In modern western medicine has a very simplistic view of food as calories derived from carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins, minerals, micronutrients and water. In contrast the ancient Eastern philosophy and its medicine, Ayurveda has a holistic view, which is more comprehensive. It involves both the body as well as the mind. The mind is above the body in the making of health and in causing of disease. Presence of nutrients and lack of it and its elimination are important components of health and disease.

THREE TYPES OF FOOD:

SATWICK FOOD:
Food is of three types (B.G 17-8,9 &10) naturally grown, balanced, tasty food that is freshly prepared, consumed at the right place, at right time, in right attitude, the one that promotes longevity, the one that enhances memory, the one that brings satiety, the one that takes time to enter the blood (not rapid release like simple sugars) is Satwic Food (B.G 17-8).

RAJASIC FOOD:
Food that is too hot, too spicy, consumed in a hurry and worry is Rajasic food. Foods that are Bitter, sour and too spicy, dry without oil, the one causes hunger again too quickly, the one that increase the thirst are Rajasic Foods (B.G 17- 9)

TAMASIC FOOD:
Cold, dry without oil, smelly food and all other foods when consumed in excess is tamasic foods. Milk that is Satwic when consumed in excess becomes Tamasic food. (B.G 17-10)

FOOD AS THE BODY:

Our physical body is called the Annamaya Kosa, which is the first of the five Kosas. Human according to this ancient wisdom has five layers of coverings. They are 1. Food Sheath (Annamaya Kosa) 2. Vital Energy Sheath (Pranamaya Kosa) 3. Mind Sheath (Manomaya Kosa) 4. Knowledge Sheath (Vignanamaya Kosa) and 5. Bliss Sheath (Anandamaya Kosa). Food Sheath constitutes the Gross Body (Stula Sareera). The Subtle Body (Sukshma Sareera) is constituted by Vital Energy Sheath, Mind Sheath and Knowledge Sheath and Causal Body (Kaarana Sareera) is constituted by the Bliss Sheath.

FOOD AS THE MIND:

Food according to Sanatana Dharma has three parts, namely the gross. subtle and causal portions. The gross portion of the food gets excreted as f***s and urine. The subtle portion becomes the flesh, blood and bones. The causal portion becomes the mind. The attitude and the state of mind of the farmer who produced the produce as food, the mental state of the house wife/cook reflects on the mind of the consumer of that food.
Poultry and its eggs from the chickens grown in restricted, constricted cages, may cause feeling of that imprisonment in the minds of the poultry consumer. Similarly, meat consumed out of the cattle that are machine axed in slaughter houses, their fear and anxiety of impending death and dying may be transferred to the consumers of that beef. It is a well-known fact that the vegetarian food has the least mind in it. Hence for a spiritual seeker who needs to have a still mind in their practice (sadhana) is recommended vegetarian diet.

FOOD IS LIFE:

“Annadbhavantu Bhutani” (B.G 3-14). Life (Prana) emanates from food. If one throws a piece of bread outside on the floor, by the next day, one can notice it to be bursting with life and activity. Before the baby is born, the food for the baby is ready in the form of mother’s breast milk. Yolk sac is food for the future life in the egg. Life emanates from food. Food comes from earth and water with combination of air (photosynthesis) and digested in the fire of HCL in stomach, combustion promoted by space. Thus, life is the result of five elements of nature (Pancha Bhootas) earth, water, fire, air and space.

ALL SENSORY INPUTS ARE FOOD:

Like the saying “food for thought” – there is thought in food and food in thought. Food poisoning happens through all these five senses. This is the reason Sanatana Dharma promotes Patra Suddhi, Padardha Suddhi and Paka Suddhi. Paka suddhi. Purity of the cook’s mind that makes the food is an important element in eastern cultures. Where the food is consumed also makes a difference in outcome. Food taken while watching a TV serial makes a difference in outcome depending on the nature of things watched while eating.

FOOD IN HEALTH AND DISEASE:

Moderate amount of a balanced meals is health and excess or lack of which results in disease “Yuktha Viharasya” says Bhagavad Gita (6-17). This means moderate amount of balanced food taken in at the right place, with right attitude and at right time promotes health.
Two slokas in Bhagavad Gita, 4-24 (Brahmarpanam) and 15-4 (Aham Vaisvanaro Bhutva) formed the food prayer. Purpose of these food prayers is to create an attitude of oneness and unity while eating food.

