Since we cannot gather for our Ash Wednesday service, we are sharing a little about today as it marks the beginning of Lent. This kid-friendly explanation might help answer some of the “whys”. Wednesday marks the beginning of the season of Lent in our church. Lent is the 40 days before Easter. The reason it lasts 40 days is because we remember that Jesus spent 40 days alone in the desert without food and he was tempted by the devil.
Many Christians get ready for Easter by using these 40 days to repent, which means we’re saying to God we did wrong things and we are sorry. Some people like to give up one important thing to them, like eating desserts or watching tv, so they can spend more time praying to Jesus. We want to grow our relationship with God. We wear ashes to show that we want to change during Lent and become a better person for God. These ashes come from the burned palms from Palm Sunday last year so they are always cold. These ashes are also a symbol showing how much we need God because without him, we are all just ashes. The ashes are put our forehead in the shape of a cross, like the one Jesus died on for all of us. After Lent is over, we are all ready to celebrate the most important day in the church – Easter!
