And come back in the evening for an entertaining event with Mark Kreditor. Why are almost all the great Holiday song classics written by Jewish songwriters? The songs are fun to sing. And, we’ll belt out some Chanukah standards, too. A memorable evening of fun! Nosh provided. Program is $18.

[09/20/19]   Late Night Show host Stephen Colbert, who lost his father and two brothers in a plane crash when he was 10 years old, recently shared these meaningful words:

"My mother used to say that during hardships in your life, try to look at this moment in the light of eternity. Try to see this how God might see it. Which is what we see right now, as opposed to the past or the future, which we can't affect in any way. You can try to see this present moment - whether it's good or bad, a hardship or a victory - with humility, with acceptance, and with love. You can't love something until you can accept it."

Shabbat Shalom!

Bluegrass Band Nefesh Mountain Praise Nature, Sing in Hebrew in ‘A Mighty Roar’

If you attended SISterhood's major fundraising event earlier this year, you will recall Nefesh Mountain. Today, their new video 'A Mighty Roar' was shared by Rolling Stone magazine. Congratulations Nefesh Mountain! We knew you when! Husband-and-wife duo Eric Lindberg and Doni Zasloff put a unique spin on string music in gorgeous new video

The upcoming Torah Fund pin is GORGEOUS. Stay tuned for info on who the Shearith Israel SISterhood honoree will be. Pins will be available for purchase at The Gallery at Shearith Israel!

Announcing the Torah Fund theme and pin for 5780/2019-2020! Chesed means “kindness” in Hebrew. The word can also be translated as “lovingkindness,” to convey the deep love that animates Jewish acts of kindness, done without thought of reward.

The Bible has numerous examples of chesed, such as Abraham and Sarah welcoming three strangers to their tent in the heat of the day; Abraham’s servant’s prayer for a wife for Isaac, answered by Rebecca who offers water to him and to his camels; and Ruth, who shows loyalty and kindness to Naomi, adopting her religion and peoplehood, after Naomi has experienced great loss. The rabbinic tradition enacted many laws to formalize our commitment to kindness, making chesed one of the three central pillars of Jewish life, as Shimon HaTzaddik taught: “The world rests on three things, on Torah, on service of God, and on deeds of kindness” (Pirkei Avot 1:2).

The 5780 (2019-2020) Torah Fund pin depicts a heart surrounded by three circles, one larger than the next. This symbolizes the heart of kindness, which Jews enact in ever-widening realms of generosity: from family, to community, to the larger world; from North America, to Israel, to the world; or from sisterhood, to region, to the larger world of Women’s League for Conservative Judaism. And as it is said in Psalm 89, may we build a world of kindness.
