Hi everyone! I have been catching up with a lot of reading and listening lately and returned to the work that turned me into an opera lover when I was in college. Here is an aria from that opera. It is beautiful.
Such a memorable (for all the right reasons) event last night! Benjamin K. you are amazing. The choir and instrumentalists and readers...what a glorious job you all did. Thank you for bringing that effort to us and making the Advent season alive!
What a beautiful service at Evensong! The music was majestic. Thank you, Benjamin Kolodziej, and all the choir for this awesome experience. God's blessings & my hugs to you, all

Children of the Heavenly Father

New Hymn Meditation:

Children of the heav’nly Father
safely in his bosom gather.
Nestling bird nor star in heaven
such a refuge e’er was given.

God his own doth tend and nourish,
in his holy courts they flourish.
From all evil things he spares them,
in his mighty arms he bears them.

Neither life nor death shall ever
from the Lord his children sever.
Unto them his grace he showeth,
and their sorrows all he knoweth.

Though he giveth or he taketh,
God his children ne’er forsaketh.
His the loving purpose solely
To preserve them pure and holy.

Hymn Meditation: "Praise to the Lord, the Almighty"
(New for August!)
Benjamin Kolodziej, Organist

Praise to the Lord, the Almighty the King of creation!
O my soul, praise Him, for He is thy Health and Salvation~
Join the full throng;
Wake, harp and psalter and song;
South forth in glad adoration!

Praise to the Lord, who o'er all things so wondrously reigneth,
Who, as on wings of an eagle, uplifteth, sustaineth
Hast thou not seen
How thy desires all have been
Granted in what He ordaineth?

Praise to the Lord, who hath fearfully, wondrously, made thee;
Health hath vouchsafed and, when heedlessly falling, hath stayed thee.
What need or grief
Ever hath failed of relief?--
Wings of His mercy did shade thee.

Praise to the Lord, who doth prosper thy work and defend thee,
Who from the heavens the streams of His mercy doth send thee.
Ponder anew
What the almighty can do,
Who with His love doth befriend thee.

Praise to the Lord! Oh, let all that is in me adore Him!
All that hath life and breath, come now with praises before Him!
Let the Amen
Sound from His people again;
Gladly for aye we adore Him.

Amen.

Today we bid farewell to Gabrielle Gilliam, our soprano section leader. The Cantata Deo choir provided a reception in her honor. We will miss her singing with us, but we are glad she has so many opera opportunities this coming year!

INFORMATIONAL MEETING ON SUNDAY, AUGUST 29, at 12:00 pm

We have lots of interest in our fall children’s music program, so much so that we are able to have two choirs: 10 years old and younger, and 11 years old and older.

Plans are still in flux about the schedule as we navigate health concerns, but an informational/organization meeting will be held on Sunday, August 29 at 12:00 noon in the undercroft. Contact Benjamin Kolodziej ([email protected]) for more information.

Let's all wish a superlative birthday to--you know him, you love him--our indefatigable organist Benjamin Kolodziej. “Next to the Word of God, music deserves the highest praise. The gift of language combined with the gift of song was given to man that he should proclaim the Word of God through Music.” ML

Prelude in Eb major, BWV 552 ("St Anne"), Johann Sebastian Bach 07/28/2021

Prelude in Eb major, BWV 552 ("St Anne"), Johann Sebastian Bach

Today we honor the great organist and Kantor Johann Sebastian Bach, who died on this date in 1750:

Johann Sebastian Bach (1685–1750) is acknowledged as one of the most famous and gifted of all composers past and present in the entire western world. Orphaned at the age of ten, Bach was mostly self-taught in music. His professional life as conductor, performer, composer, teacher, and organ consultant began at the age of 19 in the town of Arnstadt and ended in Leipzig, where for the last 27 years of his life he was responsible for all the music in the city's four Lutheran churches. In addition to his being a superb keyboard artist, the genius and bulk of Bach's vocal and instrumental compositions remain overwhelming. A devout and devoted Lutheran, he is especially honored in Christendom for his lifelong insistence that his music was written primarily for the liturgical life of the church to glorify God and edify his people.

[07/13/21]   St John's is looking to reconstitute our Jubilate Children's Choir, which had been disbanded due to Coronatide. We will sing fun songs and do crafts, but also learn about music history, composers, instruments, as well as traditional hymnody and sacred music. An important component of children's choir is also learning how to participate in the liturgy from the choir loft. Rehearsals will be Sunday mornings starting in September. Ideally, we would like to have two groups of singers, a younger group and a youth choir group. If you are near to St John's, whether a church member or not, and have children roughly in the ages of K-7th grade who might be interested, please contact Benjamin Kolodziej, Organist and Choirmaster ([email protected]).

For the last year, some of the Cantate Deo choir at St John's have been meeting via Zoom on Wednesday nights to study a topic of hymnody, music, or some other aspect related to sacred music. Now that our choir is beginning to reengage more in person, we'll bring these sessions to a close this summer. Zoom is frustrating at times, but at least we were able to keep connected, fellowship, and even learn a little bit. There is always a place for other singers/musicians at Music at St John's!

Abide with Me 04/11/2021

Abide with Me

Here’s an evening hymn for this second Sunday of Easter: Abide with Me.

1 Abide with me: fast falls the eventide;
the darkness deepens; Lord, with me abide.
When other helpers fail and comforts flee,
Help of the helpless, O abide with me.

2 Swift to its close ebbs out life's little day;
earth's joys grow dim, its glories pass away.
Change and decay in all around I see.
O thou who changest not, abide with me.

3 I need thy presence every passing hour.
What but thy grace can foil the tempter's power?
Who like thyself my guide and strength can be?
Through cloud and sunshine, O abide with me.

4 I fear no foe with thee at hand to bless,
ills have no weight, and tears no bitterness.
Where is death's sting? Where, grave, thy victory?
I triumph still, if thou abide with me.

5 Hold thou thy cross before my closing eyes.
Shine through the gloom and point me to the skies.
Heaven's morning breaks and earth's vain shadows flee;
in life, in death, O Lord, abide with me.
