.

I wish I could promise that Union will always be a sanctuary for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer members of our community. Orlando revealed that none of us can make that much-desired promise. There will always be those outside of our control who choose violence over love in pursuit of their broken dream for the world. As the pastor for an organization that values sanctuary, I must to my level best to advocate for sanctuary so I can promise the following:

I, as a pastor in the United Methodist Church, will do my level best to affirm your sacred worth. I promise to value you and share with the world my opinion that you are not incompatible with Christian teaching. I hope to offer hospitality and whatever measure of sanctuary that I can.

I, as a citizen, will call the sin of hate crimes the sin that it is. We, as a society, cannot repent of our sins until we are willing to name them. I hope that we will speak truthfully about what has been lost.

I, as a small business leader, will listen for what Union can do to offer sanctuary to members of the LGBTQ community. One of the great pains in the wake of overwhelming tragedy is helplessness. I confess feeling helpless. I don’t know how to help, but stand ready to do what I can. I hope that you will teach me.

I, as a preacher, will describe Orlando’s mass shooting with appropriately offensive language. What happened at Pulse is sh*t. Offensive realities call for offensive language.

I, as a child of God, will do my level best to love you, bear witness to pain, struggle to find hope and walk with you. You are not alone.

Tonight (Tuesday, June 14th) at 8:00pm, one of our Union worshipping communities will light candles for the victims, share in conversation about how we respond to tragedy, share our fears, and look together for hope. All are welcome. I pray you will join us and will invite us to be a part of your acts of remembrance, hope and healing

I hope that, in Union, you will always find a generous friend, a welcome atmosphere, a great cup of coffee and an authentic community who loves who you are and cultivates the divine spark in everyone.

Rev. Mike Baughman

[02/01/16]   What is Studio? Studio is a seminarian pounding out his soul to "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For," pressing his hurt, his struggle, and soul against the copper strings of his guitar, stomping his foot as if the stage itself would yield to his struggle for faith in the God he has dedicated his life to.

Studio is a room full of people joining in the chorus we've known in our heart that Timothy proudly, painfully, and maybe hopefully proclaims.
We still haven't found what we're looking for, but we are here.

Studio is joy

Hope you'll find yourself at Mama's Party on Monday night because you'll be experiencing so much joy and beauty from the Coca family!! We love having Natalie and Jeremy on our stage so we know Monday night is going to be awesome!

update on Kuneo / Studio giving

A Brief Word from Mike

Dear Studio / Kuneo Community:As we wrap up 2015, I wanted to thank you for your generosity, share with you a report on 2015 giving and invite you to make a final donation for 2015.The good news...In 2015, we budgeted $30,000 in income from Kuneo/Studio donations. To date we've received roughly $32,000!!! That's about 30% more than the previous year. Thank you!The challenge...I think that today and tomorrow, we can raise at least another $3,000 to raise our total giving to $35,000. If we can do that, we can make some much needed improvement to fix up Union's walls that have been chipped and dinged over time. Also, I will voluntarily play the Melodica with the Misfit Whatevers TWO TIMES this coming Lent as an act of penance for whatever I have done wrong in my life. The reality...I think it's important to give to the things that give us life. Union is a godsend to me and to my family. Rachel and I dedicate 10% of my income and some from hers every month to Union. I wouldn't ask y'all to donate to something we aren't willing to give to ourselves. Thank you for all that you do to make Union amazing!Peace, Mike

By the end of January, recurring donations will once again be available through our website. Please bear with us (and keep giving supporting us) in the meantime. Thank you! Click here for an update from wrapping up 2015 donations! 12/30/2015

your support makes good work possible

Union Responds to North TX Tornados

Less than 12 hours after tornados ravaged North Texas, Union announced a partnership with Tango Tab and University Park United Methodist Church to feed tornado survivors and first responders. With only a few hours notice, 300+ volunteers rallied to produce 13,000+ sandwiches, 10,000+bags of chips / cookies and hundreds of supplies necessary for an immediate disaster response. Beginning in February, 10% of all coffee sales will benefit disaster relief efforts. In the meantime, we will collect donations at Union to be delivered on a daily basis to area distribution centers and members of our community are signing up for Emergency Responder Training so that they can be boots on the ground in the coming weeks. We are only able to do work like this because you donate to and drink coffee at Union. I hope that you will consider making a donation to Union as a part of your year end giving so that we can continue to support good work in 2016 and beyond.Peace, Mike Baughman Community Curator & Pastor
