Ephesians 4:31
“Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice.”

This past Tuesday, we witnessed again the tragic effects of racism and hate carried out to their full, logical end. In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus explained that to even insult another is to violate the sixth commandment, prohibiting murder (Matthew 5:21-22). We grieve with the families of the victims of this tragic event. We stand with our Asian brothers and sisters in our church and throughout the United States as they withstand racist attacks in both word and deed. And we stand against the malicious slander of God's image-bearers in the AAPI community. - @thebishprt @lakewoodfellowship

So Jesus said again, “I assure you: I am the door of the sheep. All who came before Me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep didn’t listen to them. I am the door. If anyone enters by Me, he will be saved and will come in and go out and find pasture. A thief comes only to steal and to kill and to destroy. I have come so that they may have life and have it in abundance.” - John 10:7-10

We continue our I AM series tomorrow at 10am! Please join us @whiterockymca for an outdoor, socially distanced service. #lakewoodfellowship

An American investigative journalist, educator, and early civil rights leader, Ida B. Wells-Barnett was one of the founders of the NAACP. Wells was born into a life of enslavement and freed by the Emancipation Proclamation. Wells is famously known for her anti-lynching work for which she traveled extensively. In America and Great Britain, she brought to light the evil atrocities committed by whites in the South to stem Black progress. Continuous threats on her life spurred her move from Memphis to Chicago where she married Ferdinand L. Barnett who was also a journalist and activist. When the local Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) did not allow Black members, Wells and her husband along with their Bible study group, founded the Negro Fellowship League in 1908.
Wells, who cared deeply about equal education rights in addition to equal rights for women, is credited with blocking Chicago's adoption of a segregated school system. She often found herself at odds with leading white voices in the suffragist movement because of Wells' stance on violence, racism and white supremacy. Just last year, Ida B. Wells was posthumously honored with a Pulitzer Prize special citation "for her outstanding and courageous reporting on the horrific and vicious violence against African Americans during the era of lynching".

We thank God for Ida B. Wells-Barnett and the good work displayed through her.

W.E. B. Dubois was a sociologist, social activist, historian, author, and co-founder of the NAACP. His work was instrumental in the formation of the Civil Rights Movement and he is arguably the most prominent Black activist of the early 20th century. His book "The Souls of Black Folk" is still very well known. Du Bois resisted the white supremacist ideology that whiteness was bibically sacred and Blackness was evil. He believed such views allowed and encouraged the subjugation and violent treatment of Black people in the name of Christ. Du Bois believed the church should be transformative in uplifting, socially, racially and economically, those in need. His book, The Negro Church, was the first major sociological study of the church based on empirical data.

We thank God for W. E. B. DuBois and the good work displayed through him. #blackhistorymonth #lakewoodfellowship
