The Epworth Project is a scholarship program of The Missional Wisdom Foundation, providing Epworth Scholars a context to experience emergence, new monasticism, and missional ecclesiology within the United Methodist tradition. Epworth Scholars live in a monastic house, engage in ministries of hospitality in the neighborhood, learn about the theory and practices of emerging and new monastic ministries, and participate in the worship and mission of a New Day community or other approved missional community.
[01/06/20] Greetings and Happy New Year! 2020 brings some exciting changes to Cochran House, including the need for a new Community Meal today. So, starting this week, we will have Community Meal on Thursday evenings. Doors open at 6:30, and the meal begins at 7:00. We hope to see you there!

[12/02/19] Hello friends! Due to illness and travel for the residents of Cochran House, we will not be having community meal tomorrow. However, we WILL have community meal December 10 and 17, during which we will watch Star Wars Episodes VII and VIII as we prepare for the release of Episode IX on December 20. And, given enough time, we will probably figure out a way to connect our Star Wars preparation to the waiting and preparation of Advent, so you really don't want to miss our last two community meals of 2019!
[09/17/19] Unfortunately, Community Meal tonight is CANCELLED. Justin has come down with the stomach bug, and we want to be cautious about not spreading that around. We appreciate your prayers for Justin and the rest of the house as we attempt not to catch the bug. We will resume Community Meal next week 9/24 @ 7pm with a Teaching Night with Matt Schroeder, who will be sharing his love of comic books!
We had a great time at our second teaching night! Davis Rhodes came and taught us about Tanzanian humor by telling us stories from his time in Tanzania! We’re also excited for our next teaching night on September 24 @ 7 when our friend Matt Schroeder is coming to teach us about comic books!
[08/26/19] We are trying a new experiment—Teaching Nights! Our first one is this Tuesday night during Community Meal when Ryan and Lisa are going to teach on Disability Representation in Pop Culture. Come on over for snacks and intriguing conversation around Avatar the Last Airbender and Speechless at 7:00! If you can’t make this one, we will be having a Teaching Night on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday’s of the month. And, if you have a skill or area of interest you would like to share, let us know!!

Gardening with youth from St Lukes UMC in Lubbock
God said, “Let the water under the sky be gathered to one place and let dry ground appear.” It was so. God called the dry ground “land” and the gathered waters he called “seas.” God saw that it was good.
God said, “Let the land produce vegetation: plants yielding seeds according to their kinds, and trees bearing fruit with seed in it according to their kinds.” It was so. The land produced vegetation—plants yielding seeds according to their kinds, and trees bearing fruit with seed in it according to their kinds. God saw that it was good. There was evening, and there was morning, a third day. Genesis 1:9-13
For Morning Prayer this beautiful rainy morning, we read and reflected on this Scripture, then prepared the garden for planting and put some basil and tomatoes in the ground while Justin potted some basil and rosemary. It was a beautiful time together with the earth. As Justin shared this morning, in creation we have agency and the earth is dependent on our agency. Let us serve God and creation well this day.
Potatoes are harvested! Come to community meal Monday for homegrown potato salad!

Make us worthy, Lord, to serve our brothers and sisters throughout the world, who live and die in poverty and pain. Give them today, through our hands, their daily bread and, through our understand, love; give peace and joy. Amen.
--Common Prayer, Midday Prayer
"I myself will be the shepherd of my sheep, and I will make them lie down," says the Lord God. "I will seek the lost, and I will bring back the strayed, and I will bind up the injured, and I will strengthen the weak, but the fat and the strong I will destroy. I will feed them with justice." Ezekiel 34:15-16
This morning Ezekiel 34:1-16, Acts 11:19-30 and Oscar Romero challenged us with a reminders to listen to the unsettling Word of God, let it get under our skin, and provoke us out of our self-centered sin and into abundant life lived together.
"Christianity is not just about going up when we die; it's about bringing God's kingdom down, all the way to the dirt in our gardens." --Common Prayer: A Liturgy for Ordinary Radicals
[05/22/13] Teach us, Lord, to deny ourselves for the sake of your kingdom. Help us distinguish self-righteous suffering from the suffering that comes from bearing our crosses as we follow you. Amen.
