Our Good Friday service will be Friday, April 2nd at 7:00 pm in the Sanctuary. Good Friday is always a solemn service that allows us to reflect on the depths our God would go to show His immense love for us. This service will be full of scripture in the tradition of Tenebrae. Tenebrae is a Latin word meaning "darkness." As we retell Jesus' journey that first Good Friday we will extinguish candles, culminating in the final "Christ Candle" indicating Christ's death on the Cross. Many stay away from such a service not wanting to feel the weight of God's sacrifice for us. However, I encourage you to take the journey knowing that joy does coming in the morning and when we travel Good Friday together, Easter is all the sweeter. Good Friday service will be both in-person and online.

Holy Week is here! The most sacred week of our Christian faith. As we welcome Jesus coming in all authority and ultimate humility, may we follow Him into the great mystery of the love of God on the Cross and the unimaginable miracle of life arisen at the Tomb. It is truly the depth and the height of the heart of God on full display!

We invite you to join us this week as we worship! We hope you can join us, either in-house or online, to receive the gift of grace being given in Christ during this week.

This Thursday, April 1st at 7:00 pm, we will celebrate Maundy Thursday Service or "Holy Thursday." This service will look very different this year. Our plan is to gather outside under the bell tower. You are encouraged to bring your lawn chairs or sit in your cars if you are more comfortable. Chairs will be provided if you would like to sit outside and did not bring your own. We want to gather in a way that allows us to safely sing together as a congregation. "Holy Thursday" is a time when we remember the first communion that Jesus with his disciples. We will be using music from Taize community tradition. Taize music is short refrains used in repetition or in canon as a tool of worship that is contemplative and meditative. This service is only in-person.

We look forward to worshipping with you!

On Tuesday, March 2, Gov. Greg Abbott announced that starting March 10, the State of Texas will end the state-wide mandate for the wearing of masks and that all businesses will be permitted, if they choose, to operate at 100% capacity. Even as he said this he also stated that “individuals are strongly encouraged to wear face coverings over the nose and mouth wherever it is not feasible to maintain six feet of social distancing from another person not in the same household.” Furthermore, “every person (including individuals, businesses, and other legal entities) is strongly encouraged to use good-faith efforts and available resources to follow the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) health recommendations, found at www.dshs.texas.gov/coronavirus.”

While we celebrate great progress and the strides made to contain the spread of COVID-19, the virus is still very much a threat to many of our church members and those in the community we serve. The Dallas County Health and Human Services Risk Level is still at a “Red” level. This warning means to “Stay Home and Stay Safe.”

Because of this, we will continue to follow the current Covid protocol we have maintained at Spring Valley since the adoption of our Covenant of Caring. This means we will continue to wear masks, socially distance, and refrain from singing at worship. When persons enter the church we will continue to record temperatures and respond to the Covid protocol questions.

We join with you in prayerfully looking towards the day when all will return to church and we will be able to resume operations under more “normal” conditions. Until then we are most grateful for your continuing to observe our “Covenant of Care” Covid protocols and for your ongoing patience, understanding, and support as we make progress together in our ministry at Spring Valley.

Help Freda and Sharon!

Dear Friends,

Some of you may have heard our Church Administrator, Sharon Clark, and her mother Freda, escaped a fire at their home early last Thursday morning. The damage was significant. They may be displaced from their home for some time. We have created a sign-up of just some of the things they will need to begin to put their lives back together. As their church family, let’s put our best effort forward by donating new or gently used items. We will be collecting these items at the church and storing them temporarily in the Parlor.

Thank you in advance for anything you can do to help.

Friday was Covenant Day. You may look to your calendar and ask, “What’s that?” I don’t see it anywhere on my scheduler. I see “Easter”, “Mother’s Day”, and “Father’s Day”, but “Covenant Day”?

“Covenant” is a healthy, whole-making relationship built on faithfulness and trust that grows love and peace in our lives. Our Christian faith is grounded in the covenant God makes with us through Jesus Christ.

John Wesley, the founder of the Methodist movement, observed Covenant Services with his early Methodist Societies. Even though there was no official “Covenant Day”, he realized that intentionally grounding Methodists in God’s grace through a special worship service united the faithful with God and with one another in ways that brought blessings to their lives and sustained them in their service with Christ.

Today the Bishop zoom called the pastors to celebrate Covenant Day as ordained in the North Texas Conference. It was an annual time of worship with fellow clergy.

At Spring Valley we celebrate our covenant with Christ whenever we gather for worship – online or onsite. Especially when we share in the sacrament of the Lord’s Supper we participate in a spiritual communion that blesses us with grace and strengthens us for service. As we gather at the table we are renewed and restored in our covenant with God.

Covenant Day. It’s actually not just one special day a year. It’s every day we deliberately focus on living with our Lord in faith and serving our world with his love. I’m grateful to share the gift of Covenant Day with you today and everyday through our ministry together at Spring Valley.

We hope you will join us in worship today - visit us at www.svumc.org/online.
