From the Killing Field, To the Mission Field

This page is to build awareness of the mission to bring the Good News of Jesus Christ to such a poverty-stricken nation

The purpose of Sokhom Hun’s Cambodia Ministry is to bring the Good News of Jesus Christ to the precious, poverty-stricken people of Cambodia. Many people are being saved by Jesus Christ as the Lord works through Sokhom in local evangelism, medical mission trips that show the love of God in action, and the Cambodia Bible School (a new preacher training school located in Phnom Penh, Cambodia).

Mission: To help the people of Cambodia with their health & spiritual well being.

The Next Best Thing to Speaking in Tongues!

The Next Best Thing to Speaking in Tongues! As they say in Cambodia: “Howdy”,

Everything continues to go well in Phnom Penh. The three day seminar ended with some of the 35 men sharing what they learned, and how they benefitted from being at the Cambodia Bible School (CBS). The last lesson was entitled: “Five Traits of an Effective Servant of the Lord”. We dealt with issues like: stay close to the cross in your personal life and in the thrust of your ministry, love people like Jesus did, be humble so God can use you (God made something out of nothing, and if we confess we are nothing God will make something of us), etc. Dr. Yinh sat in on much of the seminar when he was not tending to patients. During breaks he would medically treat any who had ailments. He put the cherry on top of the dessert in the seminar when he said, “I have learned I need to be more humble and grow every day in my faith – I need to serve God more”. Here is a former atheist, communist doctor from Vietnam who gave his life to Jesus when he was baptized January 7, 2010 (Cambodia Independence Day). He gives away much of his medical treatment, travels with Sokhom so he can help people in the villages physically while Sokhom helps them spiritually, and serves in any way he can in the church. It caused everyone in the room to do some serious examination of their own spiritual life.

Teaching the 15 preaching students at CBS is a rewarding experience. The guys are hungry to grow in their relationship with Jesus Christ and learn God’s word so they can help people in their villages in the future. They have tons of questions as they try to sort things out from their past with Islam and Buddhism. Sopa is a former Buddhist who comes from a village made up of mostly Muslims. There is a lot of superstitious beliefs in the evil spirits – lots of voodoo by both Muslims and Buddhists. He asked question after question about the spiritual realm and the presence and power of the devil and his demons. He is growing to trust Jesus and His power to keep him safe. Sokhom asked him after the barrage of questions/answers if he was still afraid of the evil spirits; he said, “NO MORE”!

Having Sokhom translate for me is the next best thing to tongue speaking J. Stick that in your pipe and smoke it :D (old Norwegian, Polish, German, or Bill/Rosie Meierhofer saying…I got it from somewhere when I was a kid :-). Lots of smiley faces today :D.

In Christ,

Mike

First Day in Cambodia!

First Day in Cambodia!

It was a long flight (25 hours) because of a delayed flight out of Seoul. It was no biggie though…it is better than swimming over here.

Today we began a 3 day seminar with the 15 student preachers and the 20 new preachers from around the country (mostly Vietnam border). I am teaching Colossians for 3 days - then onto Ephesians and Philippians with the students. The class has a lot of questions so we have been studying some on prayer, grace, faith, baptism, etc. It is a blast. There is one guy who has asked several questions. He told us he is the leader in an area where there are 100 newly formed house churches (5-40 people in each church) who would love for us to come there to help share the Good News. All these people have left Buddhism in search of the Lord. They know very little of anything but are seeking Jesus diligently. (This is the Prey Veng province where the man lives who has the tumors all over his body.) The guy loves our Biblical emphasis taught in love. Sokhom is trying to figure out how we can get there to help. Wow! This place never ceases to amaze me. God is doing some unbelievable things here. This is like living in the book of Acts!

I have internet services all the time here in Phnom Penh.

Have a great day in the Lord.

[04/24/12]   Mike and Sokhom are having a blast sharing the Good News of Jesus Christ with 15 preaching students from the Cambodia Bible School and 20 new preachers near the Vietnam border where they serve about 90-100 house churches. Mike runs in the morning with a 4’ long stick to fight off the 600 dogs he sees along the route. I'm posting some updates that he's been sending me and will continue to post as quickly as I can. Be sure to share the messages with your families and friends!

In Him
