Come and be blessed, and to bless others with your presence and gifts, friends. It is good that we have a space to gather together and be still with God.
Friends, if you missed today's chapel, you missed a fantastic service.
Here's what you missed: Dr. Wes Allen preached on the story found in Micah 6: 1-8; several students read the text. With multiple voices, the story of the "trial" narrative comes forth. Dr. Allen expressed on those voices, the baliff, the jury, the judge, and of course, the accused and accusor (s), and their involvement. He interprets the text, highlighting the problems with too many conflicts in how we "do justice." He expounds on the wisdom of a colleague, who translates that Hebrew word [for "do justice"] more appropriately as "making justice happen."
So, we have the mountains crying out, "make justice happen!" This is their verdict as the jury, to the people of Israel;...or, more appropriately, to us. Let us be reminded about the sanctity of our covenant with God. To do so means hearing the cries of the oppressed, to pray and act for ends to violent behavior, war, legal and theological restrictions on each other. We must hear them, and "make justice happen." That is our charge.
Dr. Anderson served with his gifts on the organ, and one of our first years, Isabella, wonderfully cantored(? is that a word?) our Psalter prayer! Dr. Scholz even joined in the fun with leading our intercessory prayer.
You missed a beautiful service, and for that I'm sorry, because every service in Perkins Chapel is unique. Please know you're always invited. There's something holy about worshiping with others in that space.
Find your rhythm, feed your soul--you pour so much of yourself out, don't forget to breathe and recenter yourself.
On that note, however, I hope you had a challenging and invitive first week of classes. Be well, friends! And take care of yourselves this semester.
