One of our seminarians at the North American College in Rome, Bryce Baumann, had the unique opportunity with his class to attend a private audience with his Holiness, Pope Francis this past Sunday. Pope Francis greeted each seminarian individually, and then spoke to them briefly as a group.

Our New Men and faculty were invited to greet the Holy Father in a private reception Sunday, prior to the Angelus. During their meeting in the Sala Clementina in the Apostolic Palace, Fr. Peter Harman, Rector, offered these words of introduction: "Holy Father, the new seminarians and formation faculty are grateful for this chance to greet you personally. We are your neighbors over here on the Janiculum Hill, but more so as fellow brothers in the Lord. We pray for you and your mission as the Pastor of the Universal Church. We have just returned from pilgrimage to Assisi, and there we begged the intercession of St. Francis for Pope Francis. Please pray for us, that this new year will be one of grace, health and growth always in God’s will. Ad moltos annos!" Pope Francis concluded the reception by leading the Hail Mary in English.

Seminarian Spotlight: Juan Mendez

How did you start discerning the priesthood?
"Ever since I was young, I would attend Church but it wasn't until after graduating from College that I was more involved with the Church. I remember that after work, I would go to my home parish and was involved with the different groups. The more I was at the parish, the more I enjoyed it. My home parish priest was also a good example and finally after praying about it and listening to God's invitation I finally got the courage to enter seminary."

What's something that surprised you about seminary?
"The different characteristics and gifts of my brother seminarians. It was funny and surprising to see that we are all different but have one goal in mind which is to be priests. God really does call all kinds of personalities to join his vineyard. There is not a "one" way mold to being a seminarian."
