We closed out the week of prayer for Christian Unity with worship at Holy Trinity Catholic community in Dallas. Last year we held the service at King of Glory, Dallas so this year I played an "away game" and enjoyed the hospitality of our Roman Catholic siblings.

It was a beautiful liturgy including multiple readings from the joint Lutheran-Catholic statement From Conflict to Communion. We haven't achieved communion yet. But perhaps we can brighten our collective lights.

In the morning I spent time at St. Matthew's, Fort Worth as they gave thanks for the work of their youth minister John Parsons as he is moving on. John has been a member of our Briarwood Retreat Center/Briarwood Leadership Center board and I came to thank him for that work and pray God's blessings on his future endeavors.

I made it to Trinity, Fort Worth, my congregation of membership in time for their annual meeting. Being a voting member in a congregational meeting is a privilege I pray we do not take for granted. I look forward to our NT-NL Synod, ELCA assembly at Paul Quinn College in April where again we will participate in our work and life together. #InMissionTogether #NTNL

The Department of Housing and Urban Development announced today it will release half of blocked disaster aid funding to Puerto Rico. Coalitions such as the Disaster Housing Recovery Coalition, of which the ELCA is a member, issued a statement last week urging the administration to release the congressionally mandated funding, especially as our brothers, sisters and neighbors of the Iglesia Evangélica Luterana Sinodo del Caribe - Caribbean Synod have faced deadly earthquakes this month while still moving forward with recovery after Hurricane Maria more than two years ago. We continue to encourage officials to ensure critically needed disaster aid funds reach low income families and those of us in the greatest need. On Sunday Jan 12th my family's parish Trinity Lutheran Church was visited by Avery Hawley who serves as Community Engagement Manager at Briarwood Retreat Center/Briarwood Leadership Center. She presented about summer camp and did a wonderful children's sermon. If you would like a visit from Avery this spring to encourage your families to consider summer camp please contact Briarwood

Also coming up this next weekend I am excited to host a men's service weekend at Briarwood. Dan Lund from The Church Of Damascus Road Prison Ministry will be with us to present on how we are partners in NT-NL Synod, ELCA with him in serving those incarcerated. There is still time to register. You can do so https://www.ntnl.org/2020-briarwood-mens-service-retreat/.

While at Briarwood next weekend I will also check in with the King of Glory Lutheran Church, Dallas youth who are having their discipleship weekend retreat there. Today we remember and mourn those who died in the earthquake that struck Haiti 10 years ago, including ELCA seminarian Ben Splichal Larson. A Wartburg Theological Seminary student serving in Haiti that January, Ben was inside the St. Joseph’s Home for Boys when the top two floors of the building collapsed.

In his memory, the Ben Splichal Larson Memorial Seminary Scholarship Endowment Fund was established through the ELCA Fund for Leaders. That fund has since raised about $25,000 and benefited two students. You can give to this fund here: https://community.elca.org/fundforleaders

Wow! Dallas now has the largest homeless population in Texas. "The main reason advocates give is the problem of housing affordability... There is not enough housing for the people. There is a lot of construction of rental supply, but not enough is aimed toward people that are low income."

Thursday Jan 2nd we kicked off the new year by hosting students and leaders from Trinity Lutheran Seminary (Columbus, Ohio) at Briarwood Retreat Center/Briarwood Leadership Center. These students were utilizing Briarwood as a staging place before heading to Cuernavaca, Mexico for a J-term Spanish language intensive. This is the second such group we have hosted from Trinity. The first two years ago in 2018.

They began their trip by meeting with myself and our NT-NL Synod, ELCA staff the Rev. Kris Totzke and Rev. Irma Banales. After time together for conversation and sharing the spent the afternoon and the next day visiting congregations in our Conferencia Latina NT-NL ELCA.

