Why You'll Never Be Free until You Start Obeying God

The last two Sundays we've spoken of freedom from a couple of different biblical texts. PCA Pastor Kevin DeYoung ties in some further thoughts here on the subject of biblical freedom. As was mentioned a couple of weeks ago, biblical freedom is a freedom "from" but always also a freedom "for". Why are we free? To worship and serve the Lord and in that we find true delight, liberty, and blessing.

Out Truest Citizenship and Greatest Freedoms

In light of our recognition and celebration of July 4th this past weekend, this prayer offered by Scottie Smith is one of encouragement and reminds us of deeper and abiding freedoms we know through Jesus.
Yesterday, I preached upon James 1:22-25 and one of the focuses was on the true and abiding liberty we know in and through God's Word, the perfect law of liberty.
~ Pastor Adam

thegospelcoalition.org It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery. Gal. 5:1 Lord Jesus, it’s July 4th, 2020; and as unwell as America currently is, we remain grateful for the privileges we still enjoy as citizens. But the benefits of ...

Our "Secret Weapon" in an Age of Us-Against-Them | Scott Sauls

"In short, because Jesus has covered all of our offenses, we can be among the least offensive and least offended people in the world. This is the way of the gentle answer."
In our age of outrage, vitriol, and incivility, the need for and power of gentleness and a gentle reply is monumental. As Christians, we have a rich resource in the gospel for such gentleness of character and conduct toward others.
Check out this article from fellow PCA pastor, Scott Sauls.
Proverbs 15:1 - A gentle answer turns away wrath, But a harsh word stirs up anger. (NASB)
Proverbs 15:4 - A gentle tongue is a tree of life, but perverseness in it breaks the spirit. (ESV)

[06/01/20]   There is so much to lament across our cultural landscape right now. Injustice, racism, violence, looting, fear, suspicion, political maneuvering, media spin...and these things on all sides, among all races...
We groan inwardly, as the apostle Paul says in Romans 8. Yes and Amen. Our sin alienates us from God but it doesn't stop there; alienating us from ourselves, others, and creation itself. Only the gospel of Jesus can heal us and put us back together rightly, making us new and, indeed, making all things new.
Our calling doesn't stop at lament for we must act and live out our newness in Jesus loving God and others, but it also doesn't bypass lament. I am not always good at it or know how to do it. May the Spirit help us to cry out to God and then conform our lives to Him and His Word.
~ Isaiah 53:3-6 ~

~ Pastor Adam

Here are some quotes from Michael Card on the subject of lament and sorrow:

"We were created to live with God in a garden, yet we wake every morning in the desert of a fallen world..."

"Jesus understood that lament was the only true response of faith to the brokenness and fallenness of the world. It provides the only trustworthy bridge to God across the deep seismic quaking of our lives..."

"“It’s an odd thing. Jesus wept. Job wept. David wept. Jeremiah wept. They did it openly. Their weeping became a matter of public record. Their weeping, sanctioned by inclusion in our Holy Scriptures, a continuing and reliable witness that weeping has an honored place in the life of faith.

Why are Christians, of all people, embarrassed by tears, uneasy in the presence of sorrow, unpracticed in the language of lament? It certainly is not a biblical heritage, for virtually all our ancestors in the faith were thoroughly ‘acquainted with grief.’ And our Savior was, as everyone knows, ‘a Man of Sorrows.'”

A Prayer for Memorial Day

A Wonderful Prayer for Memorial Day. May God pour out His Spirit upon our nation that the hearts of men and women would be turned to Him. We remember those who have fallen in service to our country - its people and liberties - and we remember "the ultimate servant-warrior—the quintessential man of service—the one who, on the cross, waged the war to end all wars."....our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
~ Pastor Adam

thegospelcoalition.org Then I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse! The one sitting on it is called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he judges and makes war. His eyes are like a flame of fire, and on his head are many diadems, and he has a name written that no one knows but himself. He is clothed in a robe....

