Open Arms is a Christian child development center offering programs for infants through pre-K, full day kindergarten and after school care for k-5th.
Open Arms Christian Child Development Center is a not-for-profit ministry of Our Savior's Way Lutheran Church, providing a preschool program of the highest quality designed to meet the needs of families in our community. At Open Arms, each child is guided to develop to his/her potential in every aspect of life within the sheltering and nurturing relationships of Christian love. We operate our center assuming that each child is an individual and must be allowed to grow and learn at his/her own rate and to develop a healthy self-image. At Open Arms we will help each child to grow spiritually, emotionally, physically, socially, and intellectually. A preschool and/or childcare experience frequently represents the child's first separation from home. It is a first experience in learning that other adults can be helpful and loving. Children have much social learning to do. This is accomplished best in an atmosphere of love and concern for the needs of each child. Programs are planned to encourage and develop individual strengths and abilities, while helping your child to understand the value of cooperation and interaction with others. This is achieved through working, learning, playing, and sharing with other children as well as adults.
Mission: Our mission is to provide a nurturing and safe environment for the development of children and families, in the community, through a loving, Christ-centered, Bible-based child care and preschool.
Did you know that OA has a full day PreK summer camp? On Tuesday, the PreK Fun in the Sun summer camp went on a field trip to Roer's Zoofari in Vienna. The Jelly Fish and Sea Turtles had a fantastic time interacting with and feeding all of the animals, as well as having a picnic lunch at the Zoo. Check out a few of the fantastic pictures from their adventure! #openarmsccdc

We finished up our promotion and graduation ceremonies last night with a performance from our Owls kindergarten class. This was our last kindergarten class because of the county going to full-day kindergarten, and they went out with a blast! We wish our Owls teacher, Ms. Carrianne, many blessings as she moves on to her new position in the county, and we wish our kindergarten graduates the best as they move on to first grade!
We would also like to thank Ms. Jee and Ms. Lolita for their hard work in preparing the students for their programs. They all did a super job!!
Congratulations to our amazing and talented students. We hope you all have a wonderful summer!

On Friday, the Owls Kindergarten class added some new flowers to their butterfly garden area outside our main entrance. Many of our class butterflies have come out of their chrysalis and are now ready to be released. Some of our butterflies enjoyed the beautiful garden before they stretched their wings and flew away! #openarmsccdc #butterflygarden @ Open Arms Christian Child Development Center

Today our “Out of this World” teachers enjoyed some Galactic Goodies from our solar system. And, yes, we counted Pluto as a planet! 😆
We also heard from a lot of our teachers, and they were so overwhelmed and touched by the generous gifts and notes they received this week. Thank you for your participation this week and for letting our teachers know that they are the best in the universe!
Open Arms teachers are “Out of this World,” and now they have the t-shirt to prove it! And, thank you to our parents and students for the yummy treats and snacks you brought in today for our teachers. They definitely feel the love and appreciation!! #teacherappreciationweek
This week we are celebrating the fact that our teachers are out of this world, but today we realized that our parents are also out of this world! Thank you so much to our parents who volunteered to bring in food for our “Out of this World Pasta Bar.” The teachers were so happy to sit down together and eat lunch, and they thought everything was delicious! Just as we appreciate our teachers, we appreciate our parents as well!
Today our teachers were treated to a Supersonic Snack Bar, and they received lots of books and school supplies from their students. Tomorrow, families are encouraged to bring in a card with a special message for our teachers. Let them know how much they mean to you!
Thank you for your contributions and participation this week! 🚀
We are kicking off Teacher Appreciation Week with a breakfast for our staff and a bunch of cute rocket cards on posters! It is fun to read why our children think their teacher is “out of this world!” We know that we have the most awesome teachers in the world, and it’s good to know that our kids think so too!
**If you did not get a chance to put your rocket card on your teachers poster yet, the posters will be up all week so there is plenty of time!**
This week is *Teacher Appreciation Week* and we are so excited show our teachers how much we love them! Check out the suggested ideas of things to do each day and participate if you wish.
On Monday, you will find signs outside the classroom doors with teachers’ names on them. Use the glue sticks under the signs to attach your “rocket cards” to the posters (see pictures). There are extra rocket cards under the signs and at the reception desks. The teachers will love reading about how they are “out of this world!”
Open Arms had a special treat today as retired astronaut and director of the U.S. Geological Survey, James Reilly, came to talk to some of our classes about his experience in space.
He told the children all about the preparation, boarding, take off, space-living, and rocket landing procedures that he experienced on his three space shuttle missions. The kids learn how he worked, ate, slept, and lived in space, and they asked him questions about how fast the rocket went (VERY fast) and why they used a parachute to land on the runway (to help the rocket slow down since they did not use brakes).
After his presentation, the Giraffes class (with his son Jacob) went outside to launch their own rockets. They jumped on empty soda bottles to push air through tubes that sent their paper rockets flying through the air. They had a blast! 🚀
Last week, our curriculum theme here at Open Arms was “caterpillars and butterflies.” Check out the beautiful artwork and fun activities our children did to learn more about these interesting insects. And, when you drop your kids off, be sure to check out the caterpillars in the classrooms. They have grown so big and they will be forming their cocoons soon to transfer into butterflies!
Look what just came in the mail! We are beginning our curriculum theme on caterpillars and butterflies, and our classes will receive a cup of caterpillars that will turn into cocoons and eventually emerge as butterflies. It is always a fun activity during the spring here at Open Arms! 🐛🦋 #openarmsccdc #metamorphosis
Before you know it, the end of the school year will be here and we will celebrate with our graduation and promotion ceremonies! We have made a few time changes to our events, so please check out the schedule for your child's day and time.
Happy Easter from all of us at Open Arms! #openarmsccdc