In this way they become better acquainted with how the spanish they are learning can be utilized. Because of our commitment in NT-NL to spanish language and bilingual worshipping communities they can visit rural, urban, and suburban communities engaged in this work within 60 miles of Briarwood. They also took advantage of some Texas culture by stopping at Whataburger.

We are grateful for this opportunity to partner with Trinity Seminary. It is part of the unique leadership development opportunities we have in NT-NL that can be a gift to the whole church. In coming years I pray this will grow and involve even more partners. Please join mr in praying for these students and leaders in their journey and ministry. #NTNL #TrinitySem #BWTX #EnMisionJuntos #InMissionTogether

PS. I forgot to mention that Jan 2nd was also take kiddos to work day as school is still out so my older 2 came along for a day of learning, reading, and playing gaga ball.

Happy Epiphany! 🎉🎆✨

Bishop Erik Gronberg

A blessed 12th night to all. Christmas festivities continued today across NT-NL Synod, ELCA. We celebrated the continuing story of God's incarnate Word made flesh. Tomorrow is Epiphany or Dia de los Tres Reyes. The celebration of the Magi.

While the world has moved on from Christmas we continue the millenia old rituals of remembering the magi from the east. In many communities the chalking of the doorposts is a traditional way of celebrating New Year and Epiphany. The year marking by crosses honoring Christ and the letters C,M,B remembering the apocryphal names of the three magi.

I pray you all had a blessed Christmas and a joyful new year. #NTNL #InMissionTogether

A prayer for peace among the nations.

Gracious God, grant peace among nations. Cleanse from our own hearts the seeds of strife: greed and envy, harsh misunderstandings and ill will, fear and desire for revenge. Make us quick to welcome ventures in cooperation among the peoples of the world, so that there may be woven the fabric of a common good too strong to be torn by the evil hands of war. In the time of opportunity, make us be diligent; and in the time of peril, let not our courage fail; through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen. Source: Evangelical Lutheran Worship

Happy 7th day of Christmas and New Year to all. I pray you all have a happy and safe evening. As we give thanks for 2019 we look forward to continuing our life #InMissionTogether in 2020.

Excited for another year of developing and connecting leaders lay and ordained in our @NT-NL Synod congregations. Our assembly in April at Paul Quinn College will be a highlight. As will ongoing leadership development at Briarwood Retreat Center/Briarwood Leadership Center.

Speaking of Briarwood we have, for many of us, come to the end of our Flexible Spending Account year at midnight. I am always grateful for healthcare and insurance that enables me to care for my family. A privilege I do not take for granted. I am also thankful for a relatively healthy year in my family that left us with a balance in that FSA account.

So I went online and ordered first aid kits I can donate to Briarwood so that those funds don't go to waste and this summer we will have plenty of supplies for our campers. I imagine our churches, schools, and other ministries could use resources that would qualify. Good stewardship is something we have and continue to encourage. Blessings to you in 2020.#NTNL #BWTX #InMissionTogether

Evangelical Lutheran Church in America

Today is the winter solstice, the year’s shortest day and longest night in the Northern Hemisphere. Christ, be our light in these final days of Advent.

Bishop Erik Gronberg

Today was a joyous day of holy obligation. Every year I make sure to get the Trinity Lutheran Church, Fort Worth children's program on my calendar. I wouldn't miss seeing my kids take part in this important event in the life of their church. Also it is a critical time for me to have them proclaim the Advent/Christmas story to me and the community.

Across NT-NL Synod, ELCA programs like this are taking place. Some on Sundays and others on other days. These events are not entertainment. They are leadership formation opportunities. In these moments the children, as Pastor Matt Schroeder at Trinity reminded them, proclaim to us the story of God's incarnate love. By proclaiming this story they are given the opportunity to lead and learn how to fulfill their baptismal vows to witness to Jesus Christ and tell the story of God's love.

If your community had a time like this today or recently please share a picture or story in the comments. Passing on the faith is done when we tell the story over and over. In so doing partnering with the Holy Spirit in creating faith. #NTNL #InMissionTogether
