Give us the gift of hope as we face worldly governments. Lord, we give You permission to form our consciences according to the Gospel so that we may vote and, more importantly, act for the Kingdom of God. As we wrestle with the complexity of political life, let us never forget the dignity of every person made in Your image - the unborn, the poor, the vulnerable, the refugee, those affected by war and those suffering from the failings of the political systems of this world. Lord, we pray for our political opponents - that we may love them as You love them. Help us remember that political power can never replace the mission of the Church to preach the Gospel to all nations. Give us the courage to always be detached from our political loyalties and be first a faithful follower of Jesus, the true King. And when it comes time for us to contribute to the political realm help us to cast our vote in a way that is pleasing to You. For this election, O God, please bless us with the best rulers possible, in this fallen world, at all levels of government. Finally, just as You brought our salvation from the horrible death of Your Son, we pray that from the political campaigns of this world, You will bring about great good for Your people. In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen

Good morning, Cathedral family!!!!!!
I have a question to ask one of our priests or deacons.

I spoke to one of my good friends this evening and she asked me if she lays down things that she wants blessed during Sunday’s mass will those items be blessed once Bishop Burns gives the final blessing.
This really breaks my heartπŸ’”πŸ˜’πŸ’” Let’s all pray to our Lord Savior so he’s the one who can put an end to this health crisis.

Over the past year, informed Catholics and Christians in the West have watched helplessly as the Communist government in China has cracked down harder and harder on our Chinese brothers and sisters in Christ. Of course, the Church has been persecuted in China for decades. But, these latest attempts to squelch the independence of the Church are coming in spite of the recent agreement the Vatican signed with China’s communist government. Or, could it be, as some suggest, that the latest persecution against Chinese Christians is coming at least, in part, because of the recent agreement the Vatican signed with the communist government? Now, a letter from Cardinal Zen to the rest of the Cardinals in the world, clearly delineates his grievances with the new Sino-Vatican Agreement. It also brings new light to the questions ('Dubia') he posed to Pope Francis about the Agreement in July (but, which have, to-date, gone unanswered). One of the most striking insights the Cardinal makes about the new Sino-Vatican Agreement can be found in the second paragraph of his letter:

"From my analysis of the document of the Holy See (June 28, 2019), β€œPastoral guidelines of the Holy See concerning the civil registration of clergy in China,” it is quite clear that it encourages the faithful in China to enter a schismatic church (independent of the pope and under the orders of the Communist Party)." This is a devastating insight, and the good Cardinal, and faithful Catholics and Christians in China, now needs our support, both moral and prayerful.

This petition, therefore, both supports Cardinal Zen and his quest to stop the "murder of the Church in China," as well as Chinese Catholics and Christians as they face an intensifying crackdown. To sign the petition go to the Life Site web page.

Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint Mark 3:13-19

Jesus went up the mountain and summoned those whom he wanted
and they came to him.
He appointed Twelve, whom he also named Apostles,
that they might be with him
and he might send them forth to preach
and to have authority to drive out demons:
He appointed the Twelve:
Simon, whom he named Peter;
James, son of Zebedee,
and John the brother of James, whom he named Boanerges,
that is, sons of thunder;
Andrew, Philip, Bartholomew,
Matthew, Thomas, James the son of Alphaeus;
Thaddeus, Simon the Cananean,
and Judas Iscariot who betrayed him.

Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint Mark 3:7-12

Jesus withdrew toward the sea with his disciples.
A large number of people followed from Galilee and from Judea.
Hearing what he was doing,
a large number of people came to him also from Jerusalem,
from Idumea, from beyond the Jordan,
and from the neighborhood of Tyre and Sidon.
He told his disciples to have a boat ready for him because of the crowd,
so that they would not crush him.
He had cured many and, as a result, those who had diseases
were pressing upon him to touch him.
And whenever unclean spirits saw him they would fall down before him
and shout, β€œYou are the Son of God.”
He warned them sternly not to make him known.

Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint Mark 3:1-6

Jesus entered the synagogue.
There was a man there who had a withered hand.
They watched Jesus closely
to see if he would cure him on the sabbath
so that they might accuse him.
He said to the man with the withered hand,
β€œCome up here before us.”
Then he said to the Pharisees,
β€œIs it lawful to do good on the sabbath rather than to do evil,
to save life rather than to destroy it?”
But they remained silent.
Looking around at them with anger
and grieved at their hardness of heart,
Jesus said to the man, β€œStretch out your hand.”
He stretched it out and his hand was restored.
The Pharisees went out and immediately took counsel
with the Herodians against him to put him to death.

As Jesus was passing through a field of grain on the sabbath,
his disciples began to make a path while picking the heads of grain.
At this the Pharisees said to him,
β€œLook, why are they doing what is unlawful on the sabbath?”
He said to them,
β€œHave you never read what David did
when he was in need and he and his companions were hungry?
How he went into the house of God when Abiathar was high priest
and ate the bread of offering that only the priests could lawfully eat,
and shared it with his companions?”
Then he said to them,
β€œThe sabbath was made for man, not man for the sabbath.
That is why the Son of Man is lord even of the sabbath.”

