Street Newspaper distributed by homeless and impoverished citizens of Dallas.

Focused on homeless and poverty issues, STREETZine gives the vendor an opportunity to develop advocacy and awareness through their paper distribution, which helps people understand the issues and the personal stories of those on the lowest rung of the economic ladder. Supporters and readers from every socio-economic level are able to and do make a difference in the lives of the vendors.

STREETZine is a Community Ministries Program of The Stewpot of First Presbyterian Church in Dallas, Texas.

Mission: To develop advocacy and awareness of homeless and poverty issues while offering those in need a hand up, not a hand out.

Condolences for Patricia Sue (Wilson) Spradley -

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of longtime friend of The Stewpot Pat Spradley. Pat’s relationship with The Stewpot began in 2006 where she worked as a full-time staff member in the Development Office and assisted with the Community Voice Mail program. She retired in 2015, but continued to work as the primary editor of the STREETZine newspaper. Pat was a passionate person who cared deeply for the homeless community and served as a dedicated advocate for both the paper and The Stewpot. She will be greatly missed. Information about Pat Spradley’s legacy and her funeral services can be found here: is the premier resource for online obituaries, local obituaries news, celebrity obituary news and online tributes celebrating the life and death of loved ones and providing support during times of loss and grieving.

Stereotype #2: Homeless people should just get a job — THE HUMAN IMPACT It can be hard not to ask this question when we come across people sitting on sidewalks and under highways in the middle of the day. The way this is written seems problematic for a number of reasons. The point of view of the homeless folks is not presented. The idea that homelessness is synonymous with criminality/danger to the public is taken as a given, while it is in fact not true. Nowhere is the idea that this man made problem can be addressed through housing even mentioned.

General information

STREETZine has offered financial opportunity to homeless and economically disadvantaged individuals in Dallas, Texas since 2003. Vendors pay 25¢ for each paper, asking readers for a suggested donation of $1.00 and keep 100% the donations he or she receives. New vendors receive 10 free copies of the paper to get them started. For the vendor, the paper offers a positive experience of self-help that breaks through the isolation that many homeless people experience. The vendors are able to become independent and/or self-sufficient with their proceeds from the paper by purchasing bus passes and food or necessary living expenses. It also gives them opportunity for expression by publishing their articles, poems and artwork.
