MORNING DEVOTION
with Josh Smith

Continuing on the “read Proverbs in a month” challenge, I realized something today: It’s hard to stay in a bad mood when reading the words in this poetic book. Proverbs chapter three is full of hard-hitting truth in each line:

“Let love and faithfulness never leave you.”

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart.”

“Do not be wise in your own eyes.”

“Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due, when it is in your power to act.”

Most of these Proverbs present the reader with a challenge: Don’t take the easy road, but instead choose Wisdom. God wants all of us to experience His goodness and love Him with our whole heart. When we choose to stay focused on ourselves, we are stepping out of the Kingdom of God. It’s on us to look to Jesus, taking steps to let Wisdom shine through our lives in love, joy, serving, and truth.

What is Wisdom challenging you to live out today?

THE TRUTH ABOUT LABOR DAY
by Kathy Nickerson

And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men
Colossians 3:23 NKJV

Labor Day weekend is a good time to remind ourselves why we do what we do. Although it is easy to think of our day jobs as secular and our Sunday worship services as sacred, that isn’t true. Everything we do, every moment of our day, is sacred and devoted to God.

Does God care how I wash this dish? He certainly does. My attention to detail reflects His perfection. The careful scrub I give this plate demonstrates His excellence. My right attitude about the job comes from His righteousness. And this act of service to others shows His heart toward people. (Nobody is going to get sick from eating off this dirty plate.)

Maybe that sounds simplistic but walking with God doesn’t need to be complicated. It boils down to loving God and loving people more than I love myself. That includes the way I wash a dish.

So, Happy Labor for God Day. Every day.

MORNING DEVOTION

with Josh Smith

A memory popped up on my social media today with a timely message of encouragement. I can’t remember what was going on in the world on September 2, 2014, but God’s promises are eternal, everlasting, and absolute. Here’s what a younger version of me had to say:

“In a world that seems so full of hate, and fear, and loss, I’m hanging on to this promise and prayer today: ‘The earth is filled with your love, O Lord; teach me your decrees.’ Psalm 119:64”

The world will always be lost without Jesus. His Word, His path, His Kingdom is our only hope. How can we pray for you today?

It felt kind of like a "back to school" day at Church last Sunday. We moved to a 9am corporate worship time slot, Sunday School classes for adults, small groups for GPS, ID318 youth group, and then a potluck to end the day. More than one table was looking forward to an afternoon nap. Thanks, family, for a great day together!

MORNING DEVOTION
with Heather Grawe

Paul gives us quite a bit to think about in the fifth chapter of 1 Thessalonians. He starts out the chapter talking about The Day of The Lord. Now, some people may get fearful when they hear that statement, but for those that know Jesus and have made Him Lord over their lives, His return is exciting and something to look forward to.

Until that day comes we are encouraged by Paul and exhorted to rejoice always - "Rejoice always; pray without ceasing; in everything give thanks; for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus." 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

I am daily working on that one as I live with a chronic illness. Pray without ceasing, talk to God constantly about how good HE is and ask for HIS help in ALL things. Be grateful for all things: big, small, happy, or sad. For ALL of those things bring us closer to our Lord and Savior. ❤️

A BETTER DAY
by Kathy Nickerson

O Lord, you hear the desire of the afflicted;
you will strengthen their heart; you will incline your ear
to do justice to the fatherless and the oppressed,
so that man who is of the earth may strike terror no more.
Psalm 10:17-18 ESV

It’s hard to believe a day will come when “man who is of the earth” strikes terror no more. But God promises that day is coming for His people. All terrorists will disappear. Right along with all disease, all sorrow, all pain, and all fear.

Everything dark and ugly will be swallowed up, and we will live in perfect righteousness, peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit.

Until that day, we are “standing on the promises of God,” as the old hymn says. Our faith is not in armies nor peace treaties. Not in politicians nor aid workers, even though all those things have their place.

Our hope is in the everlasting God, the maker of Heaven and earth. The One who strengthens our hearts and inclines His ear. He teaches us how to live in these times with true peace, real joy, and the deep contentment of knowing and loving Him.

So, we shall persevere until He comes again in the fullness of time. Not just enduring, but enjoying the life He has given us here.

MORNING DEVOTION
with Josh Smith

We're going to start going over the book of Proverbs for our youth services in September, and the first few verses of this poetic book stir, challenge, and encourage us to seek a way of life that's much greater than the path that's easy, simple, and apathetic.

Proverbs 1:7 tells us "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge." It's an often-quoted scripture that honestly is a little tricky to understand. What is the "fear of the Lord?" How does being scared help me learn? Where do I start? A simple breakdown is that when we listen to the Holy Spirit, read our Bibles, and apply the teachings of Jesus to our lives, we end up living a life submitted to the will of God. This is living out the fear of the Lord. We are telling God that His way is better our own and we recognize His amazing goodness, knowledge of everything (literally everything) and we submit our lives to be part of His Kingdom on earth. This act of submission is where we start, and like the end of Proverbs chapter one says, "Whoever listens to me (Wisdom) will dwell secure and be at ease."

Do you have a favorite Proverb? What is one truth that you hold from this book?

MORNING DEVOTION
with Josh Smith

This past week for youth group, we talked about things in the Bible that encourage or challenge us. A couple of students (that had something to share) said they like what it says in Joshua 1:9:

“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”

For them, this verse is an encouragement to trust in God. It’s a reminder that God has given us a command, and we’re expected to follow. We have purpose. We have direction.

Life and struggles can often obscure the Truth of God, and sometimes we find ourselves in a season where we don’t know what God is saying. But be strong and courageous! God has gone ahead and is inviting you along with Him.

What command has God given you that you need this reminder to be strong and courageous?