ECO SYSTEM POISONING:

AIR POLLUTION: Human greed to produce more and more is responsible for food producing farmers resorting to using fertilizers and pesticides that ruined the eco system with poisons. What is a neuro toxin for insects is also toxic to the human nervous system? Pesticides sprayed liberally on paddy fields gets into air that is breathed by the neighboring villagers resulting in Peripheral Neuropathy and cancers and other neuro-degenerative diseases.

WATER POLLUTION:

Pesticides that is sprayed ion the paddy fields get into the water –this poisoned water flows into the tank in the village down stream. This contaminated water is consumed by the cattle that secrete the poison in their milk, which is consumed by humans causing diseases. Thus, is milk is poisoned The birds drink the contaminated water and die. As a result, the bird species, who act as natural crop pest controller by eating the insects that destroy crops declined. This barrier was destroyed causing more further use of the pesticides.
Same water drains into Ocean and fish gets poisoned and die. When this contaminated fish is consumed by humans they will be affected.

ANIMAL REARING PRACTICES ROLE ON HUMANS:

Cattle that are given antibiotics and steroids, raised on corn (which is not natural feed) and animal remains has an adverse effect on the consumers of that meat. Children brought up on steroid laden meat have tall big bodies with handicapped immune resistance. This could be a reason for increase in incidence of auto -immune diseases.

CANNING, PRESERVATIVES CHEMICALS AND COLORING:

Processed foods and beverages have preservatives, coloring material and more aluminum. These possibly influences human’s health, particularly for neuro- degenerative conditions like Alzheimer’s Disease and Parkinson’s Disease.

DDT FOR MOSQUITO CONTROL:

DDT that was banned in several countries was liberally sprayed in the houses as part of mosquito control program. This DDT contaminated human food also and is the cause of increase of rural GI cancer incidence.

AMINITIES/ICONS OF PROSPERITY:

With the advent of motorized personal transportation resulted in humans with no real exercise. With the availability of Refrigerator, Micro Wave Oven, food availability increased at all hours easily. Coupled with TV in every house cultivated the habit of eating while watching television. This increased the quantity of junk food (high sugar and calorie content) intake causing obesity and diabetes and DJD.

REPLACEMENT OF THE CULTURE OF MILLET FOODS:

Several indigenous cultural habits of eating locally produced and available millets (Higher glycemic index) was replaced by more sophisticated rice, wheat, bread, processed foods that invaded worldwide markets, has replaced with more simple sugars of lower glycemic index. This is responsible for the global epidemic of Diabetes we are facing today.

GREED OF INDUSTRY:

Greed of pharmaceutical industry, processed food and beverage industry that supported self-interest business interests.

MODERATION AND MIDDLE PATH:

“Samatvam Yogamuthyate” – B.G 2-48, Buddha’s discovery of the middle path after 12 years of extreme austerities, “Yuktha Viharasya” B.G 6-17, reflect the eastern culture of food. This culture is replaced by a culture that believed in extremes, fads. This resulted in myriads of fad diets including low carbohydrate diets, cholesterol lowering low fat diets.
Truth always lies in the middle. When in doubt follow the nature is the principle that I go by which always helped me. Any diets, no matter how popular they are only temporary fads and will soon be replaced another fad.

QUANTITY OF FOOD AND ITS EFFECT:

It is proved in rat experiments that excess feeding decreased the life span of rats, while moderate feeding increased the life span. It is said in that some total of food one is destined to eat is fixed. One can eat moderately and live longer and over eat and run out of food and thus die earlier. This lends credence to the saying that one ran out of one’s grain. This is particularly true with elderly whose caloric requirements approaches to close 50% of adults towards the end of life.

It is said:
Once a day eater is a great Yogi
Twice a day eater is a great Bhogi
Thrice a day eater is a Rogi

ROLE OF GHEE:

Ghee not only helps with memory and creativity, it when mixed with rice that is short acting converts that into long acting by coating rice, thus delaying its absorption.

IMPORTANCE OF FOOD WASTES ELIMINATION:

Elimination toxic food wastes is considered an important step in maintain human health and its longevity.