Church, Don’t Let Coronavirus Divide You

Some wise and helpful reflection here for the followers of Jesus. I'm sure all of us, including me, could benefit from this exhortation. Let's honor one another and bear patiently with one another as we all seek best how to sort things out in "how to prudently resume in-person gatherings". Let us pray to that end and may the Lord help us all.
~ Pastor Adam

QUOTES: "In such a precarious and polarizing environment, how can churches move forward in beautiful unity (Ps. 133) rather than ugly division?"

"...little is more Christian than a posture of sacrifice (Rom. 12:1). "

"Unfounded certainty—on the part of laypeople, leaders, modelers, and “experts” alike—is a contagion at least as viral as COVID-19 itself. We could all use a bit more humility, and the church should lead the way."

"Let’s model humility by acknowledging that everything is not obvious, and we are all just trying to do the best we can in this “build the plane in midair” moment."

"We shouldn’t be surprised by how rare it is for someone to hold humble, complicated, “both/and” views in today’s hyper-partisan, media-catechized world."

thegospelcoalition.org The world is dividing over COVID-19. Don’t let it happen in your church.

Life Is a Battle; Dress Appropriately - Iain Duguid

2 Truths That Will Sustain You in Suffering - Paul David Tripp

2 truths & 3 actions for us in walking through suffering. Good words to ponder this week from Paul Tripp (see two short videos below). As you and/or your family and friends walk through this time of hardship (COVID-19, quarantine, isolation) or for any time of suffering you face in your life, may the Holy Spirit equip us to cling to Christ, preach the gospel to ourselves and one another, and receive God's great comfort.

48th General Assembly Postponed

Leaders from our denomination (The Presbyterian Church in America - PCA) met yesterday and decided to postpone our General Assembly scheduled for June in Birmingham, AL. General Assembly is a yearly gathering of our denomination. It is the highest court in our system of church government and is comprised of all the Teaching Elders/Pastors as well as representative Ruling Elders from congregations. The one body meets to conduct kingdom business as the church, fellowship together in ministry and mission, oversee various matters in the life of the denomination, to receive ongoing training, and to care for one another. It is sad not to be able to meet together (I personally look forward to General Assembly and the vital kingdom work we do) but a wise action for us to take considering the current situation we are facing and the concern for safety of those who would travel and gather. Pray for our denomination as this postponement will entail costs that cannot be recouped from preparations that were being made in advance; some reports indicate something in the neighborhood of $400,000. The good news is that they have been able to designate Birmingham for General Assembly in 2022 so some of the planning that went into the event will not be in vain.

If you find you have some extra time these days, take some time to enrich and equip your soul with solid biblical teaching. You will find nourishment and faith-strengthening teaching here.

Hear what the apostle Peter, inspired by the Holy Spirit, exhorted the people of his day with; the Holy Spirit speaks the same to us today:
I Peter 4:12-13,16, 19 - "12 Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery trial when it comes upon you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you. 13 But rejoice insofar as you share Christ's sufferings, that you may also rejoice and be glad when his glory is revealed. 16 Yet if anyone suffers as a Christian, let him not be ashamed, but let him glorify God in that name. 19 Therefore let those who suffer according to God's will entrust their souls to a faithful Creator while doing good."

God is faithful. Let's trust Him and do good and serve others in His Name.
~ Pastor Adam

TGC Q&A: Suffering, Healing, and the Hope of Eternity

Listen in to a conversation between two women who have suffered much but who have such a depth of faith and hope in God. You'll be glad you did.
I admire these sisters in Christ and I think you will too (if you don't know them already). They are grounded in Scripture, give us nourishing truth, and point us to solid hope for these troubled times.

Responding to Pandemics: 4 Lessons from Church History

"Their impulse to move toward the needy, displayed in heroic sacrifice, is entirely Christlike; we dare not be less sacrificial in the love we seek to embody. At the same time, the wisdom of such moves in our own day, when we may ourselves be carriers of the infection, needs careful thought...As we look to these historic examples, let the Spirit lead us in our application...And may we—with our own pandemic—live out the wisdom and way of Jesus before a watching world."
~ Glen Scrivener

The Church has been here before. Learning from church history (things that were exemplary or mistakes made) is a blessing. May the Holy Spirit help us to learn from the faithfulness and godliness of the Church in the past that we may leave a faithful and godly example for the Church in the future and magnify Jesus in our day.
- Pastor Adam
