Anti-Racism Dialogue Sessions to be Offered This Fall

Since late 2020, almost 40 members of the MVUC community have participated in a series of enlightening and motivating Anti-Racism Dialogue Sessions facilitated by Sue Ries Lamb. The Anti-Racism Committee is delighted to announce that the course will be offered again this Fall. The format will be similar to the previous two sessions. There will be a series of six Zoom sessions on Thursday evenings from 7:00-9:00. Each session will include whole group discussions and facilitated small group conversations. The sessions will be held on the first and third Thursday of the month starting on October 7th. Subsequent sessions will be held on October 21, November 4, November 18, December 2, and December 16.
The sessions will be interactive and will require one to two hours of homework for each session. Ideally, you should sign up only if you will be able to attend all six sessions, although exceptions could be made. In order for all participants to have their voices heard, the course will be limited to 16 people - MVUC members and friends will have priority. The course will be appropriate for mid-teens and up. If you are interested in signing up for the sessions, or if you have any questions, please send an e-mail to the Anti-Racism Committee ([email protected]) and put “Dialogue Sessions” in the subject line. Thank you.

These are safe, strong communities of primarily Hispanic residents. They are home owners, but not land owners. The County is set to continue centuries of displacement of people of color for the sake of profits with this rezoning move.

Visit the community in this video and hear from them yourself.

A reminder that tonight Diverse Revolutionary Unitarian Universalist Multicultural Ministries will be hosting a worshipful-experience that you will not want to miss.

RSVP via the link in the main post below.

In less than 3 years, DRUUMM member has risen from 86 to 371 members. And I'm celebrating the 400th member of this FB The Gathering Place. I believe we need organizations like DRUUMM more than ever, to keep us connected through hard times, and to collectivize our imagination for the world we need to thrive.

I'm reaching out to ask you to join us for our virtual worship, open to all on Wednesday, May 19th at 8:30 PM Eastern. Rev. Mitra Rahnema will be preaching on Becoming Human, Again and Again, with musical artists Joshua Long and Nicole Rumeau. Also participating are Rev. Manish Mishra-Marzetti, Rhonda Brown, Ayanna Kafi, Esperanza Garza-Danweber, and more.
We would love to have your support, and invitation particularly to UUs in multiracial families and engaged in racial justice. Folks can RSVP to join the virtual congregation at bit.ly/may19druumm or livestream on FB.
We are also inviting UU congregations and community orgs to be a co-sponsor to support expanding our pastoral care work with BIPOC UU. We would love your help in making an "ask" of your church for support. This often looks like contacting your board and staff. More details are here in a PDF Co-Sponsor letter that you can share: https://drive.google.com/.../1LN3d5JXEeo5MJE0qF9G.../view...
With gratitude, Rev. Joseph

Build Back Dream Forward

It's the stories behind the headlines that will transform our hearts; the stories of those already oppressed and at risk. This video offers the stories of people of color and low income neighbors in Alexandria and southern Fairfax County, Virginia. I'm proud to have been a part of this project. Please share.

On this day in history!

May 15, 1961 is the date of the consolidation of AUA (American Unitarian Association) and UCA (Universalist Church of America) to form the UUA. So today is our 60th birthday!

Help us celebrate this special day by supporting one of these critically important funds:

Build Back Dream Forward Teaser

Over the last six months, community members from Alexandria City and Fairfax County have joined together to produce a film project intended to be used as a conversation starter for your organizations and communities. This video highlights the effects of COVID-19 on communities of color and low-income communities. You will hear from members of our communities directly as they bear witness to their lived experiences during this pandemic and share their hopes for the future.

Rising Hope Mission Church and Ventures In Community invite you to attend a co-sponsored unveiling of the "Build Back Dream Forward" film (16 minutes) on Sunday, May 16th at 7:30 pm via Zoom. During this meeting we will watch the film together, share insights on where individuals can go to be a part of the solution through advocacy and volunteering, and lastly release the video into your hands to help your organizations and communities further the conversation and response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

We will be subsequently announcing and posting how to access this video for use in your church or organization.
We hope that you will plan to join us!

Eid Mubarak from Mount Vernon Unitarian Chuch (MVUC) and Rev. Susan Fredrick-Gray, President of the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA).

Wishing all who celebrate breaking the fast of the holy month of Ramadan, Eid Mubarak. May this time of feasting, generosity, and community be a source of spiritual renewal and resilience.

In this time traditionally marked by celebration, I am acutely aware of the devastating losses, injustices and violence impacting the lives and communities of so many Muslims around the world – in Jerusalem and Gaza, in India, in China, in Myanmar, and in many of our own communities wherever we are. With intention, may we recommit ourselves to the work of peace that grows from the presence of justice. May we deepen the work that is happening all across the world to build bridges of human care and connection.

May we come to know deeply that our future depends on cultivating compassion and interdependence, so that all people may thrive and flourish.

General information

We at Mount Vernon Unitarian Church strive to be an inclusive congregation. We welcome all who seek the truth with an open mind and an affectionate heart. We are non-creedal in theology; there is no test of belief as a prerequisite for membership. We are congregational in polity; the congregation governs itself in all matters, spiritual and material. Believing in the ongoing revelation of truth, we have a religious education program for children and adults. Our children's program, like that for adults, is designed to teach respect for the sacred, respect for one another, and living one's faith every day. An age-appropriate curriculum provides exposure to the great questions of religion and faith. Our goal is to help all our students, young and old, become religiously sensitive and intellectually alert, and to ground their faith in both reason and love.
