Age Changes for Youth Progression and Ordination Announced

https://www.mormonnewsroom.org/article/age-changes-youth-progression-ordination-announced

mormonnewsroom.org The First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints announced a change Friday designed to strengthen children and youth through increased faith in Jesus Christ, deeper understanding of His gospel, and greater unity with His Church and its members.

Jeffrey R Holland

I was a student at BYU just finishing my first year of graduate work when our first child, a son, was born. We were very poor, though not so poor as Joseph and Mary. Nevertheless, when I realized that our own night of nights was coming, I believe I would have done any honorable thing in this world, and mortgaged any future I had, to make sure my wife had the clean sheets, the sterile utensils, the attentive nurses, and the skilled doctors who brought forth our firstborn son.

I compare those feelings (which I have had with each succeeding child) with what Joseph must have felt as he moved through the streets of a city not his own, with not a friend or kinsman in sight, nor anyone willing to extend a helping hand. In these very last and most painful hours of her “confinement,” Mary had ridden or walked approximately 100 miles from Nazareth in Galilee to Bethlehem in Judea. Surely Joseph must have wept at her silent courage.

I wonder what emotions Joseph might have had as he cleared away the dung and debris. I wonder if he felt the sting of tears as he hurriedly tried to find the cleanest straw and hold the animals back. I wonder if he wondered: “Could there be a more unhealthy, a more disease-ridden, a more despicable circumstance in which a child could be born? Should the mother of the Son of God be asked to enter the valley of the shadow of death in such a foul and unfamiliar place as this? Is it right He should be born here?” But I am certain Joseph did not mutter and Mary did not wail. They knew a great deal and did the best they could.

I’ve thought of Mary, too, this most favored mortal woman in the history of the world, who as a mere child received an angel who uttered to her those words that would change the course not only of her own life but also that of all human history: “Hail, thou virgin, who art highly favoured of the Lord. The Lord is with thee; for thou art chosen and blessed among women.”

It is here I stumble, here that I grasp for the feelings a mother has when she knows she has conceived a living soul, feels life quicken and grow within her womb, and carries a child to delivery. At such times fathers stand aside and watch, but mothers feel and never forget.

With only Joseph’s inexperienced assistance, she herself brought forth her firstborn son, wrapped him in the little clothes she had knowingly brought on her journey, and perhaps laid him on a pillow of hay. Shepherds would soon arrive and later, wise men from the East. Later yet the memory of that night would bring Santa Claus and Frosty and Rudolph—and all would be welcome. But first and forever there was just a little family, without toys or trees or tinsel. With a baby—that’s how Christmas began.

On behalf of FamilySearch and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Elder D Todd Christofferson shared "One of our key beliefs is that our families can be linked forever in this life and in the life hereafter and that knowing the sacrifices, the joys and the paths our ancestors trod helps us to know who we are and what we can accomplish. It is a priceless gift.”

Washington DC Visitor's Center Festival of Lights 2016

This week, Lesa and I were honored to meet with many religious and political leaders at the “Festival of Lights” Washington D.C. Temple lighting ceremony. I asked those who attended to reflect on their childhood memories of Christmas or other important holidays they celebrated as a child.

I have many memories of Christmas as a child and a teenager. I do remember many of the gifts that I received at Christmastime. I remember a football and a basketball. I find it is interesting that most of the gifts that I received over many Christmas celebrations are now gone and forgotten. I am surprised, however, when I think of my youth and childhood of what I remember most. My best memories are not what I received—but what I gave. Let me explain.

Each year, the Saturday before Christmas, the youth of our local congregation gathered to make Christmas baskets for the widows who lived in the nearby neighborhoods. We went to each of their homes and sang to them and gave them our Christmas basket gift. I still remember their grateful smiles. I will never forget the warm feeling this activity embedded in my heart.

May we etch the true spirit of Christmas in our hearts by serving as the Savior served and giving as the Savior gave. It is what we give—not what we receive—that we will remember most.

Past Day to Serve projects becomes larger county wide events.

For the past 5 years, the Ashburn Stake has been the lead coordinator of two Stake Day to Serve Events:

Love Your Neighbor, Feed Your Neighbor Multi-faith Food Drive
and
Loudoun County Hunger Summit (partners: Board of Supervisors and Loudoun Chamber) organized to explore ways to identify resources, combine efforts and discover ways to encourage self-reliance.

This year, both events have been safely moved to strong community organizations. The LYNFYN food drive is rotating leadership amongst the faith community and continues to grow.

The Hunger Summit saw a presence in this week's "Loudoun Now" newspaper, titled: Hunger Summit: Together at the Table by Margaret Morton, It states, "the summit is a partnership between the Community Foundation of Loudoun/Fauquier Counties and Loudoun Hunger; and has its roots in the work of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints."

It's exciting to see these projects take root. Day to Serve is a unique annual initiative that transcends politics and religious differences. It unites people of all faiths, races, cultures, and backgrounds with the shared goal of helping those in need and improving the communities where we live.

Thank you for all you do, each and every day. We know the service you do takes root as well.
