A brief something new to learn today. Have you heard of Charles Sumner?

A photo taken inside the U.S. Capitol on January 6 shows a man carrying a large Confederate battle flag, with a portrait of a Civil War politician in the photo's background. The Library research team noted an interesting backstory about the man in this portrait. Charles Sumner, a Massachusetts senator, was beaten almost to death on May 22, 1856—on the Senate floor—for giving a courageous anti-slavery speech. We discovered Mary Baker Eddy had this image of Sumner in her photo album and she also mentioned him in the 1st through the 15th editions of “Science and Health”:

“Charles Sumner's unswerving adherence to right made him present more than others the true idea, and less than others the beliefs of man. His professions were few, his acts colossal.” (3rd edition, vol. 2, p. 49)

Does the name Susan B. Anthony ring a bell? Anthony was an advocate for both abolitionism and women’s suffrage. She also expressed an interest in Christian Science. Anthony wrote to Mary Baker Eddy, the Discover and Founder of Christian Science, on multiple occasions, heard her speak, and owned a copy of Eddy's book, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures. She even took Primary class instruction in Christian Science healing with Eddy’s student, Laura Lathrop. http://ow.ly/uEP550B8L0p

“'In natural law and in religion the right of woman to fill the highest measure of enlightened understanding and the highest places in government, is inalienable...' [wrote Mary Baker Eddy, the founder of Christian Science.] ... Societal laws should increasingly reflect the equality of all people, but laws alone can’t bring about equal treatment." How do we bring about the change of heart that's needed?
