The Deep Ellum Community Association proudly presents the Deep Ellum History Project: Exhibit One 1873 - 1929

Join us for the opening reception at the Deep Ellum Open Studios Saturday September 21st 12 - 7 p.m. at Life in Deep Ellum 2803 Taylor St. Dallas, 75226

The first of series, Exhibit One invites you to experience the history and feels of this vibrant neighborhood from its founding in 1873 as a freedman's town through the dawn of the blues era. Discover how Deep Ellum began and how it got its name. See the neighborhood's original boundaries in detail and learn about the industrial boom that stretched those boundaries with Deep Ellum's landmark buildings still standing today.

To add the icing on the proverbial cake, we are bringing out the Tunnel Vision project in homage to Deep Ellum's beloved Good Latimer tunnel which once marked the gateway to the neighborhood.

Braced: New Drawings by Joel Murray

Braced is a group of small-scale drawings of young children holding one another in ambiguous embrace. These intimate ink and watercolor line drawings show moments when young children grapple or hug. Each drawing raises questions regarding the nature of the participants’ relationship. Is it combative or loving? The synchronous clasp of bodies stands as a metaphor for the much larger issues of racial tension and divide in the United States. For me, drawing is a form of rumination, or meditation and it’s the method I use to begin to talk about and understand difficult matters of race. It is also an absurd notion that one or multiple drawings can give total shape to this complex topic.

Race is a significant social category for almost all humans. In the United States, our specific history, and the way that we have or have not dealt with it makes it even more complicated. Obviously, the environment that we create as a society has so much influence over the way children begin to perceive and attach meaning to race. I taught pre-school children for 6 years and this experience informed my decision to make this kind of work. These drawings are idealized imaginings of interconnectivity between children of different races, but they also comment on the difficulty of reconciling complex social categories with their own experience. The result is this group of drawings in which human relationships are more-than-strained – they’re knotted.

Update from Umbrella Gallery

Well, it's grey outside go check out some greyscale art this Saturday!

ANONYMOUS will be featuring 39 local artists, 2 bands, 1 DJ and YOU.
ANONYMOUS’ artists were challenged to create a piece of collectible art using only grayscale values, allowing us to construct an atmosphere of anonymity as, at first glance, each creation and it’s creator will seem anonymous. All works will be up for Art Con-style auction as we kick off our 2016 community-driven philanthropy.

Mark on the Radio

Art Conspiracy always puts on one of my favourite events of the year in Dallas. There will be fun, local art auctions benefiting a deserving local arts charity. There will be local musics from Vodeo, SuperSonic Lips and DJ Son of Stan. And I'll be your humble emcee.

Tomorrow night (indoors) at Life In Deep Ellum!
