Taking a Breather

There are times in your family's life where everything goes just as you planned, and that's really fun. Our parention is to have that happen as often as possible, right? And there are moments when your family is thrown a major curve ball and you have to step back, take a deep breath, then get back in the box and be ready to go. [ 86 more words ]

Our kids are always moving, always making decisions. Hopefully, most of those decisions are good ones. Honestly, there are days where my kids chose poorly more often than not. Do we address everything? That would be so very exhausting for both me and my kids. Some days we have the energy and time to address each negative behavior. But again, most days that is not the case. Build the Foundation

We are foundational builders. It’s hard work at times building something that is supposed to hold up fears, emotions, life changes, spiritual battles, etc. Yet it’s the most important part of a building. I drive by sky scraper new construction downtown and see how deep they are setting the foundation! The bigger the building, the deeper and stronger the foundation. We want our kids to grow very high in every area. [ 104 more words ]

Scripture to Remember

As a child, I remember memorizing Bible verses for church. It was a vital part of my spiritual growth early on and I also went on a few summer mission trips in high school where Scripture memory was part of our daily routine. These verses come back to me often and it’s a wonderful gift for me and sometimes those around me in that situation. [ 184 more words ]

Continue to seek guidance and wisdom

I'm realizing over the years that I'm still learning as a parent each new year. Each new year, I've had to learn how to raise a child that age. This seems so elementary, but it's the challenges each year that remind me I've never done this before. It has been fruitful for me to spend as much time as I could with parents of kids a step ahead of ours so I could at least be somewhat aware of what was coming. [ 56 more words ]

REPOST: A Sweet Aroma

As believing parents, we are to present the message of God's love to our children. It is not our job to "get them saved," but simply to preach. The Holy Spirit will go before us. He is the convictor of sin. As parents, it is our job to create an environment where the Holy Spirit can work. We must also be a team in parenting. [ 44 more words ]

When do I get my child a phone?

When is the right time to let your child have a phone? Isn’t that the million-dollar parenting question! As in anything, you are your child’s expert and only you know the answer to that. However, whenever that moment arrives, it’s great to be fully aware and help your child know the proper boundaries. Here is a great article to look over as you prepare for this decision or a great reminder if your child already has a phone. Psalm 19:14

In our early years of marriage, it seemed like we had all the time in the world. Even during Lydia’s first few years of life, it was busy at times during the day, but overall it seemed like I had plenty of time to have a quiet time in the morning, spend time before work with everyone and had to come up with things to do to pass the time between dinner and… [ 174 more words ]

Truth Pointers

Our role as parents is to be truth pointers. Point our kids to the truth in Jesus and the Bible. We are not truthful ourselves, for we are sinners. The biggest thing we can do for our kids is to point them to Jesus and explain it is He who gives us truth to live by. Jesus in us is living truth, not ourselves. 50 more words [ 48 more words ]

Unplug and be in the Moment!

I have been convicted this week about our family conversations. I’ve written about this before, but the cellphone gets way more face time than our own kids. I need to do a better job completely putting away my phone when my kids want to talk. I want to catch that little glance at the basketball score in between the exchanging of looks between Dad and Mom. [ 105 more words ]

Daily prayers for our kids

I stumbled across this great devotional for parents. I know there are lots of good ones out there, and it’s already mid-February, but anytime can be the best time to start. I sometimes struggle on what exactly to pray for my kids and wonder if praying the same thing twenty days in a row is even ok. Parenting is a marathon, not a sprint!

Part of our job as parents is to set our kids up for success. Our goal is not for them to be successful, but rather equip them with the tools they need to be successful on their own with the Lord’s help. My parention has been to do everything I can to see them succeed as early and as often as possible. [ 130 more words ]

One of the hardest things for me as a parent these days is to listen to my kid’s 30 minute drawn out story that can be told in 30 seconds. I don’t need every detail about what her friend said before what she said or what he did to so-and-so right after you did so-and-so. I know we are to cherish these moments together but at 9:30pm, I’m ready to turn it off for the night. [ 137 more words ]

Children Thrive with Consistency

Felicia and Corban are taking our dogs through a dog training course once a week. It’s not only a great bonding time for them, but Corban is learning the value of consistent training. Loving through Obeying

We want to teach our kids to obey. We also want to teach them to love others. These are more closely connected than we think. If you love someone, you will obey them. If you obey, you show your love. My prayers have been a bit more focused this week and it’s been a rare week in which each of us have prayed together as a family for ourselves and for others. Always pray, Be joyful, then Thank Him

One of the biggest questions in our house right now is, “What are you going to do with your life?” With our oldest a few months away from graduating high school and the other one closely watching, the question we asked when they were little (What do you want to be when you grow up?) is becoming more of a pressing reality!
