We had a wonderful Fall Break Lake Retreat this weekend! Our focus was community-building, and we enjoyed time away to rest, eat, laugh, and grow together. We give thanks for vaccines for making gathering together safe, and for our generous supporters who provide the funds to make these opportunities possible! Thank you!

Thank you to all who joined us bright and early for our first Fall Fundraising Breakfast! It was a joyful morning filled with song, story, fellowship & food. We are so grateful for the ways you make this ministry possible.

Special thanks to Northridge Presbyterian Church for hosting us, our incredible chefs from First Presbyterian Church of Richardson, TX, and to all of our students and Board members for making it happen. 🌻

Jessie is featured today on the Office of Christian Formation PCUSA page! 🎉

We are wrapping up September this week celebrating leaders and highlighting resources!

Rev. Jessie Light-Wells (she/her) is the Campus Minister & Executive Director for UKirk SMU, a campus ministry that she planted in 2019 and continues to nurture and guide. UKirk SMU is the only open and affirming Christian ministry at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, TX, and nearly half of the students involved identify as LGBTQIA+.

Jessie wrote for the UKirk Lenten devo last spring and has a new QuickSheet for UKirk dropping soon. Watch for it and look at all the great resources UKirk has for working with young adults here: https://ukirk.org/resources/

We have seen incredible growth over the last year, and now count about 45 students as regular UKirk-ers. Providing this space to belong would not be possible without you, and we give thanks for all the in-kind gifts that have already been offered this year through our weekly dinner providers.

Our students enjoy a meal every week together after worship, and groups from local churches have stepped in to provide these meals with love and care. We’d love to have you and your community bring supper! You can see our available dates and sign up here: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/805084fa8ab2ca0fa7-ukirk4

And of course it’s still #NTxGivingDay! We’ve raised $3,350 so far! To make a gift toward our $5,000 goal, go to: https://www.northtexasgivingday.org/ukirksmu

Worshiping together is how we build community and connect to God, and each Sunday night we are creating belonging by welcoming all to the table.

UKirk SMU is the only Christian ministry at SMU that is fully open and affirming to LGBTQIA+ students, and about half of our students identify as LGBTQIA+. We consistently hear from students that UKirk is a place that not only nurtures their faith, but also allows them to be fully themselves.

On this #ntxgivingday, make a gift to help us keep growing in our care for this community! https://www.northtexasgivingday.org/ukirksmu

We’ve raised $1825 so far and are hoping to reach $5000. Every dollar counts!

We are so proud of Liana Forss and the work she's doing at First Presbyterian Church of Dallas this summer as the Summer Youth and Faith Formation Intern! Read more about her sense of discernment and call below.

We are excited to continue building partnerships of mutuality between congregations and UKirk SMU community members, and rejoice in the ways God is knitting all of us together!

“I’ve realized more in the last year than ever before to listen to those little whispers of God’s voice,” says Liana Forss, our new Summer Youth Ministry and Faith Formation Intern. In talking with Liana, it’s clear that she is a woman of many passions including biology and medicine, modern dance, women and gender studies, and faith formation.

When she felt God calling her to move to Dallas to attend SMU, doors swung open for her to explore each of these arenas in her academics and extracurricular life. She laughs, “I have no idea how these will one day come together, but I love seeing how God has given me so many opportunities to learn and experience new things.”

Though moving to Dallas in the middle of the pandemic was daunting, Liana quickly found her people through UKirk, an SMU campus ministry affiliated with PCUSA. This organization encouraged her to lean into her faith more than ever before and follow God’s voice toward a path she never imagined. “I’m getting to help design this year’s Youth Service Week which is basically my dream,” Liana describes. “I’m so excited to serve, grow, and have fun with this group.”

We couldn’t be more excited to welcome Liana to our team for the summer! She will be around on Sundays, so make sure to say hi, introduce yourself, learn about Youth Service Week, and chat with her about everything from science and dance to social justice and faith.
