Texas Baptist Christian Life Commission

The CLC speaks to and with Texas Baptists on ethical, community ministry, and public policy issues.

The work of the CLC can be divided into several areas, each with its own specific mission and goals. - Public Policy -Texas Baptist Hunger Offering -Community Ministry -Ethics and Justice -Immigration Service and Aid Center

Mission: Since 1950, the Christian Life Commission has served as the ethics agency of the Baptist General Convention of Texas. The CLC has the assignment of speaking to and with churches and individuals about important ethical issues. Christian ethicist and seminary professor T.B. Maston, and other Texas Baptists who were instrumental in establishing the CLC, determined that helping Baptists deal with critical modern issues was an inherently prophetic assignment. Because of that historic role, the CLC has been given the mandate of speaking to critical issues on the basis of the gospel. Some of these issue areas include: citizenship and public policy, family life, religious liberty, ethnic reconciliation, faith in the workplace, hunger and poverty, substance abuse, environmental justice and creation care, war and peace, gambling, bioethics -- and many more. The Christian Life Commission is active in the Texas legislature on matters of public policy as designated by CLC Commission members. The Commission is a diverse body made up of both pastors and lay members of Texas Baptist churches throughout the state. Commission members prayerfully consider scripture, Christian ethics, biblical values of justice and care for the "least of these" as well as practical realities of modern life when formulating positions. CLC staff in Austin then advocates for these policies and facilitates and encourages active participation in the process by Texas Baptists. The CLC is committed to ensuring that Texas Baptist churches, pastors and lay people have access to accurate, non-partisan information and are well informed about the legislative process in Austin.

Yesterday we celebrated Ferrell Foster, CLC Associate Director and Director of Ethics and Justice. Ferrell is retiring from his work with Texas Baptists. He has been a servant leader for nearly 20 years serving in numerous roles. Words cannot express our love and thankfulness for Ferrell and his ministry. We will miss him dearly but also celebrate with him and look forward to seeing what adventures are still ahead!

It was a blessing to join with more than 20,000 people at the Texas Capitol today to stand for life.

As our Texas Baptists’ President Michael Evans said during the closing prayer, “Lives are being saved, laws are being changed and the sanctity of life is being upheld.”

Let us go forward and continue to make a difference.

The Christian Life Commission members and staff honored Marilyn Sefton Davis last week for 40 years as a CLC employee. She began working with the CLC in 1970 (very, very young), and took some time away while her children were young. Her total years of service add to 40 -- amazing!. She has served four CLC directors -- James Dunn, Phil Strickland, Suzii Paynter, and Gus L. Reyes. More accurately, she has served all Texas Baptists.
