Is there any way, Voces Intimae, you could share the below with your membership/network? Dear fellow Teutophiles, Please allow me to introduce myself. My name is Garland Hancock. I serve as a regional coordinator for Academic Year in America (AYA), a nonprofit foreign-exchange organization sponsored by the U.S. State Department. I am a matchmaker of sorts. I create meaningful relationships by connecting Host Families with foreign-exchange students, most of whom are from Germany. With school beginning in about three to five weeks, I still have nearly 50 German students – ages 15-17 -- in need of homes. Many of the Host Families that AYA secured for these kids back during the spring have recently encountered 11th-hour circumstances that preclude them from hosting. So with VISAs secured, bags packed and excitement that once ran high, these kids are back to square one. They are in limbo, teetering on the possibility of not realizing their dreams of studying in America. Which is why I am writing you today. If you have ever thought about hosting or are just a wee bit intrigued by this letter, please give me a call TODAY or ASAP. I am sure you have questions, and I will be happy to answer each and every one. My number is (254) 216-0460. Of course, time is of the essence. Most campuses limit the number of foreign-exchange students they accept to five. And that means slots are, in many cases, becoming very scarce. Which is to say I am hoping to find families by THIS WEEK so please call 24/7 even if only interested in becoming a “Welcome Family” – i.e. a temporary host for 1-3 weeks. After 20 years, my work in cultural exchange remains the most rewarding thing I have ever done. The resultant relationships alone provide much more than I could ever repay. And what better way to expand your cultural horizons? But beyond that, I truly believe – as does the State Department – that America's foreign-exchange program plays an integral role in improving diplomatic relations and establishing a more close-knit global community. And is that not, after all, what we all want? Everlasting peace, Garland Hancock Regional Coordinator, Academic Year in America www.academicyear.org / (254) 216-0460

A Modern Reveal

🎈 Happy Birthday to French composer and the first female recipient of the Prix de Rome, Lili Boulanger, born #onthisday in 1893!

Boulanger was born into a musical family. Her father was a voice instructor at the Paris Conservatoire and her mother was a singer. Her older sister, Nadia, became a famous composition teacher who notably influenced many American composers. Their family lived surrounded by a sophisticated, rich musical circle of intellectuals.

From 1908-1918 Lili composed 50 works: choral, chorus and orchestra, cantatas, piano, orchestral, and chamber music. In 1913 Boulanger was the first woman to win the Prix de Rome with her cantata, Faust et Helene. As a result of this win, she was offered a contract with Ricordi Publishing.

Plagued with chronic illness for her whole life, Boulanger's health steadily deteriorated throughout her career and she died at the young age of 24.

After the war, the arts came back stronger. They can do so again now | Charlotte Higgins

"On the heels of the Arts Council in 1946 came the great arts festivals – Edinburgh in 1947, Aldeburgh in 1948. Then came the Festival of Britain and the Royal Festival Hall in 1951. Inventing something undreamed of, something even better than what existed before: that might be the true arts recovery plan, and a political legacy worth having.”

Voces Intimae

The COVID-19 pandemic has halted Voces Intimae's activities in an unprecedented way. We will miss entertaining you this spring with the concerts Musings, featuring Voces Intimae's Artistic Director Kay George and Heeyoung Choi, and The Juliet Letters, featuring Mark Landson and the Neo Camerata. We are also saddened that we have had to postpone our fundraiser An American Art Song, featuring Blake Davidson of The Tenors of Comedy and Pianist Erik Barnes. Canceling such a large percentage of our season has hurt Voces Intimae financially. Your contribution – in any amount – will give Voces Intimae encouragement and emergency funds that are vital to the life of our organization.

We humbly thank you for contributing to Voces Intimae on this special day of giving!
