Rally to Repair Historic Ashburn Colored School Racist Vandalism Set for Oct. 9

You may have seen the local news crawl and local papers which shared recent racist vandalism to the historic Ashburn Colored School here in Loudoun County, Virginia.

This Historic Ashburn School operated from 1892 until the late 1950s and was undergoing a rehabilitation project. Friday night, October 1st - vandals defamed it with spray paint etc.

On Sunday, October 9th from 9 a.m - 2 p.m., the community is
encouraged to help with the on-site NAACP work day to remove the swastikas and slurs graffitied on to the Old School. Loudoun's Republican and Democratic parties issued a joint statement condemning the racist vandalism to the historic Ashburn Colored School.

More community service opportunities. One that other ward organizations have participated in is picking up food from the Leesburg warehouse then packing them at a YM/YW, Activity day or Scout meeting. After they are done packing, the organization will return the packed food to the warehouse for distribution to the schools.

Several Wards in the Stake are participating in a combined Day to Serve project to help WV flood victims, still displaced, from the June 2016 flood. Here is a letter from the Stake Presidency.

Mid-Atlantic Mormons

"The LDS Church encourages its members to be active in the political process, but as an institution maintains a stance of political neutrality.

"In his prayer, Johnson asked for a blessing on the leaders of the nation that 'they may have wisdom and humility as they serve. ... And Father, we pray for healing. Healing for our society. Healing for the family. Even that healing that comes through the atonement of Jesus Christ. We pray that he who is the great physician may mend our division and contention and bring us peace in our world, in our communities and in our homes,' he prayed."

The text of his prayer can be found at:

Pioneering members of Washington D.C. stake honored

"As the first stake in the mid-Atlantic region, the Washington DC Stake became the tree from which 24 other stakes have branched. President Ezra Taft Benson was called as the first stake president. At the time, the stake ranged from Fairview, Pennsylvania, to Richmond, Virginia, and from Maryland’s Chesapeake to Virginia’s Blue Ridge. Over 93,000 Church members now live within these stakes." At a devotional celebrating the 75th anniversary of the Washington DC Stake, President Russell M. Nelson of the Quorum of the Twelve joined with others on Nov. 20 to honor pioneering Latter-day Saint
