St. Monica/Dallas Nichols & Simpson Pipe Organ

Pictures and information on the Nichols & Simpson pipe organ at St. Monica Catholic Church, Dallas, TX.

St. Monica Fine Arts

When designing the St. Monica organ, we wanted an orchestral instrument that could play literature from all periods of music history.

While we didn’t consider movie music, it really does an impressive job!

If you recognize the melody in the first 15 seconds, hit "Share"!

Are you curious what six of the greatest John Williams movie themes ever would sound like on a grand church organ? Come hear Conner McMains's original John Williams Medley and other exciting music you wouldn't normally hear on Sunday mornings at 'Never On a Sunday' this Friday at 7:30pm at St. Monica Catholic Church! Hi everyone! I just want to mention that one really cool aspect of the Jeremy Filsell recital on March 4 is that he is going to play the Rachmaninov "Symphonic Dances." If you have never heard this work (Rachmaninov's final composition), you should make sure to be there. It's amazing music!

Please plan to come to the recital (3/4 7:30 P.M.) and invite others who might be interested. The recital is going to be amazing!

Great Things are Happening

June 11, Wednesday

What a great week! I wasn't able to go to Dallas on Monday or Tuesday, so there was a lot to hear today! Note that I said 'hear' and not see, as the main visual of the organ was completed last week. All but one stop of the Great is in. The crew has been tuning the Choir, Great and Pedal stops that are in place. The electrical work is impressively tidy - the frightening large nests of wiring are tamed and in order.

St. Monica's Organ Facade is Finished!

June 5, Thursday

What else can I say? It speaks for itself.

In addition to completing the facade, the Walker digital stops were connected and given a green light for voicing. The Great Open Diapason was dropped in just before I returned in the evening to see the complete facade.

Thanks to Joe and Duane for the completed facade pictures. I went up in the lift (again!) to get new pictures of the completed facade, but in the hurry to return to Dallas, I left my back-up battery charging in my office. Please forgive me! Their pics are great, though - and taken from a much higher vantage point than I could ever go!

Thanks for an exciting week Duane, Joe, John, Jorge and Tim from N&S and Brad, Jason and Sam from Colby.

WOW WOW WOW WOW WOW!!!!!

WOW WOW WOW WOW WOW!!!!!

The Rossignol - I've never seen one live! It has a very cool boiling cauldron thing going for it!

The Cymbelstern

SPOILER ALERT: The facade was not complete when this picture was taken. I found, though, that the pesky huge post made it appear that way, so I had to see if it altered my thought process until it was completed. Alas... not so.

[06/05/14]   Today was a big day! I'll download pictures later tonite.

The fact that I'm driving back to Dallas from Fort Worth, having already been to Dallas once today, must mean there are some great pictures to be taken this evening!

BTW - earlier in the week, someone had asked if the organist at St. Monica was (name), which it is not. I think I need to introduce myself at some point. My apologies for not doing so earlier.

There are 2 organists at St. Monica. Jeremy Wirths is the Director of Music; he plays school masses and the other weekend masses that I don't regularly play. I am the Organist; my position entails accompanying the St. Monica Choir rehearsals, playing for the 9:30 and 11:00 masses with the choir, and filling in other masses or rehearsals as needed. My name is Guillermo Martinez; I have been at St. Monica since October of 2009. I have truly enjoyed seeing the music program grow. The highlight of my time at St. Monica has been the renovation of the church and the new organ. Needless to say, the organ project is a milestone event for any congregation and its musicians. I consider myself very fortunate to get to be a part of this exciting project and process. I am also on the Piano and Theory faculty of the TCU School of Music. I enjoy photography, so it has been great fun creating this FB page. I hope you are enjoying it as much as I am!

June 5, Thursday

Welcome to St. Monica!

All of this page has been pictures of organ parts and construction. Equal to the success of a pipe organ is the room. This should be quite the marriage of instrument and room!

St. Monica is a round room. Don't cringe - just come hear it! It was renovated in 2012. (More details on that later.) The organ is the final step in the renovation.

I'll post some before/after pictures when voicing starts and there is not much visual action occurring.

Here is a video of what it takes to get one pipe in place. Some were easier than others!

Wednesday's Progress - It's a Looker!

June 4th, Wednesday

Each day this week has been facade day - naturally, the most exciting element of the organ for the general public, as this is all that they will see.

The Colby crew went back to Tennessee this morning, as they completed their work last night. Goodbye scaffolding! N&S has been attaching the pipes to the facade.

Another exciting moment was hearing some of the stops play while they were checking the relay system.
