Our Lady, Queen of Peace, come to the aid of all those in harm's way in Afghanistan, as well as all those who bear the memory of striving to engender peace in Afghanistan. 🙏

Pray with us:
"Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help, or sought thine intercession was left unaided. Inspired by this confidence, I fly unto thee, O Virgin of virgins, my mother. To thee do I come, before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in thy mercy, hear and answer me. Amen."

Happy Feast Day of St. Kateri Tekakwitha! St. Kateri, often called the Lily of the Mohawks, was the first Native American saint. She shows us the power and inspiring faith of converts despite the many hardships she endured in her life. At age four, she lost both her parents and brother to the smallpox epidemic, which left her scarred and partially blind. Moved and inspired by Jesuit missionaries, she was baptized at age nineteen on Easter Sunday. Her strong faith created opposition with her people, so she eventually left in search for a Christian native community. She spent the rest of her days continuing to show courage and zeal in her faith through fasting and prayer.

“Saint Kateri, Protectress of Canada and the first native American saint, we entrust to you the renewal of the faith in the first nations and in all of North America! May God bless the first nations!” -Pope Benedict XVI on the canonization of St. Kateri Tekakwitha (October 21, 2012)

The story of St. Maria Goretti is not only a story of purity and chastity in the face of evil, but also one of redemption and salvation. Praise God from whom all blessings flow!

🖋 OPEN LETTER TO THE WORLD 🖋
From the man who killed St Maria Goretti

Did you know that the man who killed St Maria Goretti, Alessandro Serenelli was present at her Canonisation after converting?

Alessandro wrote this letter shortly before his death - what a beautiful witness of the transformative power of Christ and His mercy!

No one is ever too far away from Christ to come back 😇

A great saint for the Church in Uganda and for our times!

Have you ever seen or heard something that left you questioning people’s goodness? St. Charles Lwanga was no stranger to this concept. As the chief page in the king’s court, every day he witnessed the exploitation and abuse of younger pages at the palace. After the king had another key official killed for speaking out against his actions, Charles took it upon himself to protect the most vulnerable in the king’s court and taught these young men about the faith he received from the missionaries in the region. When the time came for Charles and his companions to witness to their faith, they courageously remained resolute and died witnessing to the truth.

How can you be a witness to your faith, even when the world tells you it is not the right thing to do? St. Charles Lwanga and Companions, pray for us!

Pope Francis adds feast of Martha, Mary, and Lazarus to Church calendar

Pope Francis adds feast of Martha, Mary, and Lazarus to Church calendar Pope Francis on Tuesday added the memorial of Sts. Mary, Martha, and Lazarus to the General Roman Calendar, giving the siblings the combined feast day of July 29.

02/10/2021

Lent begins next week! Consider this reflection from Bishop Burbidge as you prepare.

https://www.catholicherald.com/Faith/A_Lent_in_imitation_of_St__Joseph,_Protector_of_Christ/

“Each Lent we devote ourselves to prayer, fasting and almsgiving in order to prepare for the renewal of our baptismal promises at Easter and to reflect upon times when we fell short of our obligation to live in virtue. This Lenten season provides the unique opportunity to do so, as Pope Francis proclaimed 2021 to be the Year of St. Joseph, the protector of Jesus. In this year, the church has called us to imitate St. Joseph’s virtues and zeal, and thus we receive abundant graces and encourage one another by our words and deeds.”

Blessed Sacrament was established as a mission of St. Mary Parish in Alexandria in 1944 to offer a spiritual home to the burgeoning number of Catholics who moved into the Washington, D.C., metro region for federal and military jobs during World War II. Mass was celebrated at an elementary school and movie theater before the first church building was erected in 1946, the year Blessed Sacrament was established as a parish. Father Martin T. Quinn was founding pastor.
