[07/08/21]   Presiding Bishop Michael Curry offers pastoral word to the people and Diocese of Haiti
at this time of hardship and difficulty

[July 7, 2021] My brothers and sisters, I greet you in the ancient apostolic words: “Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.” As followers of Jesus, we stand fast and believe firmly in the power of prayer to help and to heal—to console and to strengthen—in this time of uncertainty.

As it says in the Epistle of James, “The prayers of the righteous are powerful and effective.” My brothers and sisters, we are praying for you. We are mindful of those simply trying to live their lives in peace and wholeness and to raise their children in safety. We are mindful of the needs of all the people in Haiti. My brothers and sisters, we are praying for you.

To all the people of The Episcopal Church, I beseech you, by the mercies of God, to continue to lift up the Haitian people in your prayers, both now and in the days to come.

I leave you with the words of the Psalmist:

“God is our refuge and strength,
a very present help in trouble.
Therefore we will not fear, though the earth be moved,
and though the mountains be toppled into the depths of the sea;
Though its waters rage and foam,
and though the mountains tremble at its tumult.”

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.

Keep the faith,

The Most Rev. Michael Bruce Curry
Presiding Bishop and Primate
The Episcopal Church

Greetings from Haiti!

The Outreach Team received the following message from the Rev. Yves Semé, Rector of Ste. Croix - our partner parish in Léogâne, Haiti.
Hello my brothers and sisters, I greet you in the name of the Creator God.
This [letter] is in order to hear from you and inform you of the functioning of the Sainte-Croix school. The school is functioning normally and the lunch program is working very well. For the music program this is also working normally with classroom lessons and there is also a group of students participating in choir and orchestra.
I would love to hear from you, it will be a relief for us at Ste Croix. It must be said that the parents of the students who have benefited from your scholarships have sent a very special greeting and thanks to you.
I apologize again for this great silence, because my cell phone was lost. I lost all my phone contacts.
May God continue to bless you. We continued to pray for the group and your congregation. Thanks

The Rev. Yves Semé
Rector of Ste Croix Parish

June 3, 2021 , A Message from Bishop Goff
Dear Friends,
“Violence will no more be heard in your land, Ruin or destruction within your borders.”
- Isaiah 60:18

Thank you for your reply to my letter of last week regarding a gathering of clergy and laity in our Diocese to talk abut a faithful response to mass shootings and gun violence in America. About 50 of you wrote. Some of you shared a note about your approach to these issues. Others suggested resources that you have found helpful. A few others flagged concerns about how politicized these issues have become. I hope that people from across the political spectrum will be a part of our next step. Our focus, after all, is not gun ownership and appropriate use of fi****ms, but acts of violence perpetrated by people wielding deadly weapons in our workplaces, supermarkets, schools and other locations of our daily lives.

In the hope proclaimed by the prophet Isaiah, I invite us to gather for an initial conversation next Thursday, June 10, at 4 p.m. We will pray together, meet one another, name the issues for us in the Diocese of Virginia, and begin to discern where the Spirit is leading us next. The gathering will be one hour in length.

The ZOOM link to the meeting is here:

Meeting ID: 880 5291 4727 Passcode: 497873
Please click in as you are able.

As we prepare for this time together, let us continue to pray.
O God, you have bound us together in a common life. Help us in the midst of our struggles for peace and justice to talk with one another without suspicion or negative assumptions, and to work together in mutual respect for our common goal of ending gun violence; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Faithfully yours,
