Passion Week continues

Judas Iscariot – The Son of Perdition (Matt. 26:14-16; Mark 14:10,11; Luke 22:3-6; John 17:12)
Judas Iscariot was one of the twelve disciples of Jesus. He was the treasurer for the group, but he also stole from the treasury. He wasn’t a man who showed compassion and love for others. How could one of the twelve be a lover of money and unjust in his responsibilities? How could a disciple of Jesus be an undercover sinner? How could one personally chosen to leave all and follow Jesus betray Him? Because, as scripture describes him, Judas was the ‘son of perdition’ – one doomed for destruction. We lose sight of God’s plan of salvation when we struggle with how God could create someone who would be destined for eternal damnation. We should not get lost in trying to question how or why God does what He does. The plan was in motion and Judas’ role was to fulfill scripture (“Even my close friend in whom I trusted, who ate my bread, has lifted up his heel against me. -Psalm 41:9) and to betray Jesus. Satan entered into Judas at the appointed time and he carried out his role as planned by God. His actions led to Christ’s arrest, away from the people, and His subsequent trial and death sentence. God created us for His purpose, for His glory. We have eternal salvation made possible by the atoning work of Jesus. We all have a role to play in God’s eternal plan. Will you pray that God uses you and reveals to you your part in His glorious plan, made possible by the atoning work of Jesus Christ?

Be receptive to the “Good News of Jesus Christ”

Tuesday- What and Whose Authority? (Matt. 21:23-27; Mark 11:27-33; Luke 20:1-8)
In Jerusalem, Jesus’ virtual classroom has now expanded from his inner circle of twelve disciples to all the people who gathered to hear him. He taught one thing – the only thing that counts – the good news of God. The people were amazed at this Teacher and how He taught. The religious leaders (the chief priests, the scribes, and the elders) were not impressed. In fact, they were planning to kill Jesus. How could this uneducated Man exhibit such knowledge? They challenged Jesus, “Tell us by what authority You are doing these things, or who is the one who gave You this authority?” Jesus countered with a question to them, “I will ask you a question…Was the baptism of John from heaven or from men”. If they answered Him, he would answer them. This uneducated and untrained Man stumped them. They reasoned that however they answered would cause a problem between them and the people. They determined their best response was no response! The Jewish preachers, teachers, and church leaders determined they could not answer. They did not answer Jesus, therefore He refused to answer them. Jesus was on His way to Calvary to complete His mission. He made time to teach all who were receptive to Him. The church leaders were not receptive and refused to listen. Will you listen and be receptive to the Good News of Jesus Christ?

Sharing from our sister church

Monday – Cleansing the Temple (Matt. 21:12,13; Mark 11:15-17; Luke 19:45,46)
When Jesus entered the temple in Jerusalem, what did He find? Was the temple “…the house of prayer for all the peoples“ (Isaiah 56:7) or “…a den of robbers” (Jeremiah 7:11)? Jesus witnessed His house being used as a place for secular business activities of the money changers and livestock salesmen capitalizing on the needs of those who would come in for worship and sacrificial offerings. His Holy House had been transformed from a house of prayer and worship to a mere bazaar for the local merchants. Jesus was now in Jerusalem preparing to complete what He came to earth to do but He took time to do some serious ‘housecleaning’. He restored His house to what it was, a house of prayer. Are we taking care of Jesus’ house (the church building) today or have we turned it into a den of thieves or community marketplace where everything takes place, except prayer and worship?
