GRATEFUL AND HONORED. . Friends, I am grateful and honored that you have asked me to help lead the musical expression of the faith, hopes, fears, and joys of the Central Lutheran congregation. . I should wait a while before I let you know about my quirky interests - let you find out as we go. However, I have a fascination with the way architecture forms lines and spaces. I love the architecture of Central Lutheran. The other day I was practicing the organ and needed a rest. Don't tell anyone, but the pews are very comfortable for stretching out and relaxing one's shoulders. I saw the lines and shapes of the building looking straight up as I'm sure few of us ever do. I decided to share this picture as an expression of my growing fondness for this place -- and its people. My posts here will be about YOU, not the lines and spaces after this, but this will serve as a self-introduction. I am honored to be among you, and I trust our work together will help us "draw near with confidence to the throne of grace" (Hebrews 4:16). Harold . . .
Doing such great work!!
Such joy in returning to this church this morning.
The Christmas season has begun, and Central Lutheran started the advent season with a nativity scene and Christmas carols! Join us!
Thanks, Scouts, for filling the cracks--and thanks to Nancy and Larry Anglin, Ted and the Council, for seeing this through!
Central friends: I filled the little library after church yesterday, both shelves were full. Today when I stopped by church, there was not a single book inside. If you have any to spare, please drop them by.

So, while you are staying safe at home, let the creativity begin!

Community update - several of our local stores have modified schedules to help those who are most at risk to shop early, when the store is the cleanest and least crowded. Those who are 60+, pregnant & other "at risk" can shop at:

Kroger - Tues & Thurs 6:00am-7:30am
Tom Thumb - also Tues & Thurs 7:00am-9:00am
Target - Wed 8:00am-9:00am
Walmart -Tues 7:00am - 8:00am

Most of these stores also have free pick up available so you can go to the store website to shop and pay. You schedule a time to pick up your groceries and they have a designated place for you to park and they will bring your groceries to your car. Many also have delivery available.

As always, if you have any need and are not able or comfortable to get to the store, contact the church office or Pastor Truhan for help. We have congregation volunteers who can help get supplies to you. (if you'd like to be one of those volunteers, contact Pr Truhan or the church office)

centrallutheran.org   LENT MIDWEEK COMPLINE Dialogue P: It is good [...]

[03/18/20]   For this evening's Lenten devotion...

P: It is good to give thanks to the Lord,
A: to sing praise to your name, O Most High;
P: to herald your love in the morning,
A: your truth at the close of the day.

P: Let us confess our sin in the presence of God and of one another.
Holy and gracious God,

A: I confess that I have sinned against you this day.
Some of my sin I know—
the thoughts and words and deeds
of which I am ashamed—
but some is known only to you.
In the name of Jesus Christ I ask forgiveness.
Deliver and restore me,
that I may rest in peace.

P: By the mercy of God
we are united with Jesus Christ,
in whom we are forgiven.
We rest now in the peace of Christ
and rise in the morning to serveP.

P: Into your hands, O Lord, I commend my spirit.
A: Into your hands I commend my spirit.
P: You have redeemed me, O Lord, God of truth.
A: Into your hands I commend my spirit.
P: Glory to the Father, to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.
A: Into your hands, I commend my spirit.

Guide us waking, O Lord,
and guard us sleeping;
that awake we may watch with Christ
and asleep may rest in peace.
Now, Lord, you let your servant go in peace:
your word has been fulfilled.
My own eyes have seen the salvation
which you have prepared in the sight of ev'ry people:
a light to reveal you to the nations
and the glory of your people Israel.
Guide us waking, O Lord,
and guard us sleeping;
that awake we may watch with Christ
and asleep we may rest in peace.

Hear my prayer, O Lord;
listen to my cry.
Keep me as the apple of your eye;
hide me in the shadow of your wings.
In righteousness I shall see you;
when I awake, your presence will give me joy.

