Great discussion with HUD Secretary Ben Carson this morning about how partnerships among churches, nonprofit developers and local governments can create much-needed affordable housing. Proud to tour St. James Plaza in AlexandriaVA as a wonderful example of a faith-based partnership that also includes on-site preschool partner The Campagna Center and nearby neighbor Saint James United Methodist Church-Alexandria, whose land made the affordable apartment community possible. Grateful to participate in conversation with other local leaders, including Wesley Housing, Episcopal Church of the Resurrection, Alexandria VA, Fairlington Presbyterian AlexandriaVA.gov Office of Housing and Hud Mid-Atlantic.
Today's #rethinkchurch word of the day is #Celebrate. Today we celebrate these churches from the Alexandria District for their Increases in Professions of Faith, Average Worship Attendance, or both!

Thank you, Pastor James, for your support at City Council today. It's an honor to be your colleague and neighbor.
I have certainly found this to be true....

Saint James is a community of folks figuring out what it means to be Jesus-followers in this world. We offer both a parking lot and on street parking.

We are a faith community on Alexandria's West End. We sold one building and have found a new-to-us space just about 500 feet from where we were before. We bought what was All Nations Church of God as they were moving as well. We have renovated the building to make it more "us." Being people in this world is challenging; we try to those challenges seriously as we struggle to see where faith fits in.

Faith without Agenda

Jesus goes to eat at the home a religious leader. While he is eating there, a woman comes in to wash his feet and anoint him. The religious leader is bothered by it and Jesus sees the gracious gift in it. What are we to make of this story and how will it teach us to be us better?

A Resilient Faith: Like Simon

Sometimes I find myself wondering how to bounce back from living like I had no faith. Simon is well-acquainted with denying his faith. Still, he bounces back. How can each of us learn from the master “deny-er” about how we can recover a sense of faith? Join us Sunday at 11AM Eastern (don’t forget it is time to change your clocks Saturday night!).

A Portable Faith:Like a Mustard Seed

Remember when cellphones came in bags that were difficult to consider truly “portable?” Now, cellphones fit in a pocket easily. Jesus speaks about faith the size of a mustard seed (Matthew 13:31-32). What is Jesus getting at? I think at least part of it is that our faith is meant to be portable. Join us on Sunday at 11AM Eastern in-person or online.

Table as Abundance: Evening Stream

Jesus did not hold back when it came to giving. Even before he willingly gave his life away on the cross, he gave his life away in healing and feeding and meeting people. There were times when it was when Jesus fed people from what seemed like little and the meal he leftovers, lots of leftovers. Jesus wanted us to see that God is a God of abundance. This Sunday we will approach a different nuance to the table than the extravagance of several weeks ago; with God there is more than enough. Join us in-person or online at 11AM Eastern.

Table as Service

Good morning. On Sunday our live stream on Facebook seemed to have an issue. We apologize for that and hope you were able to join on our website. If not here is Sunday’s worship, “Table as Service” available on our #Youtube channel and website.

Jesus models what it means to be a person at the table; he serves others. Sometime we do not appreciate those who serves us at table. Yet Jesus does not look askance at the opportunity to do what we might see as lowly work. Jesus shows us a way to be people of the table that includes others and serves others.

#Thursday Evening Worship and Prayer

#Thursday Evening Worship and Prayer
Reflecting this evening on the importance of setting aside space and time to be in #communion and "at the table" with #God. Even when it seems like we have too much to do, or if worship and #sabbath seem like a waste of time or inefficient.

Let our prayer be to discover new ways or reactivate old ways we can be present "at the table" with God, no matter the happenings all around us.

Table as Acceptance

This week we move into the New Testament with a story Jesus told about the table. Though the table may have become less central in our busy lives, it was the place for gathering in the times when the Bible stories were being lived. In many households, days began and ended at the table as they did when I was growing up. Jesus invites all of us to the table and like all invitations, we have to determine for ourselves if we are able to make it. Jesus' story about table will be our place to begin on Sunday. Join us at 11AM Eastern in-person or online.

Table as Welcome

I am excited to begin our #Table series this Sunday. Saint James offers communion weekly, gathered around the table. Most folks spend time at the table eating and Jesus spent a lot of time eating with and feeding others. The Table is a central part of our lives and it is a place we find meaning and share stories.
