AME Council of Bishops

Council of Bishops
African Methodist Episcopal Church

May 21, 2020

The Council of Bishops of the African Methodist Episcopal Church is proud of our Presiding Elders, Pastors, ministerial staff’s and members who obeyed the shut-in. Yet, in spite of all states opening up in some form, the fact is the danger to the people and communities we serve is not over. The global pandemic is still wreaking havoc globally and in the United States. From Cape Town South Africa to Haiti, to Brazil, to California, the numbers of infections and deaths continue to rise. The danger is not over—-keep hope alive.

The Council recently read an article that disturbed us greatly. On Mother’s Day 2020, a church held business as usual Mother’s Day service, later AP ran the headline: Over 180 People Exposed To Virus at California Church. All of them were asked by the Public Health Department to self-quarantine. The danger is not over———keep hope alive.

We all remember the number of our ecumenical Brothers and Sisters who, before the shutdown was enforced, vowed that they would never stop having their traditional worship and meetings. Now we grieve their loss with their families, denominations, and communities. The danger is not over——keep hope alive.

When one considers that many people in the communities we serve find themselves still in the at-risk category, young and old, we must be aware of this statement of a prominent African American journalist: “For many Black people, to reopen now is an invitation to die.” In fact, For black, brown, indigenous, and poor people to be alive during this global pandemic is to be at risk. The danger is not over——keep hope alive.

The thief who has come to steal, kill, and destroy is not finished with the world or the church. We must not risk the lives of our people. We must not risk the life of our beloved African Methodist Episcopal Church. We must come up with a re-entry plan that will strengthen our people, our churches, and our global communities. We must come up with a plan that will help the people, heal the people, and give hope to the people. Our extraordinary African Methodist Episcopal Church has come up with such a plan. It will be presented to the entire church soon. The danger is not over—-keep hope alive.

Finally, the scientist tells us that without testing, tracing, and a COVID-19 inoculation that is available for everybody we should not be quick to reopen. So we are clear, the doors of the church are still open, it is the doors of the church building that are closed until we can go back protecting the lives and health of all those who come into our church buildings. Science tells us the danger is not over, faith tells us to keep hope alive.

The Best Is Yet To Come,

Respectfully Submitted,

The Right Reverend Harry L. Seawright
President

Couch Conversations | Relationship Goals Week 2

We will continue our discussion on Relationship Goals.

It's Giving Tuesday! It is a day where organizations around the world are putting up their virtual "giving trees" with hopes that you will support the needs of schools, churches and other non-profit organizations.

By giving today, you help us be able to feed more families in the midst of this pandemic. You have already helped us in donations to give 500 meals and we want and need to do more.

By giving today, you help our renovation efforts go forward and not stall. You will allow us to be able to restore our sanctuary and fellowship hall. You will help us in installing audio/ visual equipment and instruments. You will help us be able to continue online worship. You will help us expand into new media and territories.

By giving today, you will help us bring the gospel to those who need it the most. You will help us expand our reach.

To give, you can visit www.lovecitydfw.org and click the giving tab. Select the Giving Tuesday Envelope.

Thank you.

We need you now more than ever to partner with us. Save the date. #givingtuesday

Couch Conversations - PUSHING THROUGH TECHNICAL DIFFICULTIES with Joi-Marie McKenzie Lewis

Who We Are?

In 2019, Rev. Vashti Jasmine Saint-Jean was assigned to be the lead pastor of the New Jerusalem African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church by Bishop Vashti Murphy McKenzie, which is located in the Northpark - Elm Thicket area of Dallas, Texas within a block of Love Field Airport. In fact, the original location of the church that is now located on Tyree Street was located where Love Field Airport now stands.

In an effort to continue to rebrand, revive and restore the New Jerusalem AME Church, Rev. Saint-Jean launched a Vision 2020 campaign soon after taking the helm and aggressively launched new church programming and community outreach programs under the heading of Love City DFW and a social media campaign under the heading #LoveCityatLoveField in order to tie the church to its locale.

As a result, the church has grown in membership and is active in creating community partnerships with local businesses, local resources and local schools.

The rebranding helped usher the New Jerusalem AME Church further into relevant ministry and further unify the local church body with the surrounding community, the first of which was initiated by it's previous pastors.

New Jerusalem AME Church was birthed in 2006 out of the merging of two historic AME churches: Knight Chapel AME Church and Simms Chapel AME Church.

Simms Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church was established in 1890 by the Rev. Wash Simms who came from the White Rock Community of Dallas, Texas. Rev. Simms for whom the church was named was one of the most powerful preachers of his time. The original plot of ground where Simms Chapel stood was donated to this church by Rev. Myers of Carrollton, Texas, which was unique in that the land was donated by a white minister to a black church. It is now the location of Dignity Memorial Funeral Home in Carrollton, Texas.

The church was later relocated when the State Highway Department purchased part of the land for the highway. After some time, the church decided it was time to build its last edifice. They met for two years in an elementary school and with the help of their building fund, special projects and some financial assistance from the sister churches in the Episcopal District, Simms Chapel was able to build and pay off the church in one year. That edifice still stands to this day.

Simms Chapel AME's last edifice was sold as the church merged with another church, Knight Chapel AME Church.

Knight Chapel AME Church was organized in 1884 on Old Tom Field Road. The property was given to Bro. Gilbert Knight who became one of the trustees of Knight Chapel AME Church. The first property was located in the Elm Thicket area and was sold for the expansion of the Love Field Airport. The church then moved to North Park. In 1906, an edifice was erected and the cornerstone was laid under the pastoral charge of Rev. W.S. Grisby. In 1924, Rev. W.S. Bush led the church to be built on Victoria. Once again, the land had to be sold for the expansion of the community school which is now the K.B. Polk Elementary School. The church then moved to its present location where, New Jerusalem/ Love City now worships, after two lots were purchased.

In September 1987, Knight Chapel celebrated 103 years of growth with a Homecoming Service. It was during this time where the church under the leadership of Rev. Billy C. Wren that plans for the construction of a new building was announced. The construction began in the December of 1987 and completed December 1988. The church edifice was dedicated in March 1989, however, the current Pastor, Rev. B.C. Wren passed away and a memorial service was held for Rev. Wren in 1989. Due to the dedication, courage and strength of Rev. Wren and the members, a new church was built where New Jerusalem now worships.

In 2006, Knight Chapel under the leadership of the late Rev. Gary Johnson that Presiding Elder Wright proposed the merging of Knight Chapel with Simms Chapel as both congregations had needs which the other could provide. The two churches were combined under the name of New Jerusalem AME Church and Rev. Sylvester Patton, II served as its inaugural pastor.
