THE TRUTH ABOUT LABOR DAY
by Kathy Nickerson

And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men
Colossians 3:23 NKJV

Labor Day weekend is a good time to remind ourselves why we do what we do. Although it is easy to think of our day jobs as secular and our Sunday worship services as sacred, that isn’t true. Everything we do, every moment of our day, is sacred and devoted to God.

Does God care how I wash this dish? He certainly does. My attention to detail reflects His perfection. The careful scrub I give this plate demonstrates His excellence. My right attitude about the job comes from His righteousness. And this act of service to others shows His heart toward people. (Nobody is going to get sick from eating off this dirty plate.)

Maybe that sounds simplistic but walking with God doesn’t need to be complicated. It boils down to loving God and loving people more than I love myself. That includes the way I wash a dish.

So, Happy Labor for God Day. Every day.

Our Story

The Heartland Community is celebrating twenty-five years of life together in 2020. We are so grateful for the goodness of God. He has taken us from the glimmer of an idea in the mind of Charlie Sharpe to a small town with a church, a school, a Bible College, businesses, and recovery centers. Please come visit us during one of our special events coming up, or anytime!

Our neighborhood probably resembles your own community in many ways. There are a variety of ministries and services available, including year-long recovery programs for men and women, a K-12 school, Children & Youth Home, a college, and the church. The houses are filled with families who live and work here. But one thing that makes Heartland unique is that we are an intentional Christian community. An intentional community is simply one that is built around a specific interest or goal (such as a golfing community, a retirement community, or an artist colony). Ours happens to be a group of people who believe Jesus is the answer to every issue we face – including addiction, anger, broken homes, and financial crises. Men and women who commit themselves to the process of restoration find help at Heartland through the power of God and the encouragement of people who have walked a similar path.

Heartlandmissouri.com serves a directory of the businesses, ministries, and resources available in the Heartland Community. Click through the pages, read the stories of changed lives at heartland-ministries.org, and we hope you’ll make plans to come and visit soon!

You can join us for church each Sunday at 10am (in person, or via livestream).
