During Lent 2022 we will mark the second anniversary of the beginning of the COVID-19 Pandemic. This two-hour planning gathering will include time to reflect on the meaning of Lent and how the pandemic will impact this year's planning. We will offer an overview of helpful resources, time to brainstorm in breakout groups, and a Lent 2022 Planning Worksheet. The follow up email will include a list of all the resources shared. Whether you bring yourself or a whole team, we hope this space will inspire intentional, creative planning for Lent 2022 in your context.

The Rev. Mark Jefferson, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Homiletics at Virginia Theological Seminary will provide a reflection on the season of Lent for us. Sarah Bentley Allred (VTS '19), Editor of Building Faith, will facilitate the rest of the workshop.

It’s been another hard year. AND God is still at work.

Above all, trust in the slow work of God.
We are quite naturally impatient in everything to reach the end without delay.
We should like to skip the intermediate stages.
We are impatient of being on the way to something unknown, something new.

And yet it is the law of all progress
that it is made by passing through some stages of instability—
and that it may take a very long time.

And so I think it is with you;
your ideas mature gradually—let them grow,
let them shape themselves, without undue haste.
Don’t try to force them on,
as though you could be today what time
(that is to say, grace and circumstances acting on your own good will)
will make of you tomorrow.

Only God could say what this new spirit
gradually forming within you will be.
Give Our Lord the benefit of believing
that his hand is leading you,
and accept the anxiety of feeling yourself
in suspense and incomplete.

Making Luminarias: A Fun and Easy Christmas Tradition

The week before Christmas we would gather in the basement of the church and assemble the luminaria. Creating an assembly line, one of us would open white lunch-size paper bags, placing them on large trays. Another person would use a paper cup to dump about two inches of sand in the bag, followed by another person placing a white votive candle (one that would burn for eight hours) in the sand.
