People report finding Jesus in the strangest ways; today, one of those ways might be in a cake. That’s because it’s Mardi Gras, also known as Fat Tuesday or Shrove Tuesday, the last day to eat King’s Cake before Lent begins.
The King’s Cake is part of festivities to commemorate the Epiphany (twelfth night), the day the Magi (kings) arrived in Bethlehem and presented gifts to the baby Jesus after his birth. The cake is a reenactment of Epiphany, with a bean or baby figurine baked into the cake to symbolize Christ.
The official colors of Mardi Gras--created in 1872 by the Krewe of Rex--purple for justice, green for faith, and gold for power are usually added onto the cake as decoration.
We hope you find Jesus in the strangest ways as you celebrate and walk this season of Lent!

Black History Highlight: Booker T. Washington
Booker T. Washington was an educator, reformer and the most influential spokesman for black Americans between 1895 and 1915. He was born into poverty and had to drop out of school at 9 years old to start working, but was determined to return. At age 16, he had saved enough money to enroll at Hampton Normal & Agricultural Institute. From here, his life was spent aiding others in their education and was a pioneer in the Civil Rights movement.

BLACK HISTORY SPOTLIGHT: Clara Brown.
Trying to sum up the inspiring life of Clara Brown in only a short paragraph is particularly hard. Clara was born into slavery in 1800. After being freed (and split up from her family) in 1856, she headed west in search of her family and better opportunities. She ultimately landed in Denver Colorado amongst the earliest of the Colorado Gold Rush. There, and along the way, she opened up laundry businesses and worked hard to save a small fortune. This fortune, in its entirety, was spent giving back to the community. She funded the building of St. James Methodist Church, aided in the relocation of 900 African American Families and her home served as a hospital, church and hotel to the less fortunate. By age 80, her funds dried up. In 1882, she got word of a woman living in Iowa by the same name as her daughter. To both of their surprise, it was her! They moved back to Denver together until Clara's death. In 1885, she was was elected the first African American and first female member of the Society of Colorado Pioneers. She passed away in her sleep later that year.
