After a weekend celebrating “Halloween” or “All Hallows’ Eve” with costumed children (and adults), candy giveaways and haunted houses, we turn now to the “reason for the season. On November 1st and 2nd, Catholics observe the companion feasts of All Saints and All Souls. Both commemorations remind us that salvation in Jesus Christ offers us eternal life. We are surrounded by the company of heaven – angels and saints – at each celebration of the Eucharist. On All Saints Day, we remember that heaven is filled not only with the saints we can identify by name, but also with countless others who were faithful disciples of the Lord even though history does not record their names. On All Souls Day, we pray for those whose journey to the Father continues after death. We remember especially the souls in Purgatory – Heaven’s waiting room – who are being prepared to experience the amazing glory of Paradise.

In this last year and a half, many have lost loved ones – some to COVID-19, some to other causes. The grief of those left behind has often been prolonged because families could not gather, funerals had limited capacities or were restricted to graveside services only. To all of those who grieve, may All Saints Day and All Souls Day bring hope and comfort. May we hold all of the faithful departed in prayer these days, throughout the month of November, and indeed each and every day.

I had fun at Cabrini Fest 2021 this afternoon. Games, talented performers, food, a zip line (no, not me), and more. Stop by before it closes and say hello to Fr. Chad Partain, Fr. Rob Johnson, Sr. Nina Vincent and the great parishioners of St. Frances Cabrini Church in Alexandria.

In this month of the holy rosary, I had the pleasure of celebrating Mass this evening at Our Lady of the Rosary Church in the Black Lake community. My arrival came as a bit of a surprise to all, but Father Gus “Dutch” Voltz, Deacon Tommy Robichaux, and the parishioners welcomed me warmly.

It was my great pleasure this afternoon to celebrate the Mass of Institution of Acolytes at Notre Dame Seminary, New Orleans. Donnie Kuzma of our diocese is one of the new acolytes. He is standing to my left in the photo. Fr. Luke LaFleur and I enjoyed a great meal with the Alexandria seminarians at NDS after the liturgy. This was my first trip back to my alma mater as a Bishop and I was grateful for the warm welcome. Please pray for all of our seminarians and for more vocations to the priesthood and religious life.

“We’re so excited to be able to worship with our church family and to fulfil our spiritual needs via the Eucharist.” - Dennie and Patti Williams

COME TO THE TABLE: There’s nothing like meeting together as a church family. From fellowship in the lobby to worship in the sanctuary to going out for lunch afterwards to gathering together during the week for small groups, there’s something about the in-room experience that can never be truly and fully duplicated online.

As we celebrate today the life and legacy of Saint Vincent de Paul, may we look for ways to be more charitable to others in thought, word, and actions.

"We should strive to keep our hearts open to the sufferings and wretchedness of other people, and pray continually that God may grant us that spirit of compassion which is truly the spirit of God." - St. Vincent de Paul