EXCESSIVE SANITIZATION LEADS TO DISEASE:

Sanatory, clean living is desired up to a point and excess of this undermines our immune system readiness and causes auto-immune diseases and allergic conditions. We should remember that that we live in co-habitation with micro-organisms and it is only when our immune system readiness is hampered most often, we get afflicted by the microbes causing disease. Pre-occupation with excessive cleanliness is responsible for global increase burden of auto immune and allergic diseases.

APPLIED KNOWLEDGE IN CAUSATION OF DISEASE:

TONGUE EXERCISES FOR MEMORY:

It has come to my attention on face book about tongue exercises for enhancement of depleted memory in Alzheimer’s Dementia. On rationalizing this phenomenn, this is what I came up with to be the probable cause from this. Tongue has two functions 1. Taste and the other 2. Speech. As taste it represents flow of water (Rasa), prana and as speech represents fire that is also the mind. Thus, exercising tongue should have positive effect on vial energy, mind and its memory. People say my gut feeling, meaning my inner feeling or intuitive feeling. This represents (G I Tract) endoderm. Memories and feelings are connected. It is quite natural that exercising the tongue is memory exercise.

PARKONSON’S DISEASE:

Parkinson’s disease is a neuro degenerative disease and is a moment disorder and the first sensation to loosen is smell. From this I am hypothesizing that the cause of PD is food and this disease is food related. Since PD also increasing in its incidence in the developing world along with diabetes mellitus, this food is of western origin.
The foods that became popular in developing world’s that is of western origin is 1, Canned soft drinks 2. Processed canned foods. 3. Bottled water 4, Sanitizing hands with disinfectants. Possible culprit could be trace metal like Aluminum from soda and other cans. Research should be focused into this important aspect.

CURRENT RESEARCH ON NUTRITION AND PARKINSON’S DISEASE:

A review of a comprehensive article published in “Frontiers of Neuroscience” 2014; 6:36 March 2014 “THE EMERGING ROLE OF NUTRITION IN PARKINSON’S DISEASE’ authored by Stacy E. Seidl et all, depicts Dairy product consumption to increase the PD risk, while fat intake, Cholesterol lowering, red meat consumption. Iron intake, Vitamin D, C intake has possible increased or questionable risk of PD.

The following nutritional products are noted to have a beneficial effect on PD. They are 1. Phytochemicals 2. Fruits except for Pomegranate 3. Vegetables 4. Carotenoids and Beta carotene 5. Riboflavin 6. Pyridoxin 7. Ni****ne containing foods of Solanaceae family like Tomatoes, Potatoes and Peppers 8. Omega-3 Fatty Acids (DHA) 9. Soy (Genistein) 10. Caffeine 11. Tea both green and black12. Moderate consumption of alcohol as Beer and wine 13. Co Enzyme 10 (Q10) 14. High glycemic Index Carbohydrates 15. Vitamin E.

It is noteworthy to see that majority of the nutrition research was done in not in USA, but mostly in Asian countries. The reason for this understandable. U.S. Research facilities in major universities tend to focus on highly funded research like grants and money from drug companies. Since very little money is there in nutritional research, it draws very little attention by University faculties.

Even the finding that dairy products consumption having increased implication with PD is not surprising with the scenario of ecological contamination with pesticides in fodder and drinking water and reed meat contamination with steroids and antibiotics. It is imperative that we should further investigate the precise causes.

Lowering Cholesterol with medicines is big business for pharma industry, hence highly promoted even by even the American Heart Association which is recommending lower and lower cholesterol level targets below 100.The price we are all paying for cholesterol lowering has its deleterious effect on memory, muscles and on neuro degeneration. This risk was currently conveniently ignored and was not publicized, for reasons only known to the drug manufacturers.
Pesticide residue in drinking water, foods, milk, metals like aluminum in traces through canned foods, canned soft drinks, inhaled environmental pollutants in automobile exhaust, water chlorination, sanitizing chemicals, preservative chemicals and coloring agents in processed foods, food adulteration materials, refined sugars, genetically engineered food products, contaminated fish and animal products are potential culprits. Our public health system has an obligation to be the investigator and finds ways to detect the causative agents. Either we spend some resources now to detect the culprit agents now or spend later in multiples for treating the diseases that they cause in the society. The former is wiser and cheaper way to go for the society.
