Since 1918 Primera Iglesia Bautista Dallas-First Mexican Baptist Church Dallas

In 1906, Jews from Austria and Romania founded Anshe Sphard in the Goose Valley neighborhood. Following the Sephardic rite, the small group met in private homes initially. In 1913, they bought a house which they converted into a synagogue. When most of its members moved out of the neighborhood, the congregation moved to a house in south Dallas. In 1936, the 40 members of Anshe Sphard moved to a new building which had formerly housed a telephone exchange. Known informally as the Roumanishe Shul, Anshe Sphard never had a rabbi or religious school; Charles Kaufman served as lay leader of the congregation for many years. In 1956, the small congregation merged with the much larger Shearith Israel.

FOUNDATION OF PRIMERA IGLESIA BAUTISTA MEXICANA

Dallas’ connection with Mexico dates back to 1886 when a Mexican Military Band was welcomed to perform and participate in the first State Fair of Texas by Mayor John Henry Brown. The development of “Little Mexico” began in 1914. At first a few Mexican families settled here, but the numbers increased rapidly reaching a peak of 10,000 by 1920.

The area of “Little Mexico” covered about 10 city blocks extending along both sides of McKinney Avenue from Akard Street to Griffin Street, and Stand Pipe Hill on the northwest and the MKT Railroad Tracks on the southwest. The community of “Little Mexico” was surrounded by huge warehouses and towering smoke stacks of Dallas’ wholesale district. Prior to this time, this Mexican settlement was occupied by Jewish immigrants. When the Mexican immigrants arrived the Jewish immigrants moved and relocated in various areas of the city and many Jewish home owners rented their homes to the newly arrived Mexican immigrants.

The most important centers of communal life in “Little Mexico” were the Cumberland Hill School, and various churches and missions. A majority of this Hispanic Community in Dallas were of Roman-Catholic faith. However there were evangelical churches and missions. It was from one of these missions that Primera Iglesia Bautista was established. The loyal members of this mission church held services in members’ homes and at times occupied an empty warehouse space in what is now the West End. The mission received support and direction from Highland Park Baptist Church and Dallas Baptist Association. It was during the final days supported church.

On November 18, 1918, under the direction of Reverend Andres Moye, the past president of the Mexican Baptist Convention of Texas, and the founding members of the church formally organized Primera Iglesia Bautista. The founding members involved were Deacons Mateo Barron, Simon Herrrera, Catarino Calderon, Dario Herrera, Adan Aldape, and Natividad Pachecano. Under the guidance and direction of the Dallas Baptist Association and Highland Park Baptist Church Primera Iglesia Bautista purchased and occupied an official church building site. The building was located on Alamo Street at Griffin Street, near downtown Dallas and in the middle of the Mexican community. The building was the previous site of a Jewish Synagogue. There is a story associated with this choice site. It seems the previous members of the synagogue were not going to allow the Mexican members of the newly organized church to occupy the site. They put locks and chains on the doors, trying to discourage the members of this new church, but the members of the newly formed church would not be discouraged so they proceeded to break the chains and locks and took possession of the beloved new church site.

My grandfather, Eliseo Rodriguez and deacon Natividad Pachecano were among the men who helped remove the locks and opened the doors to the new church site. The church members called it’s first official pastor, Reverend Ernesto Sepulveda.