O Lord, support us all the day long of this troubled life, until the shadows lengthen and the evening comes and the busy world is hushed, the fever of life is over, and our work is done. Then, in your mercy, grant us a safe lodging, and a holy rest, and peace at the last, through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Keep watch, dear Lord, with those who work or watch or weep this night, and give your angels charge over those who sleep. Tend the sick, give rest to the weary, bless the dying, soothe the suffering, comfort the afflicted, shield the joyous; and all for your love’s sake.

Eternal God, the hours both of day and night are yours, and to you the darkness is no threat. Be present, we pray, with those who labor in these hours of night, especially those who watch and work on behalf of others. Grant them diligence in their watching, faithfulness in their service, courage in danger, and competence in emergencies. Help them to meet the needs of others with confidence and compassion; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name,
thy kingdom come,
thy will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread;
and forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those
who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom,
and the power, and the glory,
forever and ever. Amen.

P: Let us bless the Lord
A: Thanks be to God.

P: Almighty and merciful God, Father, ☩ Son, and Holy Spirit,
bless, preserve, and keep us, this night and forevermore.
A: Amen.

One more of the hymns that my mind was holding onto today.

Great is Thy faithfulness, O God my Father,
There is no shadow of turning with Thee;
Thou changest not, Thy compassions, they fail not
As Thou hast been Thou forever wilt be.
Great is Thy faithfulness! Great is Thy faithfulness!
Morning by morning new mercies I see;
All I have needed Thy hand hath provided—
Great is Thy faithfulness, Lord, unto me!

Summer and winter, and springtime and harvest,
Sun, moon and stars in their courses above,
Join with all nature in manifold witness
To Thy great faithfulness, mercy and love.

Pardon for sin and a peace that endureth,
Thine own dear presence to cheer and to guide;
Strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow,
Blessings all mine, with ten thousand beside!

Words: Thomas O. Chisholm (1866-1960)
Music: William M. Ryan (1870-1957)

While we do not yet know the extent to which we will be in physical isolation, we still share in our faith and common hope.
May this resource be a blessing to you and your family. And may the duration of which we delay our in-person gatherings be brief!

The Spirit is a wild thing.

We are trying to figure out life & how to be the church during the COVID-19 pandemic.

A group of ELCA Clergy & Youth Leaders listened to the Spirit and have created Pandemic Hope, an 8-week family devotional for life during COVID-19.

LBW 364

Son of God, eternal Savior, source of life and truth and grace,
Word made flesh, whose birth among us hallows all our human race,
You, our Head, who, throned in glory, for your own will ever plead,
fill us with your love and pity; heal our wrongs, and help our need.

As you, Lord, have lived for others, so may we for others live;
freely have your gifts been granted, freely may your servants give:
yours the gold and yours the silver, yours the wealth of land and sea,
we but stewards of your bounty, held in solemn trust will be.

Son of God, eternal savior, source of life and truth and grace,
Word made flesh, whose birth among us hallows all our human race,
By your praying, by your willing that your people should be one,
Grant, O grant our hope's fruition: here on earth your will be done.
Words: Somerset C. Lowry (1855-1932)
Music: 18th century Dutch folk tune

Brothers & Sisters in Christ
Bishop Eaton recently shared that Martin Luther encouraged his community during a health crisis. He emphasized our duty to care for our neighbors, the responsibility of government to protect and provide services for its citizens, caution about recklessness, and the importance of science, medicine and common sense.

With concerns over the COVID-19 virus and government and CDC recommendations to limit group gatherings, we’ve come to the difficult decision to not gather for in-person worship services for the next two weeks (March 15th and 22nd). This includes Sunday mornings and Wednesday evenings. We will see how things are going and decide later about March 29.

Pastor Truhan is currently working on some on-line devotions and we will let you know when that is available and how/where to find them. We continue to plan and prepare for events this spring and summer such as the Fish Fry & Bingo night, Holy Week and Easter services, resuming first Saturday cook-outs in May, VBS, etc. While we have current stress and upheaval to our regular routines, we have faith that this will pass and we will quickly return to our usual activities.

Safe travels to those going on Spring Break! Wash your hands often and we will get through this challenge together!
