Hey, PVI alumni/development folks - I usually enjoy leafing through my issue of Panther Tracks, but something really caught my eye in this latest issue. The PVI history timeline makes a really odd leap back from 1930 to include mention of an English “land grant” in the 1600s. If you’re going back that far, where’s the acknowledgement of the native Manahoac people that lived on the land on which PVI occupied in Fairfax at the time of said grant? If you’re going to include history, please include more than just white colonial history. Let’s do better, friends.

Dear PVI Alumni & Friends,

With great sadness but hope in the Resurrection, we share that Senor Ron Pompei, retired PVI Spanish teacher, passed away last Wednesday.

Senor Pompei joined our faculty in 1998 and retired in 2010. Ron always had a smile, held his students to high standards, and loved teaching high school. Before coming to PVI, Ron retired from teaching in Fairfax County.

Ron was a devout Catholic who attended daily Mass, modeled our faith, and loved Jesus. He was a model Catholic gentleman.

Ron’s funeral Mass will be held Friday, June 18, at 11 am at St. Leo the Great Catholic Church in Fairfax.

Let us be reminded of the words of St. Francis de Sales, "Let God gather to himself what He has planted in His garden…He takes nothing out of season."

Let us all pray for the repose of Ron’s soul and for all those who mourn his passing.

Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May his soul and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.

May we always strive to LIVE JESUS!

PVI Alumni & Friends,

With great sadness but hope in the Resurrection, we share that Mr. Lou Pharao, PVI Social Studies teacher, passed away yesterday, Tuesday, June 8.

Mr. Pharao joined our staff in 2005 and taught U.S. History, U.S. Government, and Practical Law classes. He retired from full-time teaching in 2014 but remained a part-time teacher until last month. Mr. Pharao was a well-respected teacher, advisor, and friend. Many of our recent students interacted with Mr. Pharao after school while he drove the PVI bus to many athletic events and practices.

As a native New Yorker, Mr. Pharao was a graduate of Cardinal Hayes Catholic High School in the Bronx. He lived the motto of his high school, “A Hayesman is always a gentleman,” through his positive gentleman qualities and his love of our Catholic faith. His love of his children was always evident when you spoke with him. He is the proud father of three PVI graduates: Kelleigh ‘98, Erin ’00, and Diana ’03.

After a career as a New York City police officer, Mr. Pharao enjoyed a career with the DEA. After retirement, he studied education at George Mason University and then joined our faculty in 2005. He loved teaching and his passion was evident every time you interacted with him.

Mr. Pharao lived each day to the fullest, shared his positive outlook and thoughts on life, and loved teaching. Last week he shared this with Dr. Opfer, “I want to thank you and the staff and the teachers for all their prayers. Tell my students I am proud to be their teacher. PVI has been a blessing in my life these years.” He entered Hospice care Monday and went home to our Lord Tuesday.

Funeral arrangements will be posted when available.

Let us be reminded of the words of St. Francis de Sales, "Let God gather to himself what He has planted in His garden…He takes nothing out of season."

Let us all pray for the repose of Mr. Pharao’s soul and for all those who mourn his passing.

Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May his soul and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.

May we always strive to LIVE JESUS!

Go Panthers!

PVI v BMN

01/27/2021

This past Saturday, following the Mass honoring PVI’s founding principal Fr. Heet, there was a special presentation unveiling the name of our new campus lobby.

Fr. Heet's gentleness, kindness, and strength has a way of making all who walk through the door feel welcome. We are excited to announce that the main lobby of our new campus – a place where we will gather, celebrate, welcome back old friends, and invite in new ones – will be named the Fr. Donald J. Heet, OSFS Lobby.

Additionally, because he helped create the blueprint for what makes PVI so unique, Ginny Colwell and Tom Opfer presented Father Heet with an original blueprint of the PVI Fairfax auditorium. We can’t imagine a better new home for this gem that we discovered while packing up Fairfax – than with the man who once called it home.

We are forever indebted to Fr. Heet and the Oblates of St. Francis de Sales, who established the cornerstone and foundation of PVI. We are who we are, because of you.