The disciples of John and of the Pharisees were accustomed to fast.
People came to Jesus and objected,
β€œWhy do the disciples of John and the disciples of the Pharisees fast,
but your disciples do not fast?”
Jesus answered them,
β€œCan the wedding guests fast while the bridegroom is with them?
As long as they have the bridegroom with them they cannot fast.
But the days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them,
and then they will fast on that day.
No one sews a piece of unshrunken cloth on an old cloak.
If he does, its fullness pulls away,
the new from the old, and the tear gets worse.
Likewise, no one pours new wine into old wineskins.
Otherwise, the wine will burst the skins,
and both the wine and the skins are ruined.
Rather, new wine is poured into fresh wineskins.”

Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint John 1:35-42

John was standing with two of his disciples,
and as he watched Jesus walk by, he said,
β€œBehold, the Lamb of God.”
The two disciples heard what he said and followed Jesus.
Jesus turned and saw them following him and said to them,
β€œWhat are you looking for?”
They said to him, β€œRabbi” β€” which translated means Teacher β€”,
β€œwhere are you staying?”
He said to them, β€œCome, and you will see.”
So they went and saw where Jesus was staying,
and they stayed with him that day.
It was about four in the afternoon.
Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter,
was one of the two who heard John and followed Jesus.
He first found his own brother Simon and told him,
β€œWe have found the Messiah” β€” which is translated Christ β€”.
Then he brought him to Jesus.
Jesus looked at him and said,
β€œYou are Simon the son of John;
you will be called Cephas” β€” which is translated Peter.

Jesus said to him, β€œFollow me.”
And he got up and followed Jesus.
While he was at table in his house,
many tax collectors and sinners sat with Jesus and his disciples;
for there were many who followed him.
Some scribes who were Pharisees saw that Jesus was eating with sinners

Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint Mark 2:1-12

When Jesus returned to Capernaum after some days,
it became known that he was at home.
Many gathered together so that there was no longer room for them,
not even around the door,
and he preached the word to them.
They came bringing to him a paralytic carried by four men.
Unable to get near Jesus because of the crowd,
they opened up the roof above him.
After they had broken through,
they let down the mat on which the paralytic was lying.
When Jesus saw their faith, he said to him,
β€œChild, your sins are forgiven.”
Now some of the scribes were sitting there asking themselves,
β€œWhy does this man speak that way? He is blaspheming.
Who but God alone can forgive sins?”
Jesus immediately knew in his mind what
they were thinking to themselves,
so he said, β€œWhy are you thinking such things in your hearts?
Which is easier, to say to the paralytic,
β€˜Your sins are forgiven,’
or to say, β€˜Rise, pick up your mat and walk’?
But that you may know
that the Son of Man has authority to forgive sins on earth”
–he said to the paralytic,
β€œI say to you, rise, pick up your mat, and go home.”
He rose, picked up his mat at once,
and went away in the sight of everyone.
They were all astounded
and glorified God, saying, β€œWe have never seen anything like this.”

A leper came to him and kneeling down begged him and said,
β€œIf you wish, you can make me clean.”
Moved with pity, he stretched out his hand,
touched the leper, and said to him,
β€œI do will it. Be made clean.”
The leprosy left him immediately, and he was made clean.
Then, warning him sternly, he dismissed him at once.
Then he said to him, β€œSee that you tell no one anything,
but go, show yourself to the priest
and offer for your cleansing what Moses prescribed;
that will be proof for them.”
The man went away and began to publicize the whole matter.
He spread the report abroad
so that it was impossible for Jesus to enter a town openly.
He remained outside in deserted places,
and people kept coming to him from everywhere.

On leaving the synagogue
Jesus entered the house of Simon and Andrew with James and John.
Simon’s mother-in-law lay sick with a fever.
They immediately told him about her.
He approached, grasped her hand, and helped her up.
Then the fever left her and she waited on them.
When it was evening, after sunset,
they brought to him all who were ill or possessed by demons.
The whole town was gathered at the door.
He cured many who were sick with various diseases,
and he drove out many demons,
not permitting them to speak because they knew him.
Rising very early before dawn,
he left and went off to a deserted place, where he prayed.
Simon and those who were with him pursued him
and on finding him said, β€œEveryone is looking for you.”
He told them, β€œLet us go on to the nearby villages
that I may preach there also.
For this purpose have I come.”
So he went into their synagogues, preaching and driving out demons
throughout the whole of Galilee.

Jesus came to Capernaum with his followers,
and on the sabbath he entered the synagogue and taught.
The people were astonished at his teaching,
for he taught them as one having authority and not as the scribes.
In their synagogue was a man with an unclean spirit;
he cried out, β€œWhat have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth?
Have you come to destroy us?
I know who you are–the Holy One of God!”
Jesus rebuked him and said, β€œQuiet! Come out of him!”
The unclean spirit convulsed him and with a loud cry came out of him.
All were amazed and asked one another,
β€œWhat is this?
A new teaching with authority.
He commands even the unclean spirits and they obey him.”
His fame spread everywhere throughout the whole region of Galilee.

Repent, and believe in the Gospel.”
As he passed by the Sea of Galilee,

they were fishermen.
Jesus said to them,
β€œCome after me, and I will make you fishers of men.”
Then they left their nets and followed him.
He walked along a little farther

They too were in a boat mending their nets.
Then he called them.
So they left their father Zebedee in the boat

β€œOne mightier than I is coming after me.
I am not worthy to stoop and loosen the thongs of his sandals.

It happened in those days that Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee

On coming up out of the water he saw the heavens being torn open
and the Spirit, like a dove, descending upon him.
And a voice came from the heavens,
β€œYou are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.”
