Give us the gift of hope as we face worldly governments. Lord, we give You permission to form our consciences according to the Gospel so that we may vote and, more importantly, act for the Kingdom of God. As we wrestle with the complexity of political life, let us never forget the dignity of every person made in Your image - the unborn, the poor, the vulnerable, the refugee, those affected by war and those suffering from the failings of the political systems of this world. Lord, we pray for our political opponents - that we may love them as You love them. Help us remember that political power can never replace the mission of the Church to preach the Gospel to all nations. Give us the courage to always be detached from our political loyalties and be first a faithful follower of Jesus, the true King. And when it comes time for us to contribute to the political realm help us to cast our vote in a way that is pleasing to You. For this election, O God, please bless us with the best rulers possible, in this fallen world, at all levels of government. Finally, just as You brought our salvation from the horrible death of Your Son, we pray that from the political campaigns of this world, You will bring about great good for Your people. In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen

Good morning, Cathedral family!!!!!!
I have a question to ask one of our priests or deacons. I spoke to one of my good friends this evening and she asked me if she lays down things that she wants blessed during Sundayโ€™s mass will those items be blessed once Bishop Burns gives the final blessing.
This really breaks my heart๐Ÿ’”๐Ÿ˜ข๐Ÿ’” Letโ€™s all pray to our Lord Savior so heโ€™s the one who can put an end to this health crisis.

Over the past year, informed Catholics and Christians in the West have watched helplessly as the Communist government in China has cracked down harder and harder on our Chinese brothers and sisters in Christ. Of course, the Church has been persecuted in China for decades. But, these latest attempts to squelch the independence of the Church are coming in spite of the recent agreement the Vatican signed with Chinaโ€™s communist government. Or, could it be, as some suggest, that the latest persecution against Chinese Christians is coming at least, in part, because of the recent agreement the Vatican signed with the communist government? Now, a letter from Cardinal Zen to the rest of the Cardinals in the world, clearly delineates his grievances with the new Sino-Vatican Agreement. It also brings new light to the questions ('Dubia') he posed to Pope Francis about the Agreement in July (but, which have, to-date, gone unanswered). One of the most striking insights the Cardinal makes about the new Sino-Vatican Agreement can be found in the second paragraph of his letter: "From my analysis of the document of the Holy See (June 28, 2019), โ€œPastoral guidelines of the Holy See concerning the civil registration of clergy in China,โ€ it is quite clear that it encourages the faithful in China to enter a schismatic church (independent of the pope and under the orders of the Communist Party)." This is a devastating insight, and the good Cardinal, and faithful Catholics and Christians in China, now needs our support, both moral and prayerful. This petition, therefore, both supports Cardinal Zen and his quest to stop the "murder of the Church in China," as well as Chinese Catholics and Christians as they face an intensifying crackdown. To sign the petition go to the Life Site web page.

Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint Luke 1:39-45

Mary set out in those days
and traveled to the hill country in haste
to a town of Judah,
where she entered the house of Zechariah
and greeted Elizabeth.
When Elizabeth heard Maryโ€™s greeting,
the infant leaped in her womb,
and Elizabeth, filled with the Holy Spirit,
cried out in a loud voice and said,
โ€œMost blessed are you among women,
and blessed is the fruit of your womb.
And how does this happen to me,
that the mother of my Lord should come to me?
For at the moment the sound of your greeting reached my ears,
the infant in my womb leaped for joy.
Blessed are you who believed
that what was spoken to you by the Lord
would be fulfilled.โ€

Let us pray:

In your goodness, Lord,
listen to your peopleโ€™s prayer.

As we rejoice in the coming of your Son
in flesh and blood like ours,
grant that when he comes again in glory
we may receive the gift of eternal life.

Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

Daily Gospel:

Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint Luke 1:26-38

The angel Gabriel was sent from God
to a town of Galilee called Nazareth,
to a virgin betrothed to a man named Joseph,
of the house of David,
and the virginโ€™s name was Mary.
And coming to her, he said,
โ€œHail, full of grace! The Lord is with you.โ€
But she was greatly troubled at what was said
and pondered what sort of greeting this might be.
Then the angel said to her,
โ€œDo not be afraid, Mary,
for you have found favor with God.
โ€œBehold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son,
and you shall name him Jesus.
He will be great and will be called Son of the Most High,
and the Lord God will give him the throne of David his father,
and he will rule over the house of Jacob forever,
and of his kingdom there will be no end.โ€
But Mary said to the angel,
โ€œHow can this be,
since I have no relations with a man?โ€
And the angel said to her in reply,
โ€œThe Holy Spirit will come upon you,
and the power of the Most High will overshadow you.
Therefore the child to be born
will be called holy, the Son of God.
And behold, Elizabeth, your relative,
has also conceived a son in her old age,
and this is the sixth month for her who was called barren;
for nothing will be impossible for God.โ€
Mary said, โ€œBehold, I am the handmaid of the Lord.
May it be done to me according to your word.โ€
Then the angel departed from her.

Let us pray:

Lord, open our hearts to your grace.

Through the angelโ€™s message to Mary
we have learned to believe in the incarnation of Christ your Son:
lead us by his passion and cross
to the glory of his resurrection.

Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
(one) God, for ever and ever.

Amen.

Daily Gospel:

Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint Luke 1:5-25

In the days of Herod, King of Judea,
there was a priest named Zechariah
of the priestly division of Abijah;
his wife was from the daughters of Aaron,
and her name was Elizabeth.
Both were righteous in the eyes of God,
observing all the commandments
and ordinances of the Lord blamelessly.
But they had no child, because Elizabeth was barren
and both were advanced in years.
Once when he was serving as priest
in his divisionโ€™s turn before God,
according to the practice of the priestly service,
he was chosen by lot
to enter the sanctuary of the Lord to burn incense.
Then, when the whole assembly of the people was praying outside
at the hour of the incense offering,
the angel of the Lord appeared to him,
standing at the right of the altar of incense.
Zechariah was troubled by what he saw, and fear came upon him.
But the angel said to him, โ€œDo not be afraid, Zechariah,
because your prayer has been heard.
Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son,
and you shall name him John.
And you will have joy and gladness,
and many will rejoice at his birth,
for he will be great in the sight of the Lord.
He will drink neither wine nor strong drink.
He will be filled with the Holy Spirit even from his motherโ€™s womb,
and he will turn many of the children of Israel
to the Lord their God.
He will go before him in the spirit and power of Elijah
to turn the hearts of fathers toward children
and the disobedient to the understanding of the righteous,
to prepare a people fit for the Lord.โ€
Then Zechariah said to the angel,
โ€œHow shall I know this?
For I am an old man, and my wife is advanced in years.โ€
And the angel said to him in reply,
โ€œI am Gabriel, who stand before God.
I was sent to speak to you and to announce to you this good news.
But now you will be speechless and unable to talk
until the day these things take place,
because you did not believe my words,
which will be fulfilled at their proper time.โ€
Meanwhile the people were waiting for Zechariah
and were amazed that he stayed so long in the sanctuary.
But when he came out, he was unable to speak to them,
and they realized that he had seen a vision in the sanctuary.
He was gesturing to them but remained mute.
Then, when his days of ministry were completed, he went home.
After this time his wife Elizabeth conceived,
and she went into seclusion for five months, saying,
โ€œSo has the Lord done for me at a time when he has seen fit
to take away my disgrace before others.โ€

Let us pray:

Deepen our faith, Lord God,
as we celebrate the great mystery of the incarnation
by which you revealed to the world the splendour of your glory
through the Virgin Mary
when she gave birth to your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
(one) God, for ever and ever.

Daily Gospel:

Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint Matthew 1:18-25

This is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about.
When his mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph,
but before they lived together,
she was found with child through the Holy Spirit.
Joseph her husband, since he was a righteous man,
yet unwilling to expose her to shame,
decided to divorce her quietly.
Such was his intention when, behold,
the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said,
โ€œJoseph, son of David,
do not be afraid to take Mary your wife into your home.
For it is through the Holy Spirit
that this child has been conceived in her.
She will bear a son and you are to name him Jesus,
because he will save his people from their sins.โ€
All this took place to fulfill
what the Lord had said through the prophet:
Behold, the virgin shall be with child and bear a son,
and they shall name him Emmanuel,
which means โ€œGod is with us.โ€
When Joseph awoke,
he did as the angel of the Lord had commanded him
and took his wife into his home.
He had no relations with her until she bore a son,
and he named him Jesus.

