Deaf Christians often struggle to hear God's word, but some find meaning in the richness of who they are

A new article on our Deaf Theology page explores the cultural dimensions of being Deaf and proclaiming the Good News of the Gospel: Jana Bennett, "Deaf Christians often struggle to hear God's word, but some find meaning in the richness of who they are"

HLAA Rings in the New Year in a Partnership with American Girl to Increase Education and Awareness of Hearing Loss

American Girl donated $25,000 to support Hearing Loss Association of America in honor of its 2020 Girl of the Year, Joss Kendrick. American Girl is also supporting the organization’s 2020 Walk4Hearing with a donation of Joss dolls. And, from January 1, 2020, through the end of the year, the company will collect donations for HLAA at americangirl.com and at American Girl stores nationwide.

“What could be more exciting than to have an American Girl doll be a role model for girls with hearing loss?” said HLAA Executive Director Barbara Kelley. “HLAA is proud to partner with American Girl to help girls know that, like Joss, they can be and do anything—an empowering message for girls with or without hearing loss. I hope girls who read Joss’s inspiring story will help create awareness about hearing loss among their friends and family.”

Our Story

At the 2000 General Conference of the United Methodist Church, delegates from across our denomination accepted a recommendation from the General Board of Global Ministries’ Health and Welfare Unit to create a national steering committee to promote ministries with and for those who are Deaf, Hard of Hearing, Late Deafened and Deaf-Blind. Now called the United Methodist Committee on Deaf and Hard of Hearing Ministries, we seek to continue our mission to make [Deaf] disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.

General information

In 1992, the General Conference of the United Methodist Church established the National Committee on Deaf Ministries as a mission initiative (renewed at the 1996 and 2000 General Conferences.) As its mission expanded to include all people with hearing loss, the committee broadened its name to reflect the diversity of the population it represents. It is now known as the United Methodist Committee on Deaf and Hard of Hearing Ministries or DHM. Ten members make up the Committee as follows: two people who are Deaf, two late-deafened, two hard of hearing, one deaf-blind person, as well as one deaf institutional ministry professional, and two clergy with experience in ministry with people who are Deaf, late-deafened, hard of hearing, and deaf-blind. The Committee strives to be inclusive with regard to gender, ethnicity, jurisdiction, and different sign language and hearing abilities.
