[07/30/14]   A New Farmers Market Coming to Boyce (521 Pacific Ave.)

ALEXANDRIA, Louisiana, July 30, 2014 – At 10 a.m. on Aug. 5, join USDA Rural Development State Director Clarence W. Hawkins, Mayor of Boyce Jack DeWitt, Rapides Station Community Ministries Director Reverend Joe S. Green, and other community officials as we celebrate National Farmer’s Market Week with a ground breaking for a new Farmer’s Market to be constructed in Boyce, Louisiana.

Thomas J. Vilsack, Secretary of the U. S. Department of Agriculture proclaimed the week of August 3-9, 2014 as National Farmers Market Week. This year marks the 15th Annual National Farmers Market Week recognizing the important role that farmers markets play in the agricultural and food economy. The U.S. Department of Agriculture began declaring National Farmers Market Week in 2000.

USDA Rural Development provided a Rural Business Enterprise Grant to construct the new market in Boyce that is currently designated a food desert. The RBEG program provides grants for rural projects that finance and facilitate development of small and emerging rural businesses. The market will create economic development in an underserved community, create jobs, and provide a venue for local farmers to sell their produce.