Let us pray:

By the long-awaited coming of your new-born Son
deliver us, Lord,
from the age-old bondage of sin.

Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
(one) God, for ever and ever.

Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint Luke 7:18B-23

At that time,
John summoned two of his disciples and sent them to the Lord to ask,
โ€œAre you the one who is to come, or should we look for another?โ€
When the men came to the Lord, they said,
โ€œJohn the Baptist has sent us to you to ask,
โ€˜Are you the one who is to come, or should we look for another?โ€™โ€
At that time Jesus cured many of their diseases, sufferings, and evil spirits;
he also granted sight to many who were blind.
And Jesus said to them in reply,
โ€œGo and tell John what you have seen and heard:
the blind regain their sight,
the lame walk,
lepers are cleansed,
the deaf hear, the dead are raised,
the poor have the good news proclaimed to them.
And blessed is the one who takes no offense at me.โ€

Jesus said to the chief priests and the elders of the people:
โ€œWhat is your opinion?
A man had two sons.
He came to the first and said,
โ€˜Son, go out and work in the vineyard today.โ€™
The son said in reply, โ€˜I will not,โ€™
but afterwards he changed his mind and went.
The man came to the other son and gave the same order.
He said in reply, โ€˜Yes, sir,โ€™ but did not go.
Which of the two did his fatherโ€™s will?โ€
They answered, โ€œThe first.โ€
Jesus said to them, โ€œAmen, I say to you,
tax collectors and prostitutes
are entering the Kingdom of God before you.
When John came to you in the way of righteousness,
you did not believe him;
but tax collectors and prostitutes did.
Yet even when you saw that,
you did not later change your minds and believe him.โ€

When Jesus had come into the temple area,
the chief priests and the elders of the people approached him
as he was teaching and said,
โ€œBy what authority are you doing these things?
And who gave you this authority?โ€
Jesus said to them in reply,
โ€œI shall ask you one question, and if you answer it for me,
then I shall tell you by what authority I do these things.
Where was Johnโ€™s baptism from?
Was it of heavenly or of human origin?โ€
They discussed this among themselves and said,
โ€œIf we say โ€˜Of heavenly origin,โ€™ he will say to us,
โ€˜Then why did you not believe him?โ€™
But if we say, โ€˜Of human origin,โ€™ we fear the crowd,
for they all regard John as a prophet.โ€
So they said to Jesus in reply, โ€œWe do not know.โ€
He himself said to them,
โ€œNeither shall I tell you by what authority I do these things.โ€

Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint John 1:6-8, 19-28

A man named John was sent from God.
He came for testimony, to testify to the light,
so that all might believe through him.
He was not the light,
but came to testify to the light.
And this is the testimony of John.
When the Jews from Jerusalem sent priests
and Levites to him
to ask him, โ€œWho are you?โ€
He admitted and did not deny it,
but admitted, โ€œI am not the Christ.โ€
So they asked him,
โ€œWhat are you then? Are you Elijah?โ€
And he said, โ€œI am not.โ€
โ€œAre you the Prophet?โ€
He answered, โ€œNo.โ€
So they said to him,
โ€œWho are you, so we can give an answer to those who sent us?
What do you have to say for yourself?โ€
He said:
โ€œI am the voice of one crying out in the desert,
โ€˜make straight the way of the Lord,โ€™โ€
as Isaiah the prophet said.โ€
Some Pharisees were also sent.
They asked him,
โ€œWhy then do you baptize
if you are not the Christ or Elijah or the Prophet?โ€
John answered them,
โ€œI baptize with water;
but there is one among you whom you do not recognize,
the one who is coming after me,
whose sandal strap I am not worthy to untie.โ€
This happened in Bethany across the Jordan,
where John was baptizing.
