Street Newspaper distributed by homeless and impoverished citizens of Dallas.
Focused on homeless and poverty issues, STREETZine gives the vendor an opportunity to develop advocacy and awareness through their paper distribution, which helps people understand the issues and the personal stories of those on the lowest rung of the economic ladder. Supporters and readers from every socio-economic level are able to and do make a difference in the lives of the vendors.
STREETZine is a Community Ministries Program of The Stewpot of First Presbyterian Church in Dallas, Texas.
Mission: To develop advocacy and awareness of homeless and poverty issues while offering those in need a hand up, not a hand out.
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of longtime friend of The Stewpot Pat Spradley. Pat’s relationship with The Stewpot began in 2006 where she worked as a full-time staff member in the Development Office and assisted with the Community Voice Mail program. She retired in 2015, but continued to work as the primary editor of the STREETZine newspaper. Pat was a passionate person who cared deeply for the homeless community and served as a dedicated advocate for both the paper and The Stewpot. She will be greatly missed. Information about Pat Spradley’s legacy and her funeral services can be found here: https://www.tributes.com/condolences/view_memories/108205126#168504039

The way this is written seems problematic for a number of reasons. The point of view of the homeless folks is not presented. The idea that homelessness is synonymous with criminality/danger to the public is taken as a given, while it is in fact not true. Nowhere is the idea that this man made problem can be addressed through housing even mentioned.

“One woman recalled how, at four months pregnant, she had reported a money order scam to her local sheriff’s office only to discover that she had a warrant; she was arrested on the spot. A radiologist had sued her over a $230 bill, and she had missed one hearing too many. Another woman said she watched, a decade ago, as a deputy came to the door for her diabetic aunt and took her to jail in her final years of life. Now here she was, dealing with her own debt, trying to head off the same fate.”
